re: Tata builds a Nexon EV. EDIT: Launched at ₹13.99 lakhs

One of the problems that I face with the e20+ is that the ancillary battery used to start up doesn't get charged by the main battery pack. So you need to charge the vehicle over night every three days irrespective of power in the main batteries.

The Kona apparently doesn't have that problem as the main battery apparently charges the ancillary battery. This is hearsay from sales who claim no need to charge vehicle frequently if charge is there.

Does anyone have any idea of how NexonEV will handle this? Do we need charge every few days irrespective of usage?

For MG ZS, the ARAI figure is 360KMs, but MG claims a real world range of >300KMs.
The range claimed by Tata Motors for Nexon EV is not ARAI certified range, it is based on internal testing. So definitely the range will be >250KMs in real world conditions.

Also EVs require a different style of driving. It rewards a sedate driving style. If you drive carefully and anticipate stops and braking, the regen can add significantly to the range. Even in my E2O, I used to extend the range by using regen. This is with AC and normal driving style.
If you can get about 250Km range, it is plenty in most circumstances.

However, I am not that optimistic. My E2O has 10.5kwh battery and realistic mileage with AC on in cities is about 80km. Of course, it may have another 10km in reserve, but who pushes it that far?

That works out to about 8km/Kwh of battery.

I believe Nexon being heavier will give a bit less. So, assuming it is 7km/Kwh, and considering the battery capacity, I expect about 200km Range. Anything more will be a miracle.

Ofcourse, we may be able to push it a bit more (perhasp 10-15%) by switching of AC, and driving slow (50-60Kmph). But, may not be practical.

E2O uses 3 phase motors while the Nexon seems to use PMSM, so that would gain some efficiency, my kona gives more than 10km/kwh without AC in city.

And when tata says 30.2 KwH, does it mean the useable battery capacity or total one? If it is ueseable capacity, I would say having 7.5 km/kwh should be possible (India is nice and warm), which gives us the range of 255kms. I really dont see this car going any further on a single charge.

re: Tata builds a Nexon EV. EDIT: Launched at ₹13.99 lakhs

I'm seriously considering the Nexon EV, and will be exchanging my 13+ years old Santro Xing (~120K kms), believe the Nexon EV will fit my driving pattern:
* ~50 kms to & fro office commute with another 50 km avg during weekend)
* Seldom take long trips driving myself and anything I'm planning now will be within 200 kms.

I have no interest in bargaining to the last penny, and will be looking for an experience where SA feels good about working with me - it was very pleasant when I bought the Santro.

Intend to talk to 2 dealers in Chennai just to understand the new car and any problems they hear. As per GTO's advise will wait couple of months, till end-March for the new car to settle down with initial users.

I'm going to adapt this checklist already provided by experienced folks

https://www.team-bhp.com/advice/how-buy-new-car-india-0

https://www.team-bhp.com/advice/pre-...pdi-check-list

Anything EV specific to look out for, say from existing Kona users ?

Thank you all.

Tata has been teasing the car for quite long. While most of us are admittedly willing to give MNC car-makers (like Hyundai esp with Venue) a long rope with pre-release teasers feel Tata has been stretching this awhile.

Tata risks losing people's interest, any first-mover advantage and most importantly in my opinion people waiting for the second batch to be delivered with any kinks fixed in the first batch.

The Dec event missed lots more than it revealed, and the trained TaMo specialists aren't aware of release dates, and details more than what is available here.

Tata Nexon EV might launch on 28th Jan, 2020

Thanks to Ahad Hamza for sending this image in. Heartfelt gratitude for sharing it with other enthusiasts via this Team-BHP page!

According to an SMS notification sent out by a Tata dealer, the Nexon EV might be launched on January 28, 2020.

Tata builds a Nexon EV. EDIT: Launched at ₹13.99 lakhs-screenshot_20200113152724_messages.jpg

Bookings for the Nexon EV officially opened on December 20, 2019. The car is expected to be priced between Rs. 15-17 lakh.

The Nexon EV will be offered in three variants - XM, XZ+ and XZ+ LUX. It will get features such as twin-pod auto headlamps with LED daytime running lights, fog lamps, 16-inch diamond cut alloy wheels, 7-inch touchscreen infotainment head-unit with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, rear camera, sunroof and rain sensing wipers.

The Nexon EV uses a 30.2 kWh lithium-ion battery that powers an electric motor which has an output of 127 BHP and 245 Nm. The company claims that the car can do a 0-100 km/h sprint in 9.9 seconds. The battery will offer a maximum range of over 300 km on a single charge (MIDC cycle). It has fast charging capability and can be recharged to 80% of its capacity using a DC fast charger in 1 hour. Using a standard AC charger, it takes 8-9 hours to recharge to 100%.

That said, it coming from the house of Tata Motors, it can be assumed that it's a car with strong build.

Note: Don't pull Tata Motors into this as it is a dealer communication and Tata cannot audit every communication made by the dealer. Dealer level communications are prone to errors.

The SMS is factually wrong because Hyundai kona EV is already out and has a 5 star Euro NCAP rating.

A 0-100 time of 9.9 seconds seems great especially when one sees how EVs have a way greater acceleration at the low end which tapers off later.
I wish they also start giving a 0-80 acceleration figure.

But if it takes 1 hour for 0-80% charge, does it only support 25kW DC fast charging?

Did think of this. I have booked already to get on queue, but I am concerned about a few things, and if not entirely convinced on those may not buy.

My experience with Tata Indica 2000 (their first petrol version in year 2000) left me with a bad taste. I was one of the first to buy, but had so many problems I sold it within 3 yrs at 25% of the price paid (petrol version didn't have demand).

I am betting on two things:

1. Tata would have become more mature in passenger car market too. I don't hear of friends owning Tata products having as many problems now a days.

2. Electric vehicles have very few parts, so chance of something going wrong is smaller.
