Volkswagen's Electric ID.4 Models Launch in China:

Volkswagen launched the ID.4 CROZZ and ID.X models for the China market. The fully-electric ID.4 CROZZ is being manufactured by Volkswagen's joint venture with China's FAW Group, while the ID.4 X is being built by SAIC Volkswagen, a separate joint venture with Chinese automaker SAIC Motor.

the electric ID.4 crossover is being marketed as more of a mainstream EV with roughly the same performance of a similar gas-powered compact SUV.

The ID.4 is powered by a 83 kWh lithium-ion battery pack mated to a single electric motor that sits between the rear axle. The electric powertrain produces a maximum output of 203 horsepower and 229 lb-ft of peak torque. Accelerating from 0 to 60 MPH takes 8.5 seconds. A more powerful dual-motor version is expected to be offered sometime next year.

The ID.4 models will have driving ranges of over 400 kilometers (248 miles) and offer over-the-air software updates, Volkswagen executives said at the event.

The ID.4 is being built on the automaker's Modular Electric Drive (MEB) electric vehicle architecture, which also underpins the smaller ID.3 hatchback and Enyaq crossover from VW's Skoda brand.

VW ID.4 is now officially on sale in Britain, with a starting price of £37,800. First Edition cars arrive in the UK in March.

The First Edition has a 77kWh battery for a claimed 310-mile range and can charge at a maximum rate of 125kW. That means if you find a powerful-enough charger the ID.4 can take-on almost 200 miles worth of juice in just 30 minutes. 0-62mph takes 8.5 seconds and the top speed is 99mph thanks to a single, rear-mounted e-motor making 201bhp.

Normal ID.4s arrive later in the year – they’ll be offered with different-sized batteries and twin-motors for all-wheel drive.

Closer to home, Volkswagen India is set to launch the ID 4 SUV in 2022 with a sole 204hp, 310Nm, RWD powertrain, though an AWD version is set to follow. It is the brand’s second model to be built on the MEB platform and is positioned between the Tiguan and Tiguan Allspace in terms of size.

Interestingly, the ID.4 is in "Small Off-road" class as per Euro NCAP and the Skoda Enyaq is in "Large Off-road" class. I'm not sure why, as these are practically the same car with very similar dimensions. I also wonder if this has some effect on the ratings.

I think the ID.4 is a very competent car, if not very fast by EV standards. However, its Achilles heel is interior quality. One cannot escape the feeling that the interior has been built to a cost. Particularly, the materials on the dashboard and doors. My Karoq's dashboard and door materials look and feel better. In the ID.4, the areas one would come in contact with more often are actually of decent quality, but the materials even manage to look cheaper and also feel inferior than in the Karoq.

While it seems to be a competent car when it comes to the drivetrain, some of the design decisions are just plain bizarre. It, for example, does not have separate rear power window buttons on the drivers armrest. Instead, there are 2 buttons for the left and right windows and another one to switch between the front and rear. Why? So they could save 1 button under the name of 'minimalism' in a 40k Euro car? The insides seem to be much cheaper built than the lower priced Golf.
