Ford Performance has released teaser images of its new electric crate motor, called the Eluminator. The name 'Eluminator' is said to be inspired by the Aluminator title, used by Ford for its aluminium V8 crate engines. The Ford Eluminator electric crate motor is said to compete against the likes of Chevrolet's eCrate.

Re: Ford Eluminator electric crate motor teased; available for converting your petrol car to Electri

I love this "new" Ford! What a wonderful initiative. I, for one, sure am open to converting one of my existing cars to electric (the old Jeep) and will be even more inclined if the powertrain is coming from an OEM.

Ford's electric strategy so far is the best I've seen of all the traditional OEMs. The electric F150 & Mach-E have been spot on in terms of design, branding, price & performance. And now, this .

Well done, Ford. Big fan of this commitment to a game-changing technology in the car industry.

Man what an ugly and menacing looking contraption!. So sad that the aesthetically pleasing V12 and V8 crates are going to be replaced with this. Imagine a Lambo with such a contraption at its rear and for all to see through the transparent engine cover. "The horror ..the horror". Though I am a big EV advocate and probably in terms of performance this motor would do a good job, just cover it with a metal blanket.

Sounds very exciting (especially for old vehicle owners) and a step in the right direction. However, it is unfortunately not a simple task.

What you will also need (at a minimum)
Sufficient batteries
Correct placement of batteries, with specific focus on ventilation, cooling and vehicle balance
Battery management system to ensure even charging/discharging of cells (among other things)
Controller for auxiliary but important functionality. e.g. Power cuts off on applying brakes.

Nice to have:
Regenerative braking.

Re: Ford Eluminator electric crate motor | For converting your petrol car to Electric!

This is a great initiative by Ford. And it's 1000 times better than some local business people who have created conversion kit and discussed here (Convert a Maruti Dzire into an electric car in Rs. 5 lakh)

When a manufacturer himself provides these kinds of innovation products, it gives tremendous confidence for the owners to go for it. The trust comes from the fact that the manufacturers know their products and would have done adequate research to ensure the quality and reliability of both new attachment as well as old base product. I am 100% sure we have lot more similar innovative solutions in the pipeline from other manufacturers as well.

Overall, really happy to see development happening from all angles to promote EV cars. Only major hindrances today, are range of EVs and battery charging time. If these issues are cracked, then I am sure this will create a big transformation in Motor industry.

Now retailing at $3900 .
https://performanceparts.ford.com/part/M-9000-MACHE

This does not include the battery and control systems, I was initially enthused that this is the whole package.
Nonetheless an excellent idea, and probably a more eco friendly path on the transition to EV.

Let me write this from my memory. Please note that I am not flaming you, in fact I totally agree with you.

I have read somewhere (about the Boeing 707) that when the jet aircraft started test flights, many people were disappointed. There was this strong sentiment that the new jetliner was not as aesthetically pleasing or "romantic" as the leading airliners then: the Lockheed Super Constellation and the Douglas DC-6 / DC-7.

Many people lamented the lack of "churning" propellers and the "gentle" takeoffs and landings of the prop-driven aircraft. Some thought the 707 in contrast is a speed maniac, a rashly-driven muscle car. A lot of people believed jet power is good only for the USAF and a bit overkill for the civilian air travel. This included airplane enthusiasts, passengers, airline staff and even some pilots.

While change, as they is say is inevitable, at least some of the fears expressed in the late 1950s were proven correct. All modern jetliners look similar and they ferry people in pajamas from point A to point B.
