Re: Tesla pick-up truck plans confirmed EDIT: 'Cybertruck' unveiled!

So this “impossible to make”, “vapourware” has finally been launched. And it wont be a Elon Tesla event if there was no next level trolling. I wont spoil it, watch it yourself

https://x.com/Micro2Macr0/status/173...978826691?s=20

Bullet proof, 0-60 in 2.6 seconds, <11 second to quarter mile, 2500 pound payload capacity, 11000 pound towing, 340 mile range for the top of the line Cyberbeast. Some of the accessory videos are wild as well.

From someone who hated the Cybertruck, when it was first unveiled almost 4 years back, to the core, so much so that I was evaluating my investment in Tesla to being the thing that I want most right now, I have come along and i am pretty sure others would too. This thing is bonkers wild!

Re: Tesla pick-up truck plans confirmed EDIT: 'Cybertruck' unveiled!

I saw the Delivery event live.
There were definitely some Cringe moments.

Typical Elon stuff - his Idea of Improvisation always leaves a certain Goofy after effect.
Out of the blue he jumped on the truck bed and decided he'll deliver his off-script speech from there. The lights were not even on his face. Seemed like somebody's bachelor party speech in a Bar. They could not even fix it.
Then he went on to real out a few chest-thumping stats of how it is better than yada yada.

The most Cringe-worthy was his Armor Glass moment. Most of the Junta has pretty forgotten the mishap of Shattering the glass that wasn't supposed to shatter during the launch event several years ago. He made it a point to bring back Frank, the designer, to Hurls some balls at the Glass. Except, this time around, they hurled baseballs instead of Metal balls that were used previously. Nobody asked for this stunt. That's Elon.

And then, just like that, rolled out 10 customer trucks and called it a day.

No other details whatsoever.
No mention that the promised 40lk Cybertruck is gone in the wind and that the promised range of 500 miles was a broken promise.

I'm actually puzzled at how little chatter there is on the Social platforms especially when customer vehicles have rolled out and a few Influencers like MKBHD and Mat Watson have been given early access to the vehicle. Even the tear-down Specialist Sandy Munro was given a vehicle prior to the event.

That said, I did like the Genius mktg line - ''Faster than a 911 while towing a 911''.

Check this out.

However, this is a rip-off. It was originally done by Jason Camissa when he drag'd a Model X against a Alfa 4C while towing a Alfa 4C.

It was quite sudden as I was watching the reveal live. I was expecting much more details around the engineering the exoskeleton structure and the new tech like steer by wire or the fully 48v architecture that has never been done before in the industry including manufacturing and the the build of this thing. After watching Jason Camisa's video though, I probably know why. It was by design to keep the hype alive for longer as people look for more information on it and come across these videos. I myself did.

Re: Tesla pick-up truck plans confirmed EDIT: 'Cybertruck' unveiled!

Tesla will be ready to deliver the first 10 Cybertrucks to key customers who are none other than Tesla employees.

Tesla divides the Cybertruck into 3 sub models:

The Rear-Wheel Drive model, coming in 2025, starts at an estimated $60,990. It offers an estimated 250-mile range and a 6.5-second 0-60 time, and can tow 7,500 pounds.

The All-Wheel Drive dual-motor version starts at $79,990. Its specs are more impressive, with 350 miles of range, 600 horsepower, a 4.1-second 0-60 sprint and 11,000 pounds of towing. It comes in 2024.

Finally, the Cyberbeast also comes in 2024, with an estimated price tag of $99,990. With 845 horsepower, it will do 0-60 in 2.6 seconds on the way to a top speed of 130 miles per hour. Tesla estimates 320 miles for the Cyberbeast, and says it'll also tow 11,000 pounds.
Quote:
the most disappointing and, at the same time, intriguing detail was the Cybertruck's range. Tesla promised 250 miles, 300 miles, and 500 miles for the RWD, Dual-Motor, and Three-Motor variants, respectively, when it announced the Cybertruck in 2019. Many reservation holders reportedly canceled their reservations after Tesla announced the final specifications.
Quote:
Tesla mentions a Range Extender without offering any details on its website or during the presentation. Before jumping to conclusions, this is a battery range extender, not a combustion engine like those used by other range-extender hybrids, including the Ram 1500 Ramcharger. Using this additional battery, the Cybertruck AWD can reach 470 miles of range (+130 miles), while the Cyberbeast can go 440 miles (+120 miles).
This is an intriguing approach, although it's still unclear how the battery range extender might work. The scarce information we have indicates that it will be installed in the bed, taking about 45% of its capacity (based on people's perception or one-third, according to Elon Musk). If you also want a spare tire, there's no room left in the vault for anything else, considering that the Cybertruck doesn't come with a spare tire compartment.

