Well i hope since most EV's are heavier than their ICE counterparts so less chances of floating. And no concern about air intake/exhaust and all water ingress points for ICE engine, the IP67 rated engine & motor should hopefully be able to mange water wading.

My personal experience on 5th(Monday). i had taken the 500 bus service via bellandur road around late afternoon, they were operating an electric one. At the water crossing it seemed like the conductor was encouraging the driver to go ahead fearlessly as it was an electric bus and nothing would happen.(Sorry i am not proficient in kannada, but can understand in bits & pieces)

The scene was apparently something like this (from within the bus):

Re: Hyundai Kona EV : Ownership Review

Today's XUV4OO launch and the resultant discussion around the battery chemistry has popped this question in my head. A Google search indicated that Kona also uses NMC type cell but in a different proportion than the 4OO. Nexon and ZS are said to use an LFP composition cell. Does this mean that Nexon and ZS boasts superior tech compared to Kona, when it comes to battery composition ?

Well, I’m not technically proficient to answer this question. But, from a layman’s perspective I would say that they’re each having different advantages and disadvantages. NMC are more compact and help in reducing the space needed. LFP are larger, and hence need more space. NMC have lower charge cycles for retaining the full charge, LFP have longer cycles. NMC are costlier, compared to LFP. But, performance is better and also does better in colder conditions (not applicable to India). Key point to note, NMC are probably explored to the peak, whereas LFP are still being explored and newer tech might one day ensure they are having the same advantages as NMC (BYD’s blade batteries are an example).

But all of this is moot. It’s the BMS (battery management system) and how much reliably it gives the range that’s shown. On that front, I’ve no complaints against the Kona. Most important, the full charge is retained for 1000 cycles (as against 2500 for LFP). But, that means almost 250,000 - 300,000 Kms. Considering average usage of most people and the ever changing tech, we will definitely change cars much before we even reach half of that figure.

Re: Hyundai Kona EV : Ownership Review

Moderators I just realized that I’d never explicitly mentioned the location of the video in my earlier post. I wanted to clarify that this is in Hyderabad and not Bengaluru. Thank you for putting this on the home page. Apologies, if I should’ve been more explicit about the location. I assumed that my location will help.

Forum members who’ve visited the post, the location is in Alwal Hills, near Suchitra in Hyderabad.

As per my understanding, MG ZS ( including the facelift) and Nexon also use NMC batteries. The only EV which uses LFP in India is BYD E6 (Blade Battery).
I feel we cant say LFP is superior as such as the energy density is half of NMC. Though i would anyday prefer it over NMC in my EV due to the fact that it does not have the thermal runaway issue that NMC have.

.
The old 2020 MG ZS EV with 40kwh battery ( the 72kwh version also ) uses NMC.

The 50kwh MG ZS EV launched in 2022 has a LFP battery from shanghai advanced traction battery/SAIC.

Nexon EV uses LFP battery from Guoxaun china.

Do you mind providing the references for this ? When I checked the respective specs I could not find any specific details.
The only hint I got was that for the old Nexon Ev the charging time was specified for 10% - 80% while for Nexon Ev Max it was 0-100%.

The Nexon EV circular doesn't say anything about battery chemistry, but mentions Guoxuan as one source and their website only mentions LFP.

Ah that looks bad, glad there were no issues. I stay nearby and faced a similar adventure on one of the service roads as well, though it was with an ICE car.

Re: Hyundai Kona EV : Ownership Review

Recently did a 1440km road trip over 3 days in the Kona.

Route was:
Day 1 : Bangalore-Alathur(Kerala) - 485km
Day 2: Alathur-Kochi-Alathur - 220km
Day 3: Alathur-Pollachi-Dharapuram-Dindigul-Madurai-Bangalore - 720km

It was effortless thanks to the well-populated 50kW charging from Zeon available throughout.

Brief description of the trip:
Day 1: Started from Bangalore at 2pm with 80% SoC and reached Zeon Sankagiri near Salem at 6pm, covering 250km with 11% left. AC on throughout at 20C and cruise control fixed at 95kmph. Charged up to 80% and stopped at Tiruppur by 8pm for some time. Left Tiruppur by 10.30 reached my home at 1am in Alathur with 7% left. Plugged the car into my slow charger to charge overnight.

Day 2: Charged upto 80% overnight with my slow charger and did a quick trip to Kochi and back. Plugged in overnight for next day's trip back to Bangalore via Madurai.

Day 3: Left my place at 8am, reached Dindigul by 12.30 after a 30 min stop at Pollachi for lunch. Left Dindigul by 1pm, and reached Madurai by 1.45.
Started for our return journey to Bangalore by 4.30pm. Stopped at Zeon Temple City outside Madurai, around 5pm with 15% SoC left. 300km done by this point.

Charged up to 80%, and left by around 5.20pm for our next charge/break stop near Salem at A2B Rasipuram, around 200km away.
Reached by 8pm with 7% SoC left. We decided to have our dinner here, and since there was a heavy rush, it took a while to get a table. 490km covered at this point.

90% charge done by 9pm, and we left for Krishnagiri, with a plan to do a quick top of around 30% quick there before the uphill climb into Bangalore.
Reached Krishnagiri ~11.15pm. Since I wasn't driving very hard, had 40% SoC left & 70km to go, decided to carry on to Bangalore without charging up.

Reached Bangalore by 1am with 4% SoC to spare.
Total stats for the day :720km done in one day, with a drive time of 12 hours, including charging stops!
Average speed of 60km/h, and it felt like I could do another 200-300km easily. Overall trip was around 1440km.

Charging cost:
Zeon Sankagiri (Vaigundam) : Rs. 756
Zeon Madurai (Temple City) : Rs. 809
Zeon Rasipuram (Salem) : Rs. 842
Total DC charging cost for 1440 km: Rs. 2407

Not able to upload photos of the trip stats, the attachment window is throwing out an error.

Some of the remaining SoC you are mentioning are unnerving. A major jam could have left you stranded.
Won't the charging cost be higher if you consider the charging done at home prior and during the trip?

Re: Hyundai Kona EV : Ownership Review

Hello Everyone, I am getting a good discount on Hyundai Kona for the 2022 model. Would you recommend taking a kona instead of mg zs ev? I find kona a little dated and missing some important features like 360 camera , connected car technology..

Ask yourself whether discount is worth the slightly cramped interiors and a LIPO battery vs the much safer and longer lasting LFP battery in the ZS ev.
