Jeep is taking big steps towards electrification. The Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid is already a reality, and a 4xe version of the new Grand Cherokee is coming. All of this is paving the way for Jeep's first fully electric production vehicle, and it could arrive sooner than you think. That's because a Wrangler EV concept is barely a month away.

If you caught Jeep's commercial during Super Bowl LV, you likely noticed a shout-out to a new Jeep website titled The Road Ahead. As the name suggests, it walks visitors through some of Jeep's forthcoming plans, including the launch of the reborn Grand Wagoneer, autonomous driving tech, online shopping, and the arrival of the aforementioned plug-in hybrids. However, nestled among all the infoboxes on the page was something hiding in plain sight – the first fully electric Wrangler.

imply called the Wrangler BEV Concept, a short video morphs between a silhouetted Wrangler body (seen at the top of this article) and a cutaway showing an electric powertrain (below). No information is offered on the concept vehicle, other than it will be part of Jeep's concept lineup at the annual Easter Jeep Safari in Moab. For 2021, it's scheduled to run from March 28 through April 3.

The zoomed-in screenshot gives us a taste of what's under the electric Wrangler's skin. We see what appears to be multiple battery packs connected to an electric motor in front, sending power through a traditional-looking transmission and transfer case. It's certainly a different approach compared to other electric vehicles that incorporate multiple motors for four-wheel-drive capability. This concept apparently adapts traditional off-road technology with electric propulsion; a novel approach that might appeal to four-wheeling purists unsure of electric power in such applications.

Perhaps of greater interest here is the prospect of a production version. Jeep introduced the Wrangler 4xe hybrid concept in January 2020 and followed-up with a production version in September. As such, a fully electric Wrangler concept shown in late March could mean a production Wrangler EV might debut before the end of the year.

Good to see that large seven slat grille kept intact, I was a bit worried that the closed slats will look more weird but turned out to be pretty good. Illuminated grille in production version? Nah, I don't think so.

However, the bumper profile looks too strikingly similar to the Bimbra 4x4 mod of the Thar 2020 (I know which is copied). It would be funny to see FCA's reaction on seeing both together.

Electric Jeep Wrangler teased- named Magneto

The American brand's off-road icon looks set to ditch petrol power, with the reveal of an electric concept.

With the new image's brighter lighting and different camera angle, it's now clear the battery-electric show car will be badged Magneto – a name trademarked by Jeep with US intellectual property officials in early February 2021.

Interestingly, despite the lack of a combustion engine, the latest teaser shows the Magneto will feature a prominent bonnet scoop

Jeep previews electric Wrangler with six-speed manual Magneto concept

4x4 makes first appearance as an EV, pairing an electric motor to a manual gearbox and clutch

The Magneto's single-motor powertrain is said to offer performance on a par with the standard Wrangler's 3.5-litre Pentastar petrol V6

The motor is mated to a six-speed manual transmission and a clutch that operates "as it would with an internal combustion engine". Regenerative deceleration like that allowed by a conventional EV's single-speed transmission still features when the clutch is engaged.

Jeep is launching a Charging Network to Facilitate EV Off-Roading



Over the next 12 months, Jeep will launch a network of Level 2 EV charging stations placed at off-road trailheads across the United States, starting with trails in Moab, Utah, Big Bear, California, and the Rubicon Trail, also in California.



Jeep's first plug-in, the Wrangler 4xe, will fully charge in about two hours at the stations.
