Norway is the first country in the world with BEVs (Battery Electric Vehicles) market share of more than 50% for a whole year. In 2020, BEVs reached 54.3%, up from 42.4% in 2019.

In December 2020 BEV market share reached 66% while plug-in EVs (BEVs + PHEVs) reached 87% market share.

This is due to a clear vision defined and executed by the government and the people supporting the transformation. Impressive feat from making policy to execution of the complete ecosystem: the charging infrastructure development, supporting networks, renewable power sources.

Interesting to see that the diesel vehicles sold more that petrol ones - might be due to very specific application where there is no alternative in EV.

That, and their sovereign wealth fund is also a loudmouth in the carbon neutral investment game. Perhaps they can go green by shutting down oil production completely, that's hard to do when you have something to lose.

Going green with oil exports, you couldn't make this up.

The population of Norway is 5.x million people. The population of Bangalore is 8.x million people. Their GDP per capita is $80k!

So in business sense, Norway is like a startup with adequate funds to do whatever they like. It is commendable that people in the Nordics are conscious of climate change and ensure a safe future for their next generations.

Almost all Norwegian people (not counting immigrants from Eastern Europe) are in top of food chain and hence they bother for other things.
Also, government rewards people buying electric vehicles such as allowing them to drive in bus lane, etc. Government want electric car buying to become way of life so that when they remove the subsidies, they shouldn’t get a rude shock.
I saw a REVA first in Oslo.

PS - I lived in Norway for 3 years.

Norway has spent BILLIONS on bike expressways too where cyclists maintain upto 40kmph with ease and form over 5 percent of all journeys nationwide. It's population is 50 lacs (270 times lower than us). They have incentivised the EV users by 'allowing' them to use 'bus-lanes' and have heavily subsidized them. Even such negligible samples need to have heavy dependency on cycling before experimenting in electric means of travel. In Sweden, close to 20 percent of all journeys are by cycle.

These are tiny and privileged samples which can be safely ignored when discussing the feasibility of EVs in our nation.

All I can think when I read this thread title is how well hypocrisy has been packaged.

While personal vehicles have been switched to EVs, when the conscientious Nordics sleep, fresh "organic" produce from all over Europe, best wines from France, Caviar from Caspian, chocolates from Switzerland are all freighted across the country so that anytown, Norway can have stocked shelves by the morning.

Any chance of giving up that lifestyle and the carbon footprint that causes? How dare you?!!

Come on guys why so much negativity on a positive step. Neither this article or the people of Norway ever claimed they are the best country or they are the best people in the world. The government of Norway is doing what's good for its people, for the environment without losing their primary income. They are not knocking our doors to boost their EV numbers.

Yes, Norway has to do more in reducing carbon emissions in oil exploration particularly the Arctic oil, their largest oil company is also divesting it's oil assets very fast. As long as the world is addicted to oil even if Norway downsizes it's oil exploration there's going to be no impact on overall emissions as we will buy oil from somewhere else.

What we can understand by looking at Norway numbers are, if Norway can do what it did when EV prices are so high, we may replicate similar growth with lower EV prices, starting in 2-3 years with governments support.

take a chill pill bro, we all have hypocrisy in us, and it varies, if we all are expected to be "Angels" then nothing good will come out in this world. This is a baby step in the path of going for sustainable development. You should commend the step and not harp on about the others. About your freight comment, which I am guessing is about ships/ferry, they are also working on those as well.
Your statement is equivalent to an outsider commenting about India's coal power plant when a solar power plant is inaugurated or when we say we have met our renewable energy goal etc.

Yes a wonderful documentary which was released in 2019 with videos from 2005-2009 on why solar still has some problems. Do you agree with this documentary because it has some information or because it suits you inspite of all climate scientists disagreement.I remember sharing a debunking video long back, which you do not agree for obvious reasons.

I would really like to hear what would be your plan to decrease GHG, no need to answer if you deny climate change.
