They are trying to launch around Diwali time and the price is expected to start from 40L (Ex-Showroom). This came a credible source from the factory.
Another update the project is called Yoda internally. The low entry price is for the entry level standard range and price might be aggressive due to "first impression" motives.

It's both, engine and value. Have a look here-

EVs enjoy 60% import for CBU since they don’t have an engine thus lowest eng disp slab is applicable.
I have tried to find info about customs on EV but couldn't. So, perhaps your logic of Nil cylinder and 60% may be correct. But it's a good time that we should have lower Customs for EV.

It will be very difficult for CBU and if the duty is indeed 60%. 40KUSD retail roughly translates to 30 Lac, adds 60% customs and 5% GST, and we are looking at 50 Lac INR.

They can probably remove the self-driving and other features that won't be practical here, in which case, they may get the cars at lower rates in India. So, a different name for this project sounds very credible

I have an entry level standard range plus here in NL for the past 2 years and with our weather in India we should easily get 300+kms real world range on a single charge. Of course what I mean real world is keep the airco at comfortable levels, driving at speeds like a normal ICE car. And the stop light sprints are going to be fun as well.

If they price it right, this is going to be a popular choice for people choosing in the entry level luxury market.

Re: Tesla to start testing the Model 3 in India!

Pretty exciting times ahead ! Although this is not a mass segment car, this car does have potential to become a very popular sight on roads. All those celebrities who have been talking about the environment and stuff on similar lines should get one of these right away. If not their primary ride, it can well serve as the second car in their garage. Such moves can also build brand visibility in the country and take the EV road ahead in our country.

On a side note, is Tesla planning any charging stations or mobile charging trucks ? If so it would be a great business for them on the side if they can provide power to non-Tesla EVs too. One of the main hurdles going ahead with EVs would be the lack of charging stations and it would be nice if tesla can find a solution to that problem.

Re: Tesla to start testing the Model 3 in India!

As someone who has bought 3 new cars including a Nexon EV in the last year I’m super excited about this launching in India. If it’s actually priced under 50l I’ll be amongst the first to book this.

Its the iPhone of the cars! How many techie's would buy the likes of A/C/GLA over model 3? It has immense potential to sweep these. Remember also, the service costs and running costs would be a fraction which aligns very well with us Indians! The total cost of ownership over 5-6 years would look like an Octavia (maybe a City?) than the Merc's

The biggest difference in my opinion is, while a BMW 3/Merc C/A4 run at 10-14₹/km, a model 3 runs at 1₹/km(50p on solar). If model 3 is priced below the competition, it will take away atleast 2-3k sales per year from an already small market. Mercedes looks like getting prepared with no discounts. With 8 years warranty on the battery, there is nothing to worry about, the interiors may not be luxurious or to the liking of everyone but the fit and build quality have greatly improved and comparable to other cars in its class.

Hope Tesla place atleast 50 superchargers strategically(along the golden quadrilateral, East west corridor & North south corridors). As an example, they need 5 superchargers to cover 1500kms between Mumbai - Delhi with their SR+.

Well said I had the same thought and calculation in mind for running costs. Big Germans cost a minimum of ₹2/KM in maintenance whereas EV maintenance is limited to brake pad checkup and wiper fluid top-up as per other Tesla owners. Hope the M3 LR falls within the 50L bracket.

More pics of Tesla Model 3 in India:

The right-hand-drive Tesla Model 3 cars coming to India will be manufactured at Tesla's plant in China

Quote:
The car on test is the dual-motor variant, meaning it has a motor on each axle for an electric all-wheel-drive setup. The test mule is running the standard 18-inch wheels with the aero kit and is shod with the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S performance tyres
Quote:
the Model 3 to be launched in India will be the rear-wheel-drive only and AWD will be given a miss, much like its competitors - the C-Class, 3 Series and A4.

This is one car/EV for which I might forego my no sedan rule. Hope Tesla makes necessary modifications to suit Indian driving and road conditions.
Waiting eagerly for the launch.

This is exciting news.

The base M3 (white, black interior, standard wheels and autopilot) is $39,995. Any other color is an additional $1,000 and full self driving is $10,000 extra.

Maybe Tesla will bring the $25,000 model that they are building specifically for the Chinese market, to India.

Finally, I hope GoI does what the EU did and forces Tesla to use the CCS combo connector for charging instead of their proprietary superchargers. This will lead to consolidation of the fast charging infrastructure instead of fragmenting it between Tesla superchargers and CCS chargers.

It is believed that Tesla will come with CCS2 charging standard similar to EU. Also it makes a lot of sense as for the initial days propitiatory connector will limit the travel distance to the maximum battery capacity. I believe the China made Tesla's come with CCS2 connector as standard. The real question lies with the launch price of the car. Hope Tesla males it affordable here.
