Iconic Toyota Celica could make a comeback as an electric or hydrogen-powered sports car

Toyota is reported to be developing a brand new sports car, with which it could revive the 'Celica' nameplate. According to a media report, the upcoming sports car is expected to be either electric or hydrogen-powered.

Toyota has trademarked the 'Celica' nameplate in North America, which has fuelled rumours about its probable return. Reports also suggest, an electric sports car is being jointly developed by Toyota and Subaru. While the development is in very early stages, this electric sports car could receive the 'Celica' nameplate, once it enters production.

The new electric sports car could be part of Toyota's recently unveiled 'bZ' series. The company had previously confirmed that it would introduce 15 new models, including 7 pure electric offerings by 2025.

However, reports suggest that there is also a possibility that the upcoming sports car could come powered by a hydrogen engine. Toyota is known to be working on FCEVs and even a hydrogen-powered combustion engine - showcased in the Corolla race car.

Having said that, all the details mentioned above though are just speculations at this point, with Toyota yet to make any official statement.

re: Iconic Toyota Celica could make a comeback as an electric or hydrogen-powered sports car

That black with pop-up lights is the 5th Gen and then the red is the 7th (& last) Gen which was discontinued in 2006. (Source : wiki). Though you could see their popularity had waned over the gens a lot (5th Gen - 200k, 7th Gen - 135k cumulative).

The yellow one in the news article looks plain ugly IMO compared to the earlier two. I hope it is just a render and the actual car will not stray too far from its earlier avatar.

Instead of a turbocharged 3-cylinder unit, the revived Celica could be powered by a turbocharged 2.0-litre 4-cylinder powerplant. This speculation ties back to a video presentation shown by Toyota at the Tokyo Auto Salon in January 2024.

The Japanese publication reported that the project was nearly halted as Toyota began to prioritise electrification efforts, especially in battery electric vehicles (BEVs). However, the project is instead ongoing following Toyota's announcement that it will collaborate with Mazda and Subaru in engine development. During that announcement, the same red-top engine was shown.

A concept that previews the upcoming Celica could be introduced at the 2025 Tokyo Auto Salon in January.

Re: Iconic Toyota Celica could make a comeback as an electric or hydrogen-powered sports car

Toyota's luxury Coupe is finally here, equipped with the 2.0L turbo engine with over 400 hp.

Quote:
It will be equipped with a 2-liter turbo engine newly unveiled by Toyota. It achieves high output and is compatible with CN fuel. There is a possibility that it will be unveiled at the Tokyo Auto Salon in 2025.
Quote:
The next-generation 2-liter turbocharged engine will also be installed in the successor to the Celica. Like the MR2 successor, it is a 4WD equipped with the GR-FOUR system, which is directly descended from the WRC machine, that is, it is a revival of the Celica GT-FOUR.

The specifications of 400ps/550Nm (about 56.1kgm) are the same as the successor to the MR2, but there is information that the Celica GT-FOUR will be a car that swings in a relatively luxurious direction.
