Mercedes-Benz has announced that the brand’s EQS luxury electric sedan will have its global debut on April 15, 2021. The new Mercedes-Benz EQS is based on the brand’s Vision EQS concept first showcased back in late 2019.



The new Mercedes-Benz EQS once introduced will be the brand’s flagship model under its new ‘EQ’ range. The EQS electric sedan will also debut the brand’s latest electric vehicle architecture (EVA), which is expected on future luxury and premium models as well.

Mercedes-Benz also states that the new EQS will offer its driver and passengers a unique combination of technology, design, connectivity and functionality. This will be further simplified by the presence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology.

However, the most important feature on the EQS will be its dashboard, which is expected to debut the brand’s MBUX Hyperscreen. This screen comprises of three displays under a single Gorilla glass, spanning the entire length of the dashboard.

Mercedes-Benz is yet to announce the exact technical details of the electric powertrain. However, the company has confirmed that the EQS is expected to offer a maximum range of 700km, as per the WLTP cycle. The Mercedes-Benz EQS electric sedan is scheduled to go on sale internationally later this year.

The Mercedes-Benz EQS has been revealed

The EQS is the first in an extended range of EQ models to use Mercedes-Benz’s dedicated EVA (Electric Vehicle Architecture) platform.



The EQS measures 5216mm long, 1926mm wide and 1512mm tall and 3210mm of wheelbase - 106mm longer than the S-Class





Mercedes EQS is available in two trims, both receiving energy from a 108.7-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery.

The base model EQS 450+ which features a single electric motor on the rear axle produces 329 hp and 550 Nm. 0-62mph comes under 6.2sec

Range topping EQS 580 4Matic is all-wheel drive with a motor on each axle produces 516 hp and 828 Nm. 0-62mph comes under 4.2sec

Mercedes-Benz says to expect 770 kilometers (or 478 miles) on the WLTP standard.

The EQS can recharge from 10 to 80 percent in 35 minutes via 110-kW DC fast charging



The interior of the EQS is dominated by Mercedes' new digital Hyperscreen – a one-piece curved screen that stretches across the width of the dashboard and houses three digital displays – one for the instruments, one for the central infotainment and air-con functions, and another ahead of the front passenger.



It is controlled by the latest generation of MBUX – an operating system that supports touch and conversational speech input as standard as well.









EQS does without a front storage compartment like many rivals, its claimed 610 litres of boot space is 60 litres more than that offered by the S-Class and it extends to 1770 litres when the split folding rear seats are folded.



Also planned is an even more powerful version of the EQS from Mercedes' AMG performance car with a total output of above 700hp.

The interiors and tech inside the car are just mind-blowing. I got so overwhelmed watching the videos and reading the reviews of this car, that in the end I wondered what have we made of the car- that simple automobile! The tech is astounding and the effort behind creating it remarkable, but at least for me its just too much of everything!

PS: I get a feeling that in the EV world, classes of car will be distinguished by number of features/ accoutrements packed in a car. Luxury cars will have the most complex features. Performance, range over a period of time may reach an equilibrium, where any one can offer the latest tech in a car of any class.

What a desirable car, what a good looker! Tomorrow's generation will value green, sustainability, renewable, carbon neutral, etc a lot more than the current one. We might be viewed by the youth of 2050 as polluting ICE loving dinosaurs. I am glad main line automobile companies like MB are putting their best foot forward so we, the customer, have a real choice.

I worry about that overdose of electronics and touch pads. This is a car, not an Airbus A350. Tactile switches, buttons and toggles are better ergonomically than touch screens. But then more electronics = more ASS revenues!?!

It will probably be priced out of reach (of ordinary folks like me) in India. But then there is hope. Well done Mercedes. I hope you rebuild your reputation for reliability and solid engineering which you lost two decades ago. Muttering to myself, "Better start saving up".
