In an emergency i could maybe push the control stalk and change the gearbox from P to D or D to R and get out of the way but expecting everything to be done by AI and or through the ipadesque central screen which may glitch at the time of emergency is just taking things a little too far too soon. We already have people who cannot parallel park properly or just drive because they have to not because they wish to, many other factors are in play, in my opinion this deletion is unnecessary at this time in human life, but as they say that change is constant, we are being pushed and forced to move from being in control of our vehicle to surrendering control to AI which will soon drive us from A to B while we go about twiddling our thumbs on our ipads or our iphones while we are being transported by AI.
It was my thinking that on a road trip pulling over to on the side of the road and stopping to see surprising things like a sunset or a fascinating building or any other structure whether man made or made by nature were a part of enjoying the journey rather than being fastidious about reaching the destination, however with us giving up those privileges and spending our time buried in our devices, is that the way to live, and is that the way forward ? Well im not in agreement but do we have a choice to decide on that -- is my question. Life was about enjoying the journey and not only the destination but does that still hold true ?
For now i will continue to enjoy driving my none Tesla AI cars happily. The future can wait for some more time, as thankfully our roads in India will not be AI self driving friendly anytime soon. |
I guess everything is not as gloom-doom as you think - Tesla's got you covered (well, sort of). - https://www.motortrend.com/news/tesl...-plaid-shifter
Here's an alternative way to shift gears on the new Model S that does not involve touching the touchscreen. This hasn't been talked about much because these buttons are unlit by default, and only light up under specific conditions (outlined in the User Manual below). Of course, like any other modern electronic gear shift system, it has enough lock-outs to prevent unintended gear changes while driving at speed.
The Model S User Manual walks you through all the details.
Personally, I still prefer the older style stalks for gear shifting, because they are the most intuitive - picture a tight k-turn in a parking space where you're driving-reversing-driving-reversing, in the Model 3 it is super intuitive as your right hand never has to leave the steering wheel (plus, all Teslas allow changing gear direction while the vehicle is moving <5mph, so you can do a K-turn super quickly in the Model 3)!
Hopefully Smart Shift lives up to its name and people don't miss their gear stalks. Off-topic: In general, I think all ICE cars with Automatic transmissions should switch to a gear stalk like the Model 3/Y (Mercedes already does this, in fact the older Model S/X gear stalks were borrowed from the Mercedes parts bin) - it frees up storage space on the center console, instead of having a big unnecessary blob in that space. Not to mention that the driving experience is also wayy superior, with both your hands always at the steering wheel and never having to take them off - feels like a Formula 1 car!
To my point about storage cubbies above, compare the two vehicles below - 2020 Toyota Camry vs GMC Terrain SUV - the Toyota has a huge, technically totally unnecessary gear shifter which doesn't leave any room for cubbies, while the GMC has a nice big storage bin due to the freed-up volume, although they could've designed the storage better (once again, I do NOT like the button approach, just pointing out the interior console packaging perspective).
