Mercedes-Benz outlines its Electric Car roadmap

Mercedes-Benz has announced that it will go all-electric by the end of the decade.

The company stated that by 2022, it will introduce battery electric vehicles (BEV) across all segments. Further to this, from 2025 onwards, all newly launched vehicles architectures will be electric-only and customers will have the option to choose an all-electric alternative to every model the company makes.

To help facilitate the shift to becoming an EV-only brand, Mercedes-Benz will be investing a total of € 40 billion between 2022 and 2030. This is expected to help the brand significantly accelerate its R&D and advance its EV portfolio plan.

In 2025, Mercedes-Benz plans to introduce three new electric-only architectures - MB.EA, AMG.EA and VAN.EA. The first platform will be used on all medium to large-sized passenger cars, while the AMG.EA will be a dedicated performance EV platform for its AMG customers. The VAN.EA will be developed specifically for electric vans and light commercial vehicles.

Mercedes-Benz also announced that the company plans to set up 8 Gigafactories for producing cells, together with its partners around the world. This is said to be in addition to the 9 manufacturing plants dedicated to building battery systems.

The German carmaker will also set up "Plug & Charge", which will allow customers to plug-in, charge and unplug their EVs, without hassle. The new Plug & Charge network will go live alongside the market launch of the EQS, which is slated for later this year.

Mercedes-Benz is also developing an all-new electric car - the Vision EQXX, which is claimed to offer a real-world range of over 1,000 km. Its world premiere is scheduled for 2022.

Just for reference, the Daimler Group reported about 150 'Billion' Euro revenue in 2019-20 year.

Re: Mercedes-Benz outlines its Electric Car roadmap

It's incredibly hard to build an ICE car within euro 7 emission standards, we will be seeing similar statements from all major European manufacturers. I guess 2030 will be the last for ICE cars in Europe.

Re: Mercedes-Benz outlines its Electric Car roadmap

'Gigafactory' - the constant use of this word just goes to show how much of a benchmark Tesla is and its CEO is in terms of all things EV.

If I was MB, I would have not used that term in the press release - even if its commonly understood to mean something. On the other hand, for me and checked with a few friends yesterday, Gigafactory alludes to the factories Musk is setting up everywhere.

Mercedes-Benz is spending more than previously planned on combustion engines.

Quote:
the company expected only 50% of sales to be electrified vehicles, including hybrids, by the end of the decade.

Difficult times for German automakers. BMW still betting on stupid technology like fuel cell with launch in 2028, bleeding the money, meanwhile asking employees to cut salaries.

Q3 profits for BMW fell by 84%.
Quote:
BMW said Wednesday it faced "extraordinary challenges" as its quarterly profits plunged due to slumping Chinese sales and a vehicle recall, the latest sign of the crisis gripping Europe's auto sector.

Q3 profits for Audi fell by 91%.

The operating profit of German carmaker Volkswagen's subsidiary Audi plummeted by 91% in the third quarter compared to the same period of the previous year, reaching only €106 million ($116 million).

Re: Mercedes-Benz outlines its Electric Car roadmap

Customers pull the plug on Mercedes EV sales, EQS plummets 52%

Quote:
Mercedes had a mixed year in the United States, but sales climbed 9% in 2024.
Crossovers led the way and G-Class sales exceeded 10,000 units for the first time ever.
EV sales plummeted with the EQB, EQE, and EQS lineups all posting significant declines.
They paint an interesting picture that shows a preference for gas-powered performance instead of eco-friendly EVs.

Starting with the latter, Mercedes-AMG posted a record fourth quarter with sales of 16,169 units. The G-Class also had its best year ever as customers snapped up 10,987 SUVs.

While that’s good news, Mercedes bet big on electric vehicles, and this appears to be a bust. EQB sales were down 36% for the year, while the EQE lineup fell 39%. The range-topping EQS lineup was even harder hit as sales plummeted 52% to a disappointing 6,963 units. Even the eSprinter is struggling as the company only found 828 buyers.

Overall, Mercedes-Benz USA finished the year on a positive note as passenger vehicle sales were up 9% to 324,528 units. That trailed BMW (371,346) and Lexus (345,669), but the brand beat Audi (196,576), Cadillac (160,204), Acura (132,367), Volvo (125,243), Lincoln (104,823), and Infiniti (58,070).

Re: Mercedes-Benz outlines its Electric Car roadmap

Mercedes will abandon its separate EV lineup.

Future electric cars will carry the names of the gas models plus an EQ suffix.

Quote:
Mercedes is rethinking its electric car strategy amid declining sales. We've learned that future models will look more like gas cars by dropping the super-slippery styling of the EQS and co. Another significant change is in the works. The German luxury brand intends to bring ICEs and EVs even closer by dropping the separate "EQ" lineup used today for zero-emission models. The two letters are staying, but they'll have a less prominent role.

According to a Mercedes spokesperson, the three-pointed star "will no longer use 'EQ' in model nomenclature for new vehicles." It means there won't be any new purely electric models that start with "EQ." Instead, future vehicles will carry the name of the internal combustion engine versions, plus "EQ Technology" at the end. This strategy is already in place, having been used on the G580 with EQ Technology last year.
Quote:
The next model in line to get the "EQ Technology" branding will be the new CLA, which will break cover next month. The third generation of the luxury sedan will also be sold as a plug-in hybrid with the "EQ Hybrid Technology" terminology. The versions powered by gas and diesel engines will simply be called "CLA." Even the cheaper ones will have some form of electrification baked in, considering Mercedes has developed a new mild-hybrid setup.
