Just like the VW ID3, Volkswagen's new electric car is based on the MEB platform and will come with multiple engine options of 148, 170, 175 and 204 hp, as well as rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive. There are two types of batteries - for 52 and 77 kWh, which will provide a cruising range of up to 500 km. Subsequently, two versions with all-wheel drive with power return of 265 and 306 hp, and 77 kWh batteries will enter the market.

The drag coefficient is 0.26, making the model one of the most aerodynamic in the SUVs segment. The interior is very comfortable, with raised benches and flat floor.

Rear passengers can also feel comfortable as there is ample legroom, despite the fact that the electric car has received a very spacious trunk. Standard equipment includes a 5.3-inch screen digital instrument panel and a multimedia system with 10-inch display. However, for the tests, journalists received one of the top-of-the-line versions, which is equipped with a 12-inch screen with augmented reality.

The turning radius is 10.2 m, so the "maneuverability is excellent". Experts also noted the responsiveness of the steering and multi-link suspension, which was able to provide optimal driving even on a dirt road. And that's despite the prototype being equipped with low-profile tires

“Light is the new chrome”: Light design of the new Volkswagen ID.4.

Light plays a major role, especially for an electric vehicle. It represents energy and electricity, but also warmth and safety. Light is a perfect symbol for the mobility of the future.

Large headlights dominate the front end of the electric SUV to lend it a friendly look. They already largely feature LED technology as standard. The tail light clusters have been fully equipped with light-emitting diodes and a red light strip connects them to each other. The exterior mirror housings feature an additional light element: they conceal logo projectors which project a diamond-shaped pattern, ID. models’ typical design motif, onto the ground upon opening the doors.

Global innovation: optional 3D LED tail light clusters. In the ID.4 the Volkswagen brandis using 3D LED tail light clusters for the very first time. Their tail light forms a flat curve and has a particularly homogeneous and vivid effect. In each case nine fibre optic cable surfaces emit the light in an unusually rich red. Each of these discs, consisting of several, thin layers, appears to be floating in front of a black background. The brake lights light up in the shape of an “X”.

The world premiere of the ID.4, which will in future be available in the booming compact SUV segment, will be today.

The first vehicles will be delivered before the end of this year.

Volkswagen's ID.4 Launched, rivals Tesla's Model Y: (US)

2021 VW ID.4 EV Offers 250 Mile-Range, 201HP RWD Powertrain For $39,995.

Based on the group’s MEB platform, two battery sizes have been confirmed for the ID.4: a 52kWh unit and a larger 77kWh battery. However, from launch, only models using the larger battery pack will be offered, with the cheaper 52kWh models available later in 2021.

Entry-level ID.4s with the smaller battery pack are claimed to be able to cover a maximum range of 224 miles on a single charge. Drive is provided by an electric motor, available with 146bhp or 168bhp, that powers the rear wheels.

Versions with the larger 77kWh battery are capable of unlocking a range of 323 miles on a single charge. A 201bhp electric motor powers the rear axle, capable of propelling the car from 0-62mph in 8.5 seconds and on to a limited top speed of 99mph.

VW will also offer this model with a less powerful 177bhp motor, while the brand has also confirmed that a range topping all-wheel drive version is coming too.

As for charging, three levels are anticipated. While unconfirmed, it’s likely that the entry-level 52kWh ID.4 will default to a 50kW standard, which would enable a 0-80 per cent recharge in around an hour. However, 100kW charging has been confirmed, which would double that baseline speed, but is likely to be an optional extra. Versions with the 77kWh battery, however, will be made available with 125kW charging, capable of adding 199 miles of range in half an hour.

The 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 arrives in the first quarter of next year. Its starting price of $39,995 represents the base rear-drive model, boasting piano black interior accents, black cloth seats, 19-inch wheels, a body-color roof, and roof rails. The $4,500 Statement package adds a few niceties (fixed-glass roof, gray or black leatherette, adaptive front lighting, power-folding side mirrors, and the aforementioned 12.0-inch infotainment screen and illuminated rear badges). At the top of the heap is the $1,500 Gradient package, offered only in conjunction with Statement and adding 20-inch wheels, a black roof, and silver exterior accents.

