Re: Maruti-Suzuki to launch its first electric vehicle in India by 2025

World premiere of all-electric Maruti SUV concept at Auto Expo 2023.

The Maruti Suzuki YY8 electric SUV, along with its Toyota counterpart, is expected to hit the Indian market by early 2025.

Quote:
It will be co-developed with Toyota, who will also have its own version of this model. Developed for both the domestic and international markets, the YY8 will be a global product, and around 50 percent of the production will be for international markets. The YY8 will be manufactured in Suzuki’s Gujarat plant for the domestic market as well as exports.

The Maruti Suzuki YY8 electric SUV, along with its Toyota counterpart, is expected to hit the Indian market by early 2025. Sources say that the company is targeting a price in the Rs 13 lakh-15 lakh range, which means it will be a MG ZS EV-sized SUV for the price of a Tata Nexon EV

Maruti YY8 SUV will be nearly as large as a Creta
Expected to get two battery pack options with estimated range of up to 500km
Will be underpinned by the 27PL born-electric skateboard architecture
Quote:
Maruti-Suzuki will be sourcing LFP blade cell batteries from Chinese battery supplier BYD. Blade cell technology offers big benefits in terms of weight, packaging and range, and Maruti Suzuki hopes its blade cells will give the YY8 a competitive advantage, especially over Tata Motors’ hugely popular range of EVs, which use traditional (but not so efficient) LFP cylindrical cells.

The YY8 will come in both two-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations, although it’s not clear yet if AWD configuration will be offered in the domestic market. Power outputs are expected to range between 138hp and 170hp.

Re: Maruti-Suzuki to launch its first electric vehicle in India by 2025

Suzuki working on more affordable, more efficient EVs with two-speed transmissions.

Suzuki has announced it’s working with transmission engineering firm Inmotive Inc. to develop more affordable electric cars.

Quote:
The main benefit Inmotive can bring to the table for Suzuki is its two-speed EV gearbox, which is a rarity in the industry - almost every production electric car uses a single-speed transmission, the exception being the Porsche Taycan and related Audi e-tron GT.

Suzuki aims to bring the efficiency of a two-speed transmission to the more affordable end of the EV market.
Quote:
Suzuki believes that it has the possibility of extending electric vehicle range through efficient use of motor torque while also lowering costs due to using a smaller electric powertrain unit and improving driving performance in various driving scenes,” the company said in a statement confirming the joint development agreement with Inmotive.

The two-speed assembly allows for one gear to handle city and urban speeds, while a higher gear makes highway driving more efficient. It also means a smaller electric powertrain can be used thanks to the increased versatility of the gearbox.
Quote:
Through its compact and simple design, the Ingear can improve electric vehicle cost, range and efficiency

“An Ingear can extend EV range by up to 15 per cent and improve acceleration by up to 15 per cent. Its patented geometry ensures a smooth and quiet ride.”

Suzuki has confirmed this will be used in “a future Suzuki electric vehicle,” though leaves the actual application unspecified.
While some small models built by Suzuki in India could be for that market only given more relaxed safety requirements, it’s possible the electric car developments could make their way to models built there for Australia like the Jimny.

Unlike hybrids, Suzuki is better of going alone with EVs. Toyota has been a failure so far in the race so far and has continued to be reluctant when really putting in the required effort.
