Re: Maruti-Suzuki to launch its first electric vehicle in India by 2025

Thanks for the post.
Way back in 2018 and 2019, on my way to work to Navi Mumbai, I used to see the Wagon R electric being tested on road without camouflage. It then disappeared from the radar altogether.

I am a Wagon R fanboy and more so a Hybrid/Electric one. Hope Maruti delivers.

Cheers!

Isn't this the facelifted wagonR Maruti meant for sale in premium Nexa showrooms?

Re: Maruti-Suzuki to launch its first electric vehicle in India by 2025

Maruti Suzuki's new CEO has said in an interview, that an EV with a respectable range, is not possible below the ten lakh price point.

Everyone had high expectations from Maruti, to finally bring an affordable ev for the masses. Looks like its still a distant dream.

In today's market all that means is that there's a brilliant opportunity for another competitor to bring a good product in such a price bracket and capture the prospective sales.

Maruti's loss will be someone else's gain!

He does say, its possible for a car with a lower range. If they can launch a car, with 150 kms range, at around 7-8 lakh rupees, there will be takers.

Toyota’s all-out effort to make Indians love and buy hybrids, but also is focused on EV's with cost in mind

Hybrids and EV's will share many components.

Quote:
Firm to invest up to Rs 4,800 crore for production of electrified car components to keep costs from spiraling out of control
Quote:
The carmaker has announced a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Karnataka to invest up to Rs 4,800 crore in localised parts for hybrids with the aim to increase the adoption of such models in the country.
Quote:
The main reason to invest in localisation is to control costs. Having crucial parts made locally will bring down the price of hybrid vehicles, thereby making it easier for buyers in India to adopt them

The CEO lives in 1991. I'm pretty sure he said something similar about BS6 diesel engines too. Ford, Mahindra, Honda, and Tata have made BS6 diesel cars successfully. (with a few niggles here and there, but that is expected)

The Chinese are dishing out EVs in all shapes and sizes at some unbeliveable prices. Suzuki just lacks the R&D budget.

I feel like Toyota is 10 years late. They should have pioneered low-cost hybrids in the 2010s and influenced the path of the policymakers. GoI seems hellbent on leapfrogging into EVs and skipping Hybrids altogether. I don't blame them - policymakers never understood the potential of Hybrids. All they saw in the market were lame Maruti (and Mahindra?) Hybrids which milked benefits and gave users marginal gains at best. Once bitten, twice shy.

Re: Maruti-Suzuki to launch its first electric vehicle in India by 2025

As Toyota embarks on Hybrids for India, before its EV offerings in 2024/25, Toyota to make EV parts In India for domestic, export markets.

Toyota plans to make India a manufacturing hub for EV components to meet demand here as well as for export to Japan and some ASEAN countries.

On Hybrids:

Toyota is more focussed on launching its hybrid models first, which it believes are better suited to the country's aim of reducing dependence on fossil fuels and carbon emissions.
Quote:
this would also address varying consumer needs and enable "a faster transition towards an electrified future
Quote:
Building out the supply chain early will help Toyota become competitive in terms of volume and price in India
Toyota expects this to enable a "faster and smoother" shift for the Indian auto industry to electric-vehicle technology.

Maruti's first EV will be rolled out by 2024-25.

- Will not be priced below ₹ 10 lakhs in spite of heavy indigenization because of the battery

- They will be at the upper segment of the market

- MSIL’s contribution to Suzuki's global production would go beyond 60 percent, which was achieved last year.

Japan and India are faced with common challenges including realisation of carbon neutrality through utilising non-fossil fuel and renewable energy, as well as improvement of energy self-sufficiency. Also, both countries are in need of charging solutions to promote the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) in the coming years.

To achieve carbon neutrality, which is a top priority globally, both Japan and India, Suzuki`s main overseas market, share the common challenges of improving energy self-sufficiency through the use of renewable energy and developing charging infrastructure to promote EV adoption. PowerX and Suzuki`s shared objective to resolve these challenges has led to this memorandum of understanding. Through this memorandum, the two companies aim to contribute to the realisation of a carbon-neutral society by expanding the use of renewable energy and promoting the adoption of EVs.

PowerX manufactures, sells and provides services using its proprietary battery products for energy storage, ultrafast EV charging, home and marine applications. Additionally, the company is building its own GW scale battery plant in Okayama prefecture. At 5GWh or annual production capacity, it will be one of the biggest in Japan
Quote:
The PowerX Charging Station enables EV users to charge with up to 240kW of power output using renewable energy. The company plans to install 10 charging stations in the Tokyo area by mid-2023, mainly in Tokyo, and expand the number of charging stations to 7,000 across Japan by 2030.
