Tesla Model S Plaid is ready | 1.99 seconds 0-60 | 1000+ horsepower | 390 mile range

Mr Musk has announced that deliveries for the Tesla Model S Plaid will start on June 3rd.

Why should we care?

This is why:
  1. 1.99 seconds 0-60
  2. 1020 hp peak power
  3. 390 miles of range
All this while seating 5 in comfort and with a boatload of boot space.

I am worried about my wallet
Exciting times for EV rollercoasters!

Re: Tesla Model S Plaid is ready | 1.99 seconds 0-60 | 1000+ horsepower | 390 mile range

1000 horsepower for a road worthy car that under law could be bought by any one and driven on common property roads used by pedestrians, bicyclists, slow moving vehicles, two wheelers etc??!!?? My opinion will not find popular appeal amongst our million odd readers but this in my view is deeply irresponsible of Tesla who have simply desiged a car because they can without a shred of thought for the safety of others and the maturity of those who will buy and drive. Fulfilling carnal desires, because you can, may be the philosophy of some but does not apply to large swathes of humankind.

I sometimes get the impression that car lovers don't always understand what 1000 horsepower means. The Spitfire fighter made famous in World War II had a Rolls Royce Merlin engine which in early marks developed a little over 1000 shp. The famous Cheetah helicopter that serves the Indian Army at altitudes as high as 20,000 feet is powered by a ~600 shp engine.

For road driving, that too on common public roads we don't need 1000 hp for anything except our egos. Very sad move by Tesla.

Insane charging time shown off at the delivery event. 15 mins of charging equals to 186 miles (300km) of range which is about a round trip from Mumbai to Lonavla.

"Faster than a Porsche safer than a Volvo" - Elon Musk at the event.

View the attachment below for all of the stats.

I think Tesla's goal is not to have humans drive their cars. Their goal is to eventually let AI drive people around. And if a computer is driving them on roads, it is going to be as perfect as possible. And having 1000hp on tap is a good thing when the computer is handling that power. It would use it safely to get out of dangerous situations quickly and not for "fun". We're obviously at a transition point. The technology for quick cars has arrived earlier than the technology for self-driving. I'm sure many countries will regulate this or put in provisions like "any car above 1000hp has to be handled by a computer or AI".

Obviously with great power, comes great responsibility. And it is actually very easy to get incredible power ratings out of electric motors because they are so efficient and because they generate rotational energy and not translational energy like gasoline engines. So I don't think they were being "irresponsible" or being hedonistic. I think they were just improving upon their design in an evolutionary manner.

Jay Leno was able to drive the new Model S Plaid and even tries to break a quarter mile record.

Jay Leno shares his experience.

I have seen this sentiment for every leap in technology - my late grandfather and I used to enjoy debating such a viewpoint on everything from ordinary accessible cars (if I remember it was the Maruti 800 that he thought was a death ball) to mobile phones with access to the (scary) world wide web. A humble smartphone in todays world has more computing power and networking capabilities than the missions that sent man to the moon.

Not only that, I have also caught myself feeling this was on another thread on team-bhp (Ford to make all-electric F150) . The F150 lightening pickup with ~560 hp at a $50k price point is scarier to me than the $130k four door sedan Tesla builds.

But the more I think about this the more it feels like this stems from being scared of change vs some genuine additional risk these new cars bring about.

If anything these cars will be much better equipped with active and passive safety devices compared to some of the 20 year old pickup trucks we see around here.

Long winded reply to say that just like many other technological advancements this one also looks scary - but we will be fine. There will be bad incidents for sure, but its not like you can not kill someone in a Maruti 800 either. The best we can do it adapt and learn, in my humble opinion.
