Mahindra partners with LG Chem to develop Lithium-ion battery

Mahindra & Mahindra has partnered with Korean battery manufacturer LG Chem to develop cells for Indian applications. The company will also supply nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) based lithium-ion batteries that have a higher energy density than standard lithium-ion cells.

LG Chem will also design lithium-ion battery modules for Mahindra Electric, which will be used to create battery packs that will power future Mahindra products. Moreover, the NMC based cells will be used in electric cars manufactured under Mahindra and Ssangyong brands.

With this partnership, Mahindra will be able to leverage the advanced battery technologies developed by LG Chem. Mahindra is also preparing to expand its operations in order to meet future demand and is setting up a battery module plant in India. The new facility will have an annual capacity of 5,00,000 units and is expected to come online in the last quarter of 2019-20.

The change is inevitable; and this is the era of collaboration (very similar to coalition governments) to ensure that the desired progress is made in shortest possible time.

Energy content stored per unit volume is one of the key challenges for EVs as it is far below the energy density of any of the fossil fuels. I am sure partnership with LG Chem will provide an edge to already committed M & M towards taking the next big leap in EV opportunities.

Even if large auto players may not consider M & M a change maker, they cannot deny that the company is flowing with the wind of change and is certainly ahead in the EV curve in India.

It is the right time when all automobile makers sit down and decide a standard battery pack size.
Something like the AA or AAA size or batteries we have for toys and other small electronic products.
This will ensure the batteries on all Indian cars can be changed at "filling stations", thus compensating for the range limitations of the battery tech.
This as far as I know has not yet been done in the world yet and rather than being the followers all the time, might just be a leader in this.
Also a system of money transferring can be chalked out as surely these batteries are way more expensive than your regular AAs.
