The BYD e6 electric MPV has been spotted in Chennai. The car is expected to be launched in India in the final quarter of 2021. Initially, it will be imported as a completely built unit (CBU) under the rule which allows for the import of 2,500 units without the need for homologation.



The BYD e6 looks like a typical MPV with a large greenhouse. This particular car is the second generation model. It has a perforated front fascia with projector headlamps on either side, while the rear gets sleek wraparound LED taillights.



On the inside, the BYD e6 gets a dashboard with a floating 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system in the centre. A unique feature of this head-unit is that the screen can be rotated by 90-degrees to switch between landscape and portrait modes. The car also gets 6-way adjustable front seats, an electronic parking brake, 4 airbags, traction control, ABS, hill-start assist and a tyre pressure monitoring system.



The BYD e6 is powered by a 71.1 kWh battery pack which is said to offer a range of 450-500 km on a single charge. It comes with a 40 kW AC on-board charger which has DC charging capability. The company claims that it can recharge the battery to 100% in just 1.5 hours.



We have been told that the BYD e6 could be priced around Rs. 20-25 lakh. It is one of the three EVs including a 7-seater that the company plans to launch in the Indian market.

On the first glance, I thought that Innova Crysta is due for a facelift again. The front has so much resemblance to the facelifted Crysta!

I think BYD also bought another Electric MPV based on the Nissan Evalia, T3 IIRC (https://www.byd.com/en/news/2019-09-...and-T3-Minivan)! Never saw it on the road, or saw one anywhere in India. Could not find any Website with more details of the same.

Hope they take the Indian market seriously, and develop a website and send the cars to Auto Reviewers so that more people know about such vehicles.

They can sell them online, and provide Doorstep Servicing for peace of mind of the owners. The vehicle looks good, and full charge in 1 hour with 40kW charger is a good feature, for long distance commutes in an EV. Stop for a loo and snack break, and you're ready for another long commute.

Heard that BYD electric division is good, and I think they are supplying Electric Buses to some of the state transport departments? How are they performing in the Indian conditions?

I have hands-on experience (in 2018) with some BYD ICE cars and I would say that I haven't seen any shoddier than the BYD ones I had experienced!

From the ergonomics, built quality, part quality to the paint finish (most horrible ) one, everything looked so underwhelming and cheap!

That 450-500km range though, is most likely on NEDC. EPA figure, which is regarded as strictest test figure, would be closer to 320km. Not bad for a 7 seater.

The resemblance to Innova, as other BHPians note, is indeed uncanny. The pricing though, interests me. ₹25L for imported unit comes to about ₹15L Before import duty. If these cars could be manufactured or even assembled locally, it would give tough competition in EV segment.

Given range more than Nexon EV and ability to seat 7 could be a nice combination as well as competition for our local EVs like the Nexon. While I doubt it due to the Chinese origins, it could be a good vehicle for the EV tenders floated for government by EESL, since it is quite similar to ertiga in size and cheaper than the Innova in price.

I hope Indian manufacturers don’t lose out to Chinese in car market like they unfortunately did in smartphones. The price seems too good to be true, just like Chinese electronics items.

The BYD e6 is the electric version of the BYD Song Max. The car does look like the designers spent a lot of time gawking at the Innova Crysta and then to take their mind off it, went ahead and spent some more time with the Mahindra Marrazo.



The one spotted in India is the second generation BYD e6. The first generation is a rather popular car in China and was sold in many European countries too, being popular with fleet operators. Driving range varied from 300 to 400 Kms depending on the version on sale.

Thats impressive mileage for an EV of this size. It resembles Crysta both in size and looks.

Can they not put this powertrain in a smaller car ( sedan or compact SUV ) and increase the mileage even more? A sedan/csuv for 20 lacs with a 600kms mileage on a charge will do wonders in the market.

Difficult to believe that such a large car with just a 41kWh battery pack will be even certified for 450-500km range. But I wouldn't put it past ARAI

The birdie adds that the MID showed 75% battery level and ~320 km of driving range left.

Based on this link the E6 uses a 71.1kWh battery and has a range of 522km (City) and 415km (Combined) WLTC.

Charging speed is not very impressive - capped at 60kW on CCS. It supports 40kW AC charging, but I wonder if it will be easy to find chargers which supports that.

71KWH means roughly it will take around 1.5hrs on 50KW and 3hrs on 25KW DC fast chargers respectively. Huge capacity is good for long range.

Interestingly BYD & Toyota just fell into a JV in China for development of EVs and battery technology-BYD TOYOTA EV TECHNOLOGY CO., LTD. (BTET).

BYD and Toyota will work together to meet the diverse needs of customers by researching and developing BEVs that appeal to customers and promoting their widespread adoption and also hope to contribute to improving the environment in China.

BYD Company Ltd. (BYD) and Toyota Motor Corporation (Toyota) announced today that preparations have proceeded since they signed an agreement for the establishment of a joint venture company to conduct research and development of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) on November 7, 2019, and registration of the new company has been completed. Operations are scheduled to commence in May 2020. The name of the new company is BYD TOYOTA EV TECHNOLOGY CO., LTD. (BTET). Hirohisa Kishi from Toyota will serve as chairman, and Zhao Binggen from BYD will be the chief executive officer (CEO).

For someone who wants to use this car as personal vehicle, how will they manage to get 40 Kw of free load to charge this? MG ZS EV comes with a 8 Kw wall mounted charger for which you need to have that much free load. Am I missing something here?

The maximum you will be able to manage at home will be a Level 2 setup, like the ZS EV charger that you pointed out. These offer up to 19 kW, varying from model to model.

Anything higher than that will be found only at public charging stations with DC charging so you're going to have to wait till they're more widespread to achieve that kind of charging speed. As a member pointed out earlier, 40 kW AC charging is probably extremely rare if not non existent. I'm sure the BYD will still charge at Level 2 rates, it just won't achieve its maximum potential.

None of the EVs charge at DC fast chargers at the same rate throughout the SoC range. Until 50% SoC the battery charges at maximum rate (50kW in your eg. )allowed by car and then charging speed starts to drop slowly. Only few EVs go upto 80% SoC with maximum power.

So with a 50kW DC fast charger, it takes 2~2,5hrs to charge fully. Moreover, the whole concept of DC fast chargers is to charge to say upto 75~80% and continue journey. It is also not good for battery health to keep charging to full everytime.

Yup, none gonna charge 0-100, they are top up chargers used for 20-90% based on requirement. Time spend on public charger is situational, not same always.
