So, Nios which is a Chinese EV car manufacturer has come out with its ET7 electric car. The standard edition comes with a price tag of 448,000 yuan (US$ 69,184) which has a range of 500 km using a 70 kwh battery pack. The premier edition goes 700 km on a 100 kwh battery while the extended edition will go 1000 km using a 150 kwh battery.

Competition is heating up in China’s electric vehicle market as almost 200 carmakers and internet start-ups jostle for supremacy in an industry where one in every five cars will be powered by a non-fossil fuel source by 2025. China, the world’s largest market for all vehicles since 2009, also has the most number of electric cars on the nation’s roads.

NIO’s third model since the six-year-old carmaker’s establishment comes as Xpeng Motors is poised to roll out a lidar-based autonomous driving system – something that Tesla’s chief executive Elon Musk derided as too expensive – while internet search giant Baidu prepares to partner China’s largest carmaker Geely Automobile to make electric cars.

The ET7 is NIO’s first sedan, following its ES8 and ES6 sports-utility vehicles. The carmaker’s shares rose nearly 10 per cent to US$58.92 overnight in New York, giving it US$92 billion in market value, more than the century-old Ford Motor. The 47-year old Li, son of a coal mine worker, is worth US$9.1 billion, according to Bloomberg’s billionaire ranking.

“NIO is sending a strong message that it will stand firm in making better and smarter cars than its rivals including Tesla,” said Peter Chen, an engineer with car component maker TRW. “Judging from the ET7’s design and price tag, NIO is hoping to keep its edge over other leading EV makers with its technology and driving range.”

“We are targeting at the established marques powered by internal combustion engine,,” he said during a Sunday media briefing after the launch. “We do not view Tesla as our main rival.”
The ET7 is equipped with NIO’s autonomous driving system (NAD). It claims to be the first electric car model in the world to feature an 8-megapixel self-driving HD camera, giving the vehicle a significant increase in image data collection capability compared to the 1.2-megapixel of its competitors.

The computer system on board has seven times the computing power of Tesla’s FSD, Li said. The 4D dynamic body control system with high precision maps and sensors can actively adjust the vehicle’s suspension by sensing road surface bumps in advance, Li said in his presentation.

Model Y, with a price range between 339,900 yuan and 369,900 yuan, sparked a buying frenzy in Shanghai soon after its launch, extending the waiting period for delivery until the second quarter. Some NIO customers had reneged on their orders to switch to the Model Y, according to local media reports, without citing sources or providing details.

Now, while we generally dismiss Chinese players, this could genuinely be the OnePlus vs Apple moment for EVs. The Chinese have invested billions in EV car tech and are already ahead of other carmakers - especially those from Japan. Offcourse, many EV startups have come and gone without launching a single product to the market. This will be an interesting market to watch!

Watch out, entrenched car makers. China already knows how to mass produce better than anyone else. Once they figure out the engineering of cars (on the way) and design (getting there), they are going to give you sleepness nights. In another 10 - 15 years, I fully expect Hyundai / Kia kind of carmakers to emerge from China. At least 2 truly global players.

Back to the Nios, its easy to make claims. I'll believe the 1000 km range when an independent non-Chinese agency verifies it.

This is 150kwh with Solid State Battery, first manufacturer to produce that. The range is NEDC scale, which is equivalent to ARAI. The SSB is slated to have 360wh/kg energy efficiency whereas current batteries have half of that.
They have also stated that existing owners will be able to swap the batteries once the SSB systems go live.

If Solid state batteries have arrived, its really encouraging. Expect Elon to say something disgusting as he usually does.
The south china post gives the sales numbers of EVs for China. Its not huge but I think its on its way. More Chinese makers will increase the size of market.

Indians will buy Chinese vehicles since they are ahead of us and also have their own market to fall back on.

NEDC is overly optimistic with range numbers and ARAI is even worse.

WLTP (European) = 0.8 * NEDC
EPA (USA) = 0.7 * NEDC

So, for this 150 kWh model, the range will be ~700 km on EPA and ~800 km on WLTP which is not really revolutionary in terms of range. Tesla Model S with 100 kWh battery has ~650 km of EPA range. Lucid air with 113 kWh battery estimated to have 830km of EPA range.

On the other hand, 360 wh/kg is very good. Also, these are at the cell level not pack level. Currently, LG Chem batteries have 265 wh/kg at the cell level. So, while these batteries have very good density, the range is very low compared to existing batteries and vehicles, whether its due to the inefficiency of motors or batteries.

Mind my ignorance but what exactly is a solid state battery? Is it more energy-dense? Is it the monocell design that Elon Musk was talking about in his tweet on the Apple electric car?

It is a beautiful car indeed and the range is quite impressive. No matter how much my heart and some part of the brain says to go for it (If it is sold where I reside and could afford it), some part of my brain would be dead against it considering the cybersecurity with all the connected car and ADAS features owing to Chinese origin.

NIO has launched the ET7 electric sedan that promises an every higher range as compared to Tesla’s Model S. The new ET7 electric sedan was unveiled at the Sichuan provincial capital of Chengdu by NIO’s Chief Executive William Li Bin. Bookings are now open.

The Standard Edition offers a range of 500 kms with a 70 kWh battery pack which is around 7 percent higher than that offered by the Tesla Model S. This goes up to 700 kms on the Premium Edition with a 100 kWh battery while the Extended Edition has a range of 1000 kms with a 150 kWh battery. These figures are as per China’s NEDC testing standards while on Europe’s WLTP test it could give a lower figure. The Premium Edition is priced at 536,000 yuan (INR 603,6465) while no price details of the Extended Edition have been revealed as on date.

NIO’s ET7 electric sedan will be powered by a single powertrain. This dual motor system offers a combined 644 hp power and 626 lb/ft (850 Nm) torque. Acceleration from 0 to 100 kmph is achieved in 3.9 seconds.

Chinese EV maker Nio has confirmed its new ET7 saloon will arrive on the German market in late 2022.



The car has already entered trial production at Nio's Hefei plant ahead of Chinese deliveries starting in early 2022.

Speaking to German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung recently, chairman William Li said "very high" interest from German customers has prompted the firm to commit to a European roll-out next year.

Very nice proportions. The rear section from the last two photos or post#13 reminds me of the BMW 5 GT series whereas the white ones resemble the Audi A5,A7 series. Probably angle of photographs.

I have been on Nio cars several times and drove one of Nio SUVs once, they are super slick, no wonder they call themselves the Oneplus of EVs. Amazing interiors, very very useful features albeit copied from Tesla, but they are extremely functional.
