BMW iX all-electric SUV with 600 km range unveiled

BMW has revealed a new all-electric SUV called the iX. It is scheduled to go into production next year.

The BMW iX is based on an all-new aluminium spaceframe and is about the same size as the BMW X5. The design of the car is unlike anything we've seen before from BMW, except for the large twin kidney grille that debuted on the new M3 and M4. The conventional twin headlamps have been replaced with slim LED units. Similarly, it has a unique rear fascia with slim LED tail lights.

The futuristic styling continues on the inside. The interior is wrapped in blue and black upholstery. The minimalistic dashboard features a wide dual-screen setup similar to what to get in modern Mercedes models. It houses a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.9-inch touchscreen infotainment. The iX gets a unique hexagonal steering wheel.

The BMW iX is powered the fifth generation all-electric platform. It uses two electric motors that have a combined output of 503 BHP. BMW claims that the SUV can do 0-100 km/h in 5 seconds. The battery pack is said to offer a maximum range of 600 km on a single charge (WLTP cycle). It can be recharged from 10% to 80% in 40 minutes using a 200 kW fast charger. Users can top up the range by 120 km within 10 minutes using a fast charger.

The BMW iX will enter production sometime in 2021. It will be built at BMW's Dingolfing plant in Germany.

I don't wish to see something even 10% looking like that on roads around me. What a horror sight. What is happening to BMW designs. This grille is sure not to grow on me unlike the new x6 and 7 series.

What a terrifying sight. I wouldn't want this thing anywhere near my rear view mirrors. Could be used to scare away children during Halloween.

Per-se there is no such word in Malayalam. This word was coined in some movie which became a common word. Basically meaning "having an affair which nobody else knows" or something of that sort. The problem/advantage of Malayalam language is that there are lots of subtle meaning for the same word which depends on the usage, placement in a sentence etc.

Great performance and range numbers. BMW ix3 that's launched recently has great efficiency. So, this iX will also have similar efficiency numbers if not better.

The looks are definitely radical and polarizing. However there must be something psychological behind this move because everyone is slowing getting on it. From Hyundai to BMW they seem to be implementing this new design language in their own distinctive format.

Maybe it is just to stand apart from the crowd ! Maybe couple of years down the line, everyone might get used to it.

One of the most horrible looking BMW. Outside as well as inside. God only knows what's wrong with the car designers. Looking at steering wheel, future models will get a hexagonal steering wheel, than a round one.

I don't know what they're smoking over at BMW, but that is just horrendous to look at. I can't see a single good angle on this thing, and let's not even get started with the steering wheel. Just why?

At this point, Tesla has well and truly won the space, and I don't foresee cars like the iX (How is it pronounced? i10? Eeks? Maybe the latter) making a dent in the model X or anything else in Tesla's portfolio. Electric cars can be made attractive, sensible, and futuristic without going over the top. If the Tesla's aren't proof enough, just look at Jaguar's I-Pace. C'mon BMW, you can do much better than this...thing.

Looks like the eager Beavers in Beavaria have turned to nature for inspiration. Unfortunately, I don't see why someone would grin and bear this.

What is it with car interiors looking like wannabe jet cockpits nowadays? (The cherry on top of this disgusting cake is the other trend that's the two spoke steering wheel.)

This is probably the worst design from BMW in recent times!

Front grille is as horrible as expected, but what is with the rear design? Looks like an MG Hector Plus.

Interior design and colours are also the worst ever I have seen in a German brand.

Well, the interiors look different from what they give on the others, so may look better to regular customers. As I mentioned somewhere previously, a larger SUV will be a better place to put these horrendous grills over a sports sedan. Let's see what happens in following Years.

But this vehicle looks promising to me. It appears they have given a free hand to their electric team, and they have tried to build something from scratch unlike MB which plonked electric motors and batteries on GL and launched as EQ.

Thanks for your images, what's the source?

I absolutely love the new design language of BMW. I don't see see what is so wrong with the new design language as its different, distinct and has a character to add. The new big grill shows the the massive and dominant presence on road.
This will be accepted as new norm from BMW in couple of years.
