Hyundai to shift focus on EVs; stops IC-engine development

Hyundai is said to soon start cutting down the number of IC engines on offer. The company will instead shift its focus towards electric vehicles.

According to a media report, the move to shift the company's focus to EVs has already received approval from its board members. Hyundai could soon cut down on at least 50% of its combustion engine-powered models, although an exact timeline for this is yet to be announced.

Reports suggest that the move has been made in order to allow Hyundai to free up resources and funding. These can then be used to focus on EVs and develop technologies such as electric motors, batteries and fuel cells. Hyundai is expected to go fully electric by 2040, however, it will initially focus on introducing zero-emission vehicles in key markets like the USA, Europe and China.

The company is also said to have stopped the development of powertrains for IC-engine vehicles. Reports also suggest that Hyundai is currently working on finalising its electrification strategy, which will be ready in the next six months.

In terms of short term goals, Hyundai along with its sister brands, Kia and Genesis, aim to sell one million electric vehicles worldwide by 2025; translating to 10% of the global EV market share.

Re: Hyundai to shift focus on EVs; stops IC-engine development

I will say this is the best way to move forward for any car manufacturer in India/abroad.

Any powertrain which is doing good now should take it to another 6-8years.
So that should give them breathing space to think of EV's.

For India, with BS6.1 norms kicked in by early 2020, we had seen many A & B segments lost their Diesel Powertrains & most of them excluding few (Tata, Mahindra, Ford, Hyundai etc.) have only Petrol lineup in their segments up until 15lakhs.

With BS6.2 planned in next couple of years, it only adds stress to car manufacturers to put these complex technologies into these smaller cars.
Further, this will only add running cost (courtesy: Ad blue etc) & in case of repairs diagnosis, it will be an issue, as we will have sensors all across the cars.

With the amount of R&D & investment put by every players (2, 3 & 4 wheelers to LCV's) we can be sure all these range anxiety etc. will be addressed by 2025 or later.
Further, if we have individual space & harvest solar power, we might be charging & running the car at Zero cost compared to the fossil fuels.

No manufacturer is putting thousands of crores of rupees in a brand-new engine anymore. But what such a development indicates is that, Hyundai thinks the current lot of engines are good enough to last another decade at the minimum, with slight tweaking from time to time for power + refinement + economy + emissions.

But I do think they will resume IC-engine development after some years. EVs are like autonomous cars. Everyone expects a drastic overnight change, but that's not going to happen. While the EVs are coming bigtime, there are solid arguments for ICE cars to exist for another 30 years minimum.

The electric car in the picture looks cute. I wish them good luck. They have given some of the very good IC engines and gearboxes. Hope their electric powertrains are also best in class.

Why does Hyundai not count India as one of its "Key Markets", where they have been the second largest movers consistently for several years now?

They are not in the top 5 selling brands in these markets, yet these markets get their best products first, and the leftovers come to our shores later. I'm sure our market has evolved enough that their best and latest EVs will find proper sales here, not just the bare minimum.

This could be because of the absolute lack of EV infrastructure in India. EVs seem practical to only those who have multiple cars in household and can use the EV only for city duties (kind of like a beater). Couple that with relatively high pricing of an EV, it's still hard to convince the buyers of going for an EV.

Finally a car which looks newly designed. A welcome relief from all those who just swapped ICE with an electric power train and slapped an "e" in the name.

Hyundai has given good enough exiting cars. I think it is safe to presume they will live up to their reputation when it comes to electric as well. Compacts with the right power / FE balance.

Looking forward to test drive one of their products whenever it's introduced (hopefully soon)
