Toyota's new battery electric SUV ready for production

Toyota announced today that it will preview a brand-new model for its battery electric vehicle line-up: a mid-size SUV based on the forthcoming e-TNGA platform.

At this stage, only a stylised silhouette and details of the platform architecture have been released.

Quote:
The as-yet-unnamed model will be similar in size to today’s RAV4, although as a dedicated BEV on a dedicated architecture it’s set to take a new name. Toyota says the SUV has been tailored specifically for the European market and will be built at its dedicated zero-emissions factory in Japan

The e-TNGA platform can also accommodate front, rear or all-wheel drive, with a wide range of battery and electric motor capacities to suit various vehicle types and usage profiles.

The first e-TNGA- based model has already been developed and is being readied for production. Manufacturing will take place at Toyota’s ZEV Factory in Japan.

Quote:
Toyota has previously said that other models planned for the e-TNGA platform will include a compact SUV that it’s developing with Suzuki, a crossover, a large SUV, a saloon and an MPV. Toyota is also investing in solid-state battery research and has said that it plans to launch a “mass-produced” BEV using this transformative technology “in the first half of the 2020s”.

Likely to come to India in collaboration with Suzuki in the Mid -SUV space.

Re: Toyota's new battery electric SUV ready for production

Just today morning saw Kirk's video about Toyota's BEV plans in the USA, and here we have news closer to home.

Confused on the Indian prospect.
Is it the next gen Vitara?
Or the Creta rival being planned can also be electrified?
Or does this platform entail only pure BEVs.?
Or is it an all new BEV compact SUV being developed with Suzuki that may not see Indian soil?

Anyways kudos to Toyota to spreading themselves and having all options.
Letting the markets decide for themselves, instead of shoving down the throat BEV only slogan

Re: Toyota's new battery electric SUV ready for production

Again, like I’ve commented on a previous thread about Toyota-Suzuki partnership, in India it is only the brand Toyota which is getting its bread and butter from rebadged models while the buyer is getting pretty much no benefit whereas the European partnership seems to be exciting for both the brand and the buyer with new cars, new development and both brands continuously expanding their portfolio.

Over here, Toyota is still stuck with the same old boring stuff. Waiting for them to launch atleast one international model or about any good model for that matter, pricing it right and getting its place back in the market not by rebadging but with their own Innova-tion(couldn’t resist the pun!).

Speculated Patent images of the first mid-range SUV from Toyota and its partners:

Quote:
Based on the patent drawings, we expect a compact crossover, a compact hatchback, a kind of mini MPV, a mid-size sedan / fastback and a large SUV (Highlander format). Probably there will be Subaru, Suzuki and Daihatsu versions of this in some markets.

Re: Toyota's new battery electric SUV ready for production

One thing I don't understand is why all manufacturers try to emulate Tesla's design philosophy when it comes to designing an electric vehicle. Personally I detest the looks of Tesla Cybertruck. These prototype images show like it's another variant of Tesla. Why can't they design an electric vehicle more in line with current design language, something like Mercedes EQC, and not something like a future spacecraft.

New Toyota ‘BZ’ to be brand's first all-electric car.

Quote:
Toyota has spent much of the past few months registering trademarks based on ‘BZ series’ - everything from BZ1 to BZ5. These are for its new family of standalone electric models and that the BZ references ‘Beyond Zero’, the title of Toyota’s public push towards zero-emissions motoring.

Re: Toyota's new battery electric SUV ready for production

Toyota set to roll out its revolutionary solid-state battery in 2021.

Its “game-changing” solid-state battery will be unveiled in a prototype in 2021.

What is this all about?

Its newly developed batteries can also enable a maximum EV range of 500km in one full charge and a zero to 100% charging time of just 10 minutes, “all with minimal safety concerns.

Quote:
this is achieved without legroom being compromised to accommodate a larger battery pack.
Quote:
will be a game-changer not just for electric vehicles, but for an entire industry.

Re: Toyota's new battery electric SUV ready for production

I haven't had hopes on toyota since they went gungho about fuel cell and refused to acknowledge BEV. I am not so keen on Toyota India as it looks like they have only one ACE in their pocket and are milking it like anything.
However, if they do come out with SSB, then it is definitely a game changer for sure, and I will eat my hat and go for one

More than double the range, charging in ~ 10 min without sacrificing interior space, lowers the fire risks with energy density indicating battery capacity is also several times larger than the conventional Li-ion battery.

Re: Toyota's new battery electric SUV ready for production

Looks pretty good with a typical Japanese design aesthetic and I am glad its a bespoke electric vehicle architecture and not an electric car built on ICE platform with massive compromises such as the Mercedes EQA. Infact I want to meet the product planners at Mercedes who thought EQA was good enough. Its a horrendous effort, a short cut from one of the biggest automobile brands in the world.
