Mercedes mulls local assembly of EQ electric models

Mercedes-Benz launched its first all-electric SUV called the EQC in India back in October 2020. It is imported as a completely built unit (CBU), but now the carmaker is mulling local assembly of its EQ models in India.

According to Martin Schwenk, MD and CEO, Mercedes-Benz India, the company will be looking into the possibility of local production.

Mercedes is also thinking of introducing more EQ models from its global portfolio. The EQS sedan could be the next all-electric model for India, although the carmaker is yet to take a final decision on that.

On the opposite side of the price spectrum are the EQA and EQB SUVs. These can slot in below the EQC, giving Indian customers a more affordable EV option in the future.

At present, the EQC is only offered in Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore, Chennai and Hyderabad. But, the company plans to expand into other cities in the foreseeable future.

Re: Mercedes mulls local assembly of EQ electric models

A much needed move if they are actually serious about EVs in India. Both Jaguar and Volvo are committed to full electrification on a short time scale. That will give them a clear differentiation factor. Add to that the imminent entry of Tesla, and Mercedes will be in a pickle if they rely on purely CBUs for their electrics.

Will surely make their price more fair. End of the day, if you can locally assemble an AMG in India, you certainly can electric vehicles too. Additionally, EVs have greater sales prospects than AMGs.

With the recent reduction in road tax and registration charges for EV's, its quite a good value proposition.
The main deficit is charging stations. If government can implement charging points along the national highways this could surely push more customers to EV.

Re: Mercedes mulls local assembly of EQ electric models

Makes sense to locally assemble the EQS but certainly not the EQC or EQA which are just mediocre EV versions of ICE cars and are in no way competitors for EVs from Tesla or the VW group.

IMHO the EQS would be the ideal first vehicle for local assembly in India followed by the newer gen EVs from Mercedes which don't share platforms with EVs.
