Re: Maruti Suzuki Wagon-R spotted as a Toyota | Could be an EV

72 V would be a let down. I don't think the CCS charging station would even support that. All leading brands are making the move from 400 V to 800 V and here Suzuki is going backwards. Its better to buy a used E20 for under 3 lakh if this thing turns out to be 72 V.

True. It should've been obvious from post #12 (Maruti Suzuki Wagon-R spotted as a Toyota | Could be an EV) itself, I don't know how we all missed that.

Re: Maruti Suzuki Wagon-R spotted as a Toyota | Could be an EV

On a closer look, a blue surround is visible on the Suzuki logo which is very similar to the Branding used by Toyota Hybrid Models.
This could be a EV branding strategy which MSIL may use in future

Looks production ready, but I don't see any noise from Maruti's marketing team! Hope no nasty surprises like the 1.5L bs6 diesel.

Is it 72V ? I don't think MSIL is that stupid enough to do that. 72V systems are even rare in 2W or 3W electric vehicles. Hope it comes with a standard 250V system.

Re: Maruti Suzuki Wagon-R spotted as a Toyota | Could be an EV

Suzuki is not serious about EVs, otherwise it would not have partnered with an anti-EV Toyota. Toyota has always believed that hybrid battery EVs will give way to hydrogen cars, but they have not been able to make hydrogen cars practical afer billions spent in research. This is the reason the early sucess of Prius hybrid was never followed up with a full EV model, even after Nissan Leaf proved there is a market. Otherwise, Toyota and not Tesla would have been the king of EVs.

They don't have competitive Lithium ion batteries. So you find the Toyota boss bad-mouthing EVs while they wait for some late investments in solid state batteries to bear fruit. Likely to be beaten to it by others like VW.

The India battery plant is also heavily undersized. Current capacity will make only 6 million cells. For EV batteries, it is a tiny capacity. The total investment was only ₹1,250 crores. Global scale EV gigafactories cost billiions of $.

If anyone has Toyota EV battery cell details for India, please share. If these are the standard 2000mAh 18650 cells, each cell is nominally 7.4WHr. You need 135 batteries per KWH. In EVs, 10% each on bottom and top end is normally not usable if you want your battery to last many years. Adding this 20% gives you 162 cells per usable KWH. That means you need approx 6,500 cells for 40KWH and a little more than 4,000 cells for a measly 25KWH. Gives you only 900-1500 cars if the plant is running at full capacity of 6 million cells!

(Even this small volume may not be available initially, as a new battery plant takes time to stabilise and reach 100% capacity utilisation.)

We cannot expect Suzuki to come out with meaningful volumes of even a single model of EVs or an aggressive price strategy to push initial adoption, if their appetite is only for a token 900-1500 cars an year.

25KWH will be about 150km of real life driving range. (Could be slightly better in slow city traffic, and Suzuki may have given it a 2-3 speed AMT gearbox to improve efficiency and range at highway speeds). Range anxiety is the biggest concern of buyers for EVs. I hope Suzuki do not completely cripple the car by giving it a stupidly tiny battery size. There will not be too many buyers at 25KWH/150km range, unless it is priced aggressively. Anything smaller will be complete disaster, unless the plan is for a petrol-battery hybrid and not an EV.

Suzuki will then spend the next 3-5 years talking about how there is no real EV market in India!

Maruti Suzuki Wagon R EV spotted without any camouflage for the first time

Maruti Suzuki Wagon R EV spotted without any Camouflage for the first time. The testing for this electric version of the Wagon R has started for a long time, it first started in 2018. Now, there have been more than 50 prototypes vehicles that have been put to test. While we are not completely sure about this, but we believe that when Maruti unveils its electric vehicle, that would be sold via Nexa dealership outlets.

Re: Maruti Suzuki Wagon-R spotted as a Toyota | Could be an EV

A 120 kmph capability, 200 km real world range and a 7 lakh rupees price tag for the bare bones variant would disrupt our Indian EV market. An EV does make tremendous sense in the daily commuting scenarios especially in this day and age of sky high fuel prices. Hope they price it well and play their value for money card right.
