EV makers need to stop these marketing gimmicks. 800V charging is completely irrelevant to us. India barely has any fast DC chargers, leave alone super fast ones!

What’s relevant to the customer is the basic AC charger that the car comes with, figure of these are seldom shared openly

We seem to live in two different Indias…

Around 200-250 cars booked. They will extend the date for free cancelation to 28th Feb.

Re: Driving Impressions : Hyundai Ioniq 5

800v/350KW fast charging is totally irrelevant to us. I doubt we would see 350KW chargers in India even after 5years.

We don't even have consistent 100KW chargers, majority are 25/50KW.

But that shouldn't stop the OEMs from advertising it, the car still has it and is amazing tech.

Hard disagree. Apart from the factually incorrect statement that India doesn't have DC fast charging, 800V charging is a big USP of this car for me. Reason is simple: the charging network in India is rapidly evolving. Barely 2 years back, it was impossible to travel between Chennai and Bangalore. Today, it's possible to visit any place in Kerala and Tamil Nadu from Bangalore on DC fast charging alone. Most people buying this car will hold it for 4 to 5 years and it's imperative to own a car that can make use of future infrastructure growth.

Manufacturers launching high end EVs setup 150+ KW chargers at their dealerships. Kia has already done it, BMW and other luxury manufacturers are following suit. As an EV owner, I am fine if the car even takes 20 hours to charge while at home but when I am doing a long drive, I want the fastest possible charge times because I am blocked from proceeding while the car is charging.

Re: Driving Impressions : Hyundai Ioniq 5

I was eagerly waiting, and the pricing is not that enticing to me personally. This does not have any USP compared to Kia. Kia has a futuristic design but this looks just like a big hatch. I thought the price will be saviour and I was hoping Hyundai will price it right as this is a CKD. Around 60 lakhs for this on road is not something fathomable, especially looking at big 3 German in this price even if they are ICEs. At this price not many are looking at saving money but rather snob value and style (very small percentage in eco/green factor). Both does not exist in this for me at least. Kia has an unique ravishing look, style and unconventional longish design clicking for it. 35-36 lakhs ex-showroom would have been better, to attract more into the EV net and expand your customer base first for a new tech product like this. Kona is more of value money product for me with it's own issues.

This will be Rs. 46-48l on road. No road tax in almost all states.

Excellent pricing by Hyundai. It is on-par with USA price. They should have launched AWD version as well at 50L. The RWD version don't have any USP which customers in this price range looks for.

His point was that home charging is more important to a lot of Indian buyers unlike the much advertised DC fast charging. At present, everyone is trying to be sweet to early EV adopters so maybe you can go to a KIA dealership for free DC fast charging and they will even offer you coffee and snacks. Like everything else in India, this honeymoon period will soon be over and there will be the usual queues and overcrowding. I too for one would buy an EV based on home charging and range capabilities because I would always like to avoid depending on public infrastructure in India if I can help it.

Great pricing , eventhough it's introductory. I Like the looks of Ionic more than ev6.
Absolutely hate that Hyundai calls this 'SUV' when clearly it's a hatchback!

Re: Driving Impressions : Hyundai Ioniq 5

The fast charging capability is no gimmick, it's kind of future proofing. For 90-95% of time home charging would suffice, but for the rest 5-10% I would prefer the fastest charging method available. I have no patience to wait for 1 hour or so.

I have an Android phone and an iPhone 12, the latter sucks at the time to charge it fully. The Android one is 4 years old and it has 30W charging and it's very fast in getting charged. The iPhone even though it's only an year and half is way way behind. Once used to fast charging there's no going back. There are phones which get charged in less than 10 minutes! I can't put a price on my time. However good the iPhone's are, theres no denying this fact and there's nothing one can do about it. My wife used to mock me for buying a 5G phone for her two years back. Right now she don't have to buy another phone to enjoy 5G.

Kia has 240 kWh charger in Kochi, that can recharge most compatible cars to 80% in less than 30 minutes! It's better to have options, let people use it as per needs rather than having only one option.

1. Neither Kia or Hyundai is offering any free charging.

2. Given your hypothesis of everything being crowded in India, would you prefer to be waiting among a line of Nexons at a 25 KW DC charger or go to a 240 KW charger at a Kia or Hyundai showroom? Remember none of the Tata cars can accept charging above 40 KW. So it makes no sense for them to seek out these ultra high speed chargers which are also expensive.

3. It's a lot harder to build infra when there are no users than it is to scale it when there is great demand. We have crossed the most difficult chasm of EV adoption and we will soon see a gold rush of people trying to setup the petrol pumps of the future given that this entire space has been delicensed. I predict too much supply than too little apart from few days of peak holiday traffic.

4. People buying a car with real world range of 500+ KMs are not looking to use it as a city only car. There are many options for that. Hence the DC charging speeds become way more important compared to say a Nexon EV Prime which is primarily used within cities.