Pricing for the all-wheel-drive, 302-hp ID.4 starts at $43,695, and that model will go on sale before mid-2021. It, like all other ID.4 variants, will qualify for a $7,500 federal tax credit, bringing the model line’s base price down to $32,495 for rear-drive or $36,195 with all-wheel drive. VW points out that’s roughly in line with the Tiguan SEL and Tiguan SEL 4Motion.

Reservations for the ID.4 open up today, costing a fully refundable fee of $100 for the honor of being among the first to buy into Volkswagen’s EV future. The 2021 ID.4 will be sold in all 50 states through a network of 600 dealers nationwide.

EUROPE:: undercuts Tesla's Model Y in pricing.

In Germany, the ID4 launch edition, called the ID4 1st, will start at 49,950 euros ($58,896) excluding subsidies. The Model Y starts at 58,620 euros.VW will limit production of the launch edition to 27,000 units.

The ID4 starts the global rollout of cars built on VW Group's mass-market MEB electric platform. It follows the ID3 compact hatchback, which is currently being launched in Europe.

Unlike the Europe-focused ID3, the ID4 will be a global model, with the U.S. and China as key markets.
The ID4's launch is even more essential to the success of VW's electric-car push because it targets the hot crossover segment.

Volkswagen last month began production of the ID4 in Zwickau, Germany, where the ID3 is built. ID4 production will start this year at VW's Anting and Foshan plants in China. U.S. production in Chattanooga, Tennessee, is slated for 2022.

Volkswagen to bring ID.4 to India:


The Volkswagen ID4 will be brought to India via the CBU (completely built-up unit) route, leveraging the government’s homologation-free rule for 2,500 import units.

To avoid pricing the model out of the segment owing to the punitive duty structure, VW will likely bring in the electric SUV in the entry-level RWD form.

Consequently, expect prices to be in the range of Rs 60 lakh (estimated, ex-showroom) when the ID4 is launched in India around 2022

The Volkswagen ID.4 will debut in our market after the launch of the Porsche Taycan and Audi e-tron.

With all three models introduced, the VW Group is aiming to build a charging infrastructure that can be leveraged by all group companies in the country.

This underscores how far ahead Tesla is when it comes to electric vehicles. It neither has the range, nor the performance of Model Y and is barely any cheaper. The headline barely makes any sense - its like saying a 2.0 litre C-Class turbo diesel undercutting the BMW M3 and the M3 in question is even more fuel efficient. I'd say Sherlock.

Tesla is not selling Model Y in Europe, assigning a price to it and comparing it to VW ID 4 price is not correct. Tesla Model Y sales in Europe will start after production from Giga Berlin.

VW ID4 at $40K with 82kwh before incentives and approximately $30K after incentives is a steal, they can sell like hot cakes in US.

The new ID.4 – Volkswagen starts presales of its first fully electric SUV in Europe, one day after its launch.

The comfortable ID.4 1ST comes with a price tag of €49,950 while the ID.4 1ST Max is available for €59,950.

All models fully qualify for environmental grants: in Germany the net grant amounts to €9,000 each. The limited-edition models are restricted to 27,000 units. Once they have sold out, they will be followed by the pre-configured models. They bundle the most in-demand equipment options as part of appealing packages.

An even more reasonably priced ID.4 entry-level model will be added to the product line at the beginning of 2021. At this point the ID.4 Pure will be available to order throughout Europe, offering a range of up to 340 kilometres (WLTP) at a price of under €37,000.

The ID.4 sprints from standstill to 100 km/h in 8.5 seconds while its top speed has been limited to 160 km/h. 210 mm of ground clearance and the large wheels underline the sporty and powerful character.

The ID.4 1ST Max includes almost the full range of available equipment: in addition to the scope of the ID.4 1ST it includes further features. Interactive IQ.LIGHT LED matrix headlights and 3D LED tail light clusters especially catch the eye on the exterior. 21-inch Narvik wheels sharpen the handling in conjunction with progressive steering and adaptive chassis control DCC.
