UK: Lamp-post charging points for electric cars

In London I saw an electric car (VW Golf GTE) charging from a lamp-post.

It seems one borough of London has retro-fitted lamp-posts to enable charging of electric cars.

See the ink:

Though the rates are high (by Indian standards) the concept is great.

This system could be linked to a phone, thus :

- You hook up your car at a charging point at a lamp-post
- Ring a number and get an OTP
- Key in the OTP into a keypad on the lamp-post
- Car starts getting charge for a selected period.
- Fees for parking and charging are billed to your phone account.

Could be a win-win for everyone : car owners, manufacturers, phone company, municipality...

This is pretty smart; it eliminates the need for designated EV-charging areas which can otherwise lock up space for non-EVs. Simultaneously, it removes the capacity constraint as you easily enable charging points on the already available charging points.

Best part,

The new agreement will see 50 SimpleSockets installed across the borough which will draw 100% renewable energy from the street lights to give electric vehicle drivers access to new on street charging facilities.

Good idea, but would this really work in India? In public places, cars might queue up just for charging, thus blocking traffic. The charging point will probably be in use by someone charging his mobile phone. And what about people hacking into the system. Not to speak of the shocked dogs that will be lying around.

Why bother with the mobile phone apps, the rates of electricity, the modifications to lampposts, and the billing? Learn from the multitude of e-rickshaws that have flooded Delhi's roads. Hook up to the overhead wires or the lamppost wiring, set up your own charging station free of cost, and run your EV at the government's (and taxpayer's) cost - because you are saving the world anyway!

This is probably not going to work in a country where people are willing to break laws for small financial gains, or even just for the heck of it.
