According to a media report Hyundai is developing a mass market electric vehicle (EV) for India.

Seon Seob Kim, MD & CEO, Hyundai Motor India has stated that the company does not expect demand for niche segment EVs to pick up. However, mass-market EVs could gain traction in India.

He added that the R&D team is working on the most suitable body type based on the needs of Indian customers. The report suggests that it is likely to be an SUV.

At present, Hyundai offers the Kona Electric in India. It is priced at Rs. 23.76 lakh (ex-showroom). The car uses a 39.2 kWh battery that powers an electric motor that has an output of 134 BHP and 395 Nm of torque. It has an ARAI certified range of 452 km on a single charge.

Expecting Venue based electric SUV, as creta would be bigger than Kona.

Hope they keep design as close to ICE as possible.

re: Hyundai plans to develop EVs for the Indian market

Hyundai's Kona was a pioneer - the first proper EV in India (& not a half-baked one). However, they went radio silent on the EV front after that.

EVs are conspicuous with their green number plates, and I believe I'm spotting an EV more often on the road these days. Without a doubt, EVs are gaining acceptance steadily.

To cash in on this trend (which is all set to explode in the next couple of years), Hyundai needs to bring in more affordable EVs, in the 7.5 to 15 lac price range.

Heck, they can even do a conversion on an existing ICE platform in India, no need to build a new EV-specific platform that will take a lot of time. The Nios and Venue are good base ICE cars for conversion to EVs.

Give the Nios an 80-90 PS electric motor, a 300 km ARAI-certified range and launch three variants between 8.5 and 10 lac rupees. Plonk in a 110-120 PS electric motor into the Venue, give it a 400 km ARAI-certified range and price it from 11.5 to 14 lacs. Such EVs can gain them marketshare in the electric space till cars based on a dedicated EV platform are rolled out.

Re: Hyundai plans to develop EVs for the Indian market

Hyundai Motor India plans to launch 4 EV models in future, electric version of Creta by Q4 FY25.

- intends to focus on securing local production capabilities for key parts, such as cells, battery packs, power electronics, and drivetrain and building a localised EV supply chain.

- seeks to calibrate its EV strategy and plan EV timelines in line with market demands in India by launching the appropriate EV models within each price segment.

- Creta EV in the last quarter of fiscal 2025

-Company is also exploring different avenues for a strategic collaboration for the production of batteries.

-Aim to develop the EV infrastructure in India by constructing charging stations.

- Still concerns about meeting the eligibility criteria and availing of the benefits under the localisation norms.
