Tata Punch could get an Electric Version in the future

Earlier this week, Tata Motors unveiled its new sub-4m crossover called the Punch. At present, it is available with a 1.2-litre petrol engine, however, the company believes an all-electric version could be a possibility if there is demand.

The Punch is based on the Agile Light Flexible Advanced (ALFA) Architecture. It is the same platform that underpins the Altroz and is capable of handling electric powertrains.

The Punch could use Tata's Ziptron powertrain that debuted on the Nexon EV. It features a lithium-ion battery pack that powers a single electric motor. It has an output of 127 BHP and the battery offers a maximum range of 312 km (MIDC cycle).

The Tigor EV also uses the same technology. It comes with a 26 kWh battery pack that offers a range of 306 km. The electric motor has an output of 74 BHP and 170 Nm.

If this is to be believed, then the eKUV 1OO will be a big humiliation to the Mahindra's EV portfolio, where customers could get approx 150 kms more range for a couple of lakhs more with a more VFM car, tried & tested battery/motors and better looker.

Then, the punch will give a tough competition to the eXUV3OO which technically is planned to confront the Nexon EV.

Re: Tata Punch could get an Electric Version in the future

Despite the huge success of Nexon EV, Tata is unnecessarily slow in bringing new EVs. Tata sons chairman announced during Nexon EV unveil (Jan 2020) that they will release 4 EV models in the next 24 months. We are 20+ months since that announcement but have yet to see a single new model. Instead, they brought Tigor EV with minor improvements.

The Indian market's shift to EVs won't be gradual. It will be rapid as soon as models with Nexon EV range at a price of Rs 10 to 11 lakhs and Kona EV range at the prices of Nexon EV. It will happen in the 2 wheeler market in the next 2-3 years itself.

Tata missed a chance to unveil it along the fossil fuel variant. I guess either they haven't gotten the technology to adapt the ziptron to other vehicles or they are facing shortages in the battery dept.

Re: Tata Punch could get an Electric Version in the future

Every product launch of Tata used to be accompanied with a press release that a performance version was on the cards based on demand. With the exception of the Vista D90 and the Tiago jtp, they've all ended up being vaporware. I guess the ev version is the new version of that. Let's see if it materializes. Every company, when it launches a product will have some sort of roadmap planned. Today ev is the new hotness. I'm sure every manufacturer would launch an ev product if there was demand for it at the price they planned to sell it for. But I fall to see the point of making so much noise about it. Nobody is going to sit and wait for the punch ev. If they want the punch badly, they'll buy the ice version. If they want an ev badly, they'll buy another. I fall to see why Tata would announce and hype a product which would at best cannibalise their current sales. Most of the other manufacturers do not indulge in this

They are probably waiting for more EV charger roll outs before they commit more EV models, as, the enthusiasts are already buying the 3 (now 4) EVs already in the market. The mainstream buyer will only step into the EV world once there are atleast a dozen more chargers in every urban district before he plunges into the EV world, myself included.

While I am on the topic, I find the EV charging costs, sometimes reported as high as Rs. 16 per minute, outrageous. This also needs to be brought under control if there is any hope of early adoption on a large scale.

Re: Tata Punch could get an Electric Version in the future

Instead of making such useless announcements and wasting time with products nobody asked for (Tigor EV), Tata should simply fast track the Altroz EV. That’s the electric car people have been waiting for, and it should have been here already! Then, it’s only matter of time before the same is available on the Punch. Same underpinnings, after all. The technology has been out there for some time now, and has been beta tested by tens of thousands of Nexon EV owners. They shouldn’t be taking this much time in bringing the same to the new cars.

I think what TML needs to really focus on is getting it's EV production ecosystem in place. Prepare a line up of local vendors, indigenizing batteries, motors etc..

Right now the operations are miniscule and restricted. Also the cost of sourcing imported components is simply passed to the consumer.

TML should look to bring costs down enabling them to pack EVs with bigger batteries and reduce prices. I sincerely hope they are heading in that direction.

What's the point of another 11lac EV with a 27kw battery pack a la Punch electric?

Re: Tata Punch could get an Electric Version in the future

Shailesh Chandra, in this interview, talks about the future EV plans.

He says, a total of 10 evs are part of the plan.

Four from Gen 1 are already here. Two will come from Gen 3. So, four should come from Gen 2.

He says of the four from Gen 2, some will be current name plates, some will be new.

What I think they can be:

Gen 1 (Already here):
  • Xpess T
  • Tiago
  • Tigor
  • Nexon

Gen 2:
  • Curvv - Already showcased
  • Sierra - Already showcased
  • Maybe Punch EV
  • Maybe Altroz EV

Gen3:
  • Avinya - Already showcased
  • Maybe an SUV

What could be Tata SUV EV lineup:
Punch < Nexon < Sierra < Curvv < Gen 3 SUV

What, I really hope, is that the Punch EV goes the XUV 400 way and gets a 4.2-4.3 metre length. It can be less on power and range than its siblings, like what the Tiago is doing, but has ample space.

I dont see the Harrier finding a place in this lineup. I wonder why. Maybe the Gen 3 Born EVs will take that place in that price range.

Here is the interview (the bit about the platforms start at 5:25)

Re: Tata Punch could get an Electric Version in the future

Altroz EV is coming, for sure.

There is a probability of the Punch EV.

Curvv expected to be launched in two years.

Avinya by 2025. No change in timelines.

No comments on Tata Sierra EV. But he asks to keep our hopes up.
