Did any one notice the front end wobble (22s onwards) of the Robot Steering video!

Given the penchant for TML to launch 'half baked' products, it's surprising to see they have postponed the launch of the Nexon EV, may be the product has too many rough edges even by 'TML standards'. )) Given the number of problems the Tigor EV faced it's a blessing that they didn't unleash it on the public but used the Govt as the 'guinea pig'.

The steering wobble is a test of how the car behaves with sudden inputs and changes, the front end wobbling is a result of this. This is a part of car testing.

If that would have been the case , I don't think Tata motors would have even released the video at all!

You took the timing from the video-playback which doesn't represent the actual acceleration/deceleration figures. That said, Tata should have taken enough care in producing properly informative videos to avoid misunderstandings.

re: Tata builds a Nexon EV. EDIT: Launched at ₹13.99 lakhs

Tata Nexon EV, key details surface.
  • Battery and power details: The Nexon EV, as reported earlier, will feature Tata’s Ziptron technology. Like nearly every electric vehicle currently available in the world, the e-SUV will have its battery mounted under the floor, which should help reduce the centre of gravity, thereby ensuring body roll is minimised compared to the standard petrol or diesel-powered Nexon. The Nexon EV will feature a 28.8kWh battery pack that powers a 95kW/254Nm motor – the power figure converts roughly to 129hp.
  • Range and charging info: Based on the Modified Indian Driving Cycle (MIDC), the Nexon EV will have a 300km range and come with fast-charging capability. Sources tell us that the all-electric SUV will be able to gain about 80 percent charge in one hour with a DC fast charger, though it will take around 8-9 hours with a standard AC charger to attain 100 percent. The e-SUV will also have a hill-assist function and an energy regeneration feature that will work while the vehicle is in coasting mode. Tata hopes to assure buyers of the EV’s reliability by offering an 8 year/1,60,000km warranty as standard.
  • Dimensions and ground clearance: The new EV SUV will be 3,995mm long, 1,811mm wide and 1,607mm high. While it will continue to feature the same 2,498mm wheelbase as the pre-facelift Nexon, the EV will sit slightly lower to the ground with a ground clearance figure of 209mm instead of the standard SUV’s 215mm. This is due to a unique suspension calibration for the EV. At the rear, the SUV will feature a semi-independent suspension with torsion beam setup.
  • Variants and features list: The Nexon EV will most-likely come in two variants. Higher variants will come with equipment like automatic full-LED headlamps with LED daytime running lamps, power folding wing mirrors, rain-sensing wipers, a power sunroof, push-button start with a smart key and a wearable key, a Harman-sourced infotainment system with a rear view camera and park assist feature, eight speakers and Tata’s ConnectNext connectivity suite with voice command and other app-based features. It will also feature automatic control and dual-tone exterior paint combinations.
  • The rivals: Considering Tata Nexon EV prices are expected to be in the Rs 15 lakh region, buyers looking for a relatively affordable all-electric car or SUV by the end of 2020 will almost be spoiled for choice – the Hyundai Kona Electric (Rs 23.72-23.90 lakh) will soon get a rival in the form of the MG ZS EV (Rs 22 lakh); Tata is working on the Altroz EV (which will share the Nexon EV’s Ziptron powertrain technology and be priced in the Rs 12 lakh region); and Mahindra’s got the eKUV, a direct rival to the Nexon EV in the form of the eXUV300 and the Ford Aspire-based electric sedan in the works. Meanwhile, Maruti Suzuki’s Futuro-E concept, which will preview a small EV SUV, will make its debut at the 2020 Auto Expo.

Can a 28.8kWh battery pack provide a range of 300 Kms in real world conditions? How does Tata manage that? Superior regen?

I highly doubt it, i was looking forward to this but looks like it is better to have low expectations for the launch and not be disappointed completely. Kona with 39.2kwh gives around 340km while not flooring it, so 70% of kona's battery capacity should yield 240km range with that type of efficiency.

I thought the same. The Kona has a range of 340 kms and the ZS EV, despite its slightly bigger battery, has the same range too ( mainly because it's regen isn't as good as the Kona). The Nexon EV has a much smaller battery and I realistically don't see it touching a range of 300+.

Hopefully reviews will be able to test and come up with 'real world' figures. If Tata has done something magical and achieved the quoted range, kudos to them. Otherwise, I expected actual figures to be outed as post the initial batch of customers, disappointment due to actual range vs claimed would lead to slower sales, something that Tata can't afford.

It'll be priced cheaper, will have a smaller battery and a 230-250 kms range is pretty decent. Conditioning the market to expect more and falling short on delivering the same usually has negative connotations.

The interiors of the Tata Nexon EV have been leaked ahead of its debut that is scheduled to take place on 19 December. The spy image reveals the rotary knob for the transmission, unlike the gear lever seen on the conventional ICE powered model.

The Tata Nexon EV will come with a rotary knob for the transmission, with modes including R, N, D and S denoting Reverse, Neutral, Drive and Sport respectively. Another highlight of the interior is the cruise control button on the steering wheel, a feature which is not currently available on the ICE powered variants of the Nexon. Also on offer will be a flat-bottom steering wheel.

It can't. Real world range will be 200 KMs or less. Still a decent range.

The closest comparison on battery capacity is Hyundai Ioniq which has 30.5 kWh battery out of which 28 kWh is usable. Ioniq has EPA range of ~200 kms (124 miles) which is close to real world range. It will be interesting to see if the 28.8 kWh capacity on Nexon EV is the usable capacity or total capacity.

re: Tata builds a Nexon EV. EDIT: Launched at ₹13.99 lakhs

I don't know what manufacturers are gaining by overstating range by so much. Its much better off to under promise and over deliver especially at this point when delivery is limited by supply and not demand.

Battery prices have come down at least by 80% from 2010 and still the battery is only 16% bigger than a 2010 Leaf?

I guess its still better than Mahindra Electric who's current contribution to electrification is just talk.

Overstating? If it's an ARAI certified figure, then ARAI and its testing methods are to be blamed but not the manufacturers. Manufacturers always look for opportunities to present the best possible figures. We need more stringent methods of testing from the respective authorities. And also we need stringent safety regulations otherwise manufacturers easily getaway by stating the common statement "we made all our cars as per government set standards/norms". (Though made in the same plants, other countries are getting better built cars because their standards are high set!)

Is it not the same case with Hyundai's Kona whose 39.2 kWh battery's range according to WLTP is 289 km while according to ARAI it is 452km?

Here's an excerpt from an interview with YS Kim (R&D Division, Hyundai Motor Group):
Quote:
The Kona EV (39.2 kWh), according to the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP), has a certified range of 289km, but Hyundai India is claiming 452km. Why is there such a huge difference?

First, the 452km range has been certified by the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI). Secondly, the WLTP, I think, is a far more rigorous test, and done in a different environment. But I do believe that the actual range the customers in India will get will be close to 452km, depending, of course, on their driving style.
See how easy it is for the manufacturers to get away if we don't have rigorous testing methods.

Though, didn't check the Kona and EZS threads thoroughly, did anyone who is questioning here in this thread had questioned(similar questions) in those threads too?

re: Tata builds a Nexon EV. EDIT: Launched at ₹13.99 lakhs

Setting the right expectations is the most important thing especially in case of an EV. ARAI has very little at stake. TML has had to deal with very negative public perceptions about their products and service. They should not set expectations which will not be met in the real wold usage leading to bad publicity. The same has actually been the case with the EV Tigors supplied to govt departments. A range of 200-230 Km is pretty OK. However, if you set the expectations at 300 KM , you will only end up with disappointed customers and bad press.