Considering the added range, we can assume the range extender is also one-third of Cybertruck's battery pack, which means between 40 and 50 kWh, depending on the actual battery pack capacity. This explains why the piggyback battery costs a whopping $16,000, according to rumors based on the Tesla webpage's source code. It would be interesting to see who will pay this money for 130 miles of supplemental range.

Beyond these inconveniences, the battery range extender reveals what can be Tesla's biggest failure, affecting not only the Cybertruck but also the company's future plans. Tesla only needs this contraption to make up for the disappointing performance of the 4680 battery cells in the Cybertruck. Despite announcing the second generation of the cells, with 10% performance improvements, Tesla still can't make 4680 to match the best 2170 cells in energy density and charging performance.
Quote:
When it announced the Cybertruck's specifications in 2019, Tesla was a lot more bullish on the 4680 cell performance. We saw this in 2020 during Battery Day when it promised 16% more range when using the 4680 cells instead of the 2170 parts. Three years later, the cells are still inferior, and they probably deliver 10% less range instead of 16% more

Tesla released some of the technical details of the Cybertruck, which many reservation holders found utterly disappointing. However, omitted from Elon Musk's presentation, the range extender marks what could be Tesla's biggest failure: the 4680 cells are still nowhere near their promised potential.

Although it’s already four years in the making, the Cybertruck story doesn’t end with the handover of the first keys.

My mixed emotions on this thing: A host of sweet technological firsts wrapped in butt-ugly clothes made by a company headed by an eccentric human. If only Toyota could've made something like this, except we all know only a company headed by Musk would dare to do it.

Re: Tesla pick-up truck plans confirmed EDIT: 'Cybertruck' unveiled!

I had penned down the following thoughts some weeks back, thought it would be appropriate for this thread.

Some random musings...

Tesla's cybertruck, in my opinion, is a perfect example of how a completely out of the box, left field idea (design in this case), is scoffed at in the beginning but gradually gains acceptance and, over time, is celebrated.

When it was unveiled in 2019, I cannot remember anyone taking it seriously. It was almost a joke, a car design by a 5 year old who only had a ruler to work it ("how come the wheels are round", they sneered). And to make things worse, Elon Musk's demonstration of the car's unbreakable glass went horribly wrong. Personally I was firmly in the "This is one of Elon Musk's weird sense of humour cars" camp. Surely the company wasn't serious.

Cut to now however, when the social media bots threw in an advert for a to-scale replica of the cybertruck, I took the bait almost instantly. It was not exactly cheap so I did feel silly buying it online on some obscure site. But when it was delivered, I could not take my eyes off it. The design might be childish but boy did it bring a smile to my face. And that's where I think the design is genius, while being mechanically sound, it really appeals to the inner child in me. I am fairly convinced that if I could buy it in the future, there is a very big probability that I would.

And incredibly it's not just me, a recent survey amongst existing Tesla owners revealed that 90% of them would never go back to a gasoline car and 75% of them would like to go for a cybertruck. This vehicle seems to have fired up a lot of interest if the media is to be believed.

So here is the rub, innovation is not exactly easy to accept at the beginning. It is genuinely difficult to move away, or even look away, from the status quo. It is much easier to be a cynic and write off the innovation than give it the benefit of doubt and think of how it could be used. Personally I have been guilty of doing this for almost every innovative idea/product I have come across in my adult life, social media, online shopping, smartphones, automations, AI, digital assets, NFTs, metaverse, streaming services, online gaming, Tesla cybertruck, infact Tesla itself, spacex reusable rockets... the list goes on. And in every instance I have been proven wrong. All of these have proven to have either changed the world or are in the process of doing so.

So now, I believe that in today's rapidly changing world, the least one could do is to remain humble and fallible, however wacky the idea/view it may sound at outset. Who knows where it may lead to eventually!!

And Tesla Cybertruck, I believe, is one of those wacky ideas which would materially impact automotive design and manufacturing in the future.

Re: Tesla pick-up truck plans confirmed EDIT: 'Cybertruck' unveiled!

I completely agree with Hagerty - The real difference between the CT and everything else - is really on the inside.

The fact that CT comes with a 48V low voltage architecture and steer by wire is by far the biggest leap. It's something that the rest of the industry has been not just dragging it's heels on, but in my opinion has been mildly afraid of given the scale and depth of the supplier ecosystem entrenched with 12V.

Custom 300 series steel - same as being used in the starship - it's just so cool.

If it were launched in India at the prices mentioned - ~50L for AWD and ~80L for the beast - I wonder how well it'd sell!

Man, the quality of the video and Jason's perfectionism are second to none. I miss the MotorTrend days with Johnny and Jason; they were entertaining and educational to a T.

I still dread the Reddit post from six years ago where Johnny announced Jason had decided to leave MotorTrend. Many have tried to emulate the pairing, but their chemistry and camaraderie were just on another level, dare I say, on par with Top Gear...!!
