Toyota to reveal concept for first production EV in April.

RAV4-sized EV will be first of six models to use new platform co-developed with Subaru.

A Toyota concept at next month's Shanghai motor show will preview an upcoming electric SUV, kick-starting what will be a fast-expanding range of electric vehicles.

The as-yet-unnamed model will be similar in size to today’s RAV4, although as a dedicated BEV on a dedicated architecture it’s set to take a new name. Toyota says the SUV has been tailored specifically for the European market and will be built at its dedicated zero-emissions factory in Japan

The SUV will be the first of six BEVs planned to use the new e-TNGA platform that Toyota has co-developed with Subaru

Toyota has previously said that other models planned for the e-TNGA platform will include a compact SUV that it’s developing with Suzuki, a crossover, a large SUV, a saloon and an MPV. Toyota is also investing in solid-state battery research and has said that it plans to launch a “mass-produced” BEV using this transformative technology “in the first half of the 2020s”.

New electric Toyota BZ badge revealed in patent drawing.

Toyota has registered a trademark for its ‘BZ’ branding, ahead of electric SUV’s launch later this month.



The Japanese company’s new BZ is a mid-sized rival for the Volkswagen ID.4 and Kia e-Niro electric SUVs and is set to be unveiled at this year’s Shanghai Motor Show.

The BZ initials reference “Beyond Zero,” which is the title of the firm’s public push towards zero-emissions motoring.

Some of the trademarks registered by Toyota - including BZ4X and BZ5X - indicate a four-wheel drive vehicle. The numbers are expected to reference the vehicle size, with “1” being reserved for the smallest crossover and “5” for the largest SUV.

Toyota Motor Corporation held a "Battery / Carbon Neutral Briefing Session" to explain Toyota's battery strategy toward carbon neutrality up to 2030. Among them, e introduced that the world's first all-solid-state battery-equipped vehicle acquired a number and started a test run, and revealed that all-solid-state batteries will be introduced from hybrid vehicles considering the characteristics.

Toyota turns to Chinese tech to reach its electric holy grail.

the breakthrough was chiefly down to BYD's less bulky lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) Blade batteries and its lower-cost engineering know-how - a turning of the tables for a Chinese company whose popular F3 saloon was inspired by Toyota's Corolla back in 2005.

Idemitsu and Toyota collaborate to manufacture solid-state batteries for EVs.

Idemitsu Kosan Co and Toyota join forces to develop mass production technology of solid electrolytes, improve productivity and establish a supply chain; target mass production of all-solid-state batteries for BEVs in 2027-28.

Through this collaboration, the two companies, which lead the world* in the fields including material development relating to all-solid-state batteries, seek to ensure the successful commercialization of all-solid-state batteries in 2027-28, followed by full-scale mass production.

While Idemitsu has been working on research and development on elemental technologies for all-solid-state batteries since 2001, Toyota started in 2006.

Through combination of both companies' material development technologies, Idemitsu's material manufacture technologies and Toyota's battery processing and assembly technologies which is obtained through BEV development, both companies will aim to realize mass production of both solid electrolytes and all-solid-state batteries suitable for global widespread use. Both companies, working together across industries, will contribute to global carbon neutrality, and will lead the future with technologies created in Japan

Toyota to exhibit at the Japan Mobility Show 2023, "next-generation battery performance version (prismatic)" that achieves a cruising range of 1000km with BEV.

This next-generation battery performance version will be an improved version of the lithium-ion battery equipped with the bZ4X battery EV currently on sale, and will be used in Lexus' next-generation battery EV concept model lineup, which will be unveiled at the Japan Mobility Show 2023.

Toyota previews expanded dedicated BEV line-up and advanced battery technologies.

- Expansion of dedicated BEV line-up with the presentation of the Urban SUV and Sport Crossover concepts scheduled for introduction in the next two years.

Next generation batteries beyond 2026

The next-generation technologies Toyota is developing for post-2026 will change the way vehicles are developed, made and used. It will ensure that zero-emission mobility is affordable and accessible, true to its commitment to delivering sustainable mobility for all, with no one left behind.

It is preparing to introduce a series of new batteries, the first of which will be a performance version, designed with a conventional structure but expected to offer twice the driving range and a 20% cost reduction compared to the current bZ4X.

This will be followed by a good quality, low-cost battery that will help popularise BEVs. It will have new shape, a bipolar structure and use cheaper lithium iron phosphate (LFP) as its principal material. The aim is for this to increase range by 20% and reduce cost by 40% (vs bZ4X).

The third battery to be introduced will focus on high performance, using bipolar technologies and a high nickel cathode. Even lower costs and a further extended driving range are expected.

Turning to the prospect of Toyota’s first solid state batteries, Andrea Carlucci said: “We have made a technological breakthrough that overcomes the long-standing challenge of solid state battery durability. A method for mass production is currently being developed and we are striving for commercialisation in 2027-2028 with production capacity of several tens of thousands of vehicles.”

From the start, Toyota is looking to achieve a charge time from 10 to 80% of just 10 minutes.

Other technologies are also being developed for next-generation BEV production, engineering and design. The Kenshiki forum hosted the first European presentation of the Toyota FT-3e concept, a tech-study that embraces the full range of future technologies, minimising weight, maximising aerodynamic performance and controlling costs. The FT-3e looks at how in the future cars might offer more than mobility by connecting with society and enabling the transfer of energy and data.

Toyota the Latest Auto Giant to Announce Solid-State EV Batteries.

The number of lithium-ion battery-based fires is growing with enormous frequency worldwide. In Toronto, the number of lithium-ion battery fires has nearly doubled in 2023, according to Toronto Fire Services. Typically, an EV fire burns at roughly 5,000 degrees Fahrenheit (2,760 Celsius), while a gasoline-powered vehicle on fire burns at 1,500 F (815 C). It takes about 2,000 gallons of water to extinguish a burning gasoline-powered vehicle; putting out an EV fire can take 10 times more.

Toyota says its breakthrough batteries will hit the market in 2027 or 2028, giving its EVs 745 miles/1,200 kms) of range—greater than any gas-powered car today—with 10-minute charging times. Toyota's longer-view plans include vehicles with a 932-mile/1500 km range and charging times of less than 10 minutes. In comparison, the best-selling EV today, the Tesla Model Y, has a maximum 330-mile range and 15-minute charging via Tesla Supercharger.
