Let’s go for a second assumption. We looked at government statistics and they say now 65% of your electrical energy is still produced by fossil fuels. These are produced in factories that don’t have any cleansing mechanisms or something like that. If I compare it to a BS-IV diesel engine, at the moment, I would have to say BS-IV diesel is less polluting than an electric vehicle … It gets even worse because by 2020 we are going to be at BS-VI, and the (vehicle) pollution will further come down. The question is, can the electricity producing industry keep up with the improvements in the automotive business.

Why he is suppressing the fact that majority of the new electricity capacity addition coming from renewable sources like Solar and Wind power?

Solar capacity reached 13,652 MW now compared to just 2,600 MW 3 years back. Rooftop solar also growing at a rapid pace. Wind power capacity reached 32 GW by March 2017. Central govt expanded the mega solar park scheme from 20,000 MW to 40,000 MW last year.

In 2016-17 financial year, total solar+wind power capacity addition is more than fossil fuel capacity addition. In future also renewable capacity grows rapidly while coal power capacity declines rapidly because solar not just reached price parity with coal, it even surpassed coal for cheap power.

These traditional automobile companies try as much as possible to stop the EV revolution.

As per the latest economic survey released on Friday, India's solar power capacity to surpass the coal power capacity by 2027.

As of today the total power capacity is 327 GW out of which 192 GW is based on coal and 57 GW is renewable energy. Wind capacity is at 32 GW and solar capacity is 13 GW.

Transition to clean energy is already happening at a rapid pace and in the last financial year (2016-17) India added more renewable energy capacity than thermal power capacity. This trend is going to accelerate in the coming years towards clean energy with falling costs of solar and wind power.

Solar power price are now cheaper Rs 2.44 per unit than the coal power (Rs 3.20) by NTPC. NTPC coal power is cheapest among all the coal power companies. State and private coal power costs more than Rs 4 and in some states its even more.

With this transition towards clean power generation and residential rooftop solar, electric vehicles will become much more clean and efficient than fuel based vehicles.

Hyundai today announced their updated electric vehicle plans. Below are the highlights.

1. Hyundai developing its first dedicated electric vehicle platform, which will allow the company to produce multiple models with longer driving ranges.

2. Hyundai will release electric version of its Kona small sport utility vehicle (SUV) with a range of 390 km in the first half of next year.

3. They are planning to launch an electric sedan under its high-end Genesis brand in 2021 with a range of 500 km (310 miles) per charge.

It seems Tata, Mahindra and Ashol Leyland have formed a consortium to develop Electric bus. Earlier the three have come together to develop an electric car but the same has been scrapped and instead turned towards development of Electric Bus.

Speaking to Moneycontrol, Chief of International Operations, M&M, Arvind Mathew said, "The car consortium for which the companies had got together is converted to an e-bus consortium."

As per sources the participation and contribution of government are very important for the success of this project. The Central Government has assured to bear half the cost of the project.

The key motto of the project is to bring down the cost of the electric bus which is very high. A 9-metre electric bus from Tata Motors costs Rs 1.6 crore and the 12-metre bus costs Rs 2 crore.

LA-based Tesloop, a taxi operator using Tesla vehicles, has reached the milestone of 300,000 miles on its first car, a Tesla Model S. The service started in 2015.

They have also shared the total expenses incurred on the vehicle. Shockingly, it is a very low figure.

During the first 300,000 miles the total combined maintenance and fuel costs of the Tesla Model S were $10,492, with a total of 12 days in the shop. Of these costs, $6,900 was scheduled maintenance and $3500 was headlight damage due to driving through deep water.

Thats Rs. 6,72,904 (at today's exchange rate) for 4,82,800 kms. This mans a low Rs 1.393 per km!

40% Of All New Vehicles Sold In Norway In August Were Plug-In EVs.

For just the second time, Norway has exceeded 40% market share for plug-in electric vehicles, taking a massive 40.2% of the over light vehicle sales in the country for August (the record of 42.4% was set this past June).
Total new registrations of passenger cars amounted 5,393, the second best result ever; a figure that is also 43% higher than a year ago.

If we go by the government indications, the EV policy should be in place by end of the year or early next year. That being said much work still need to be done by the manufacturers to prepare for eventual push from the government to move towards all electric by 2030.

About time the manufacturers start working towards coming up with a good product platform, ensure localization of components especially the batteries to ensure the prices of the end product is significantly lower and affordable than what they are selling for now and to establish a good service network. So it does makes sense if these big groups can join hands and collaborate to speed up the process. EV and alternative fuel is the future and probably our "only" way ahead . So the future market is huge and am sure if they stand together they can all stand to benefit.

but question arises is that if they couldn't come together to build a car but now they plan to build an EV bus together? only one thing comes in mind is that with Electric intra city/town buses they can get immediate business from government and lets assume can share the pie . But I wonder if this collaboration is also technology related. If yes, then what stopping them from building cars together. ?

Nissan will reveal an electric SUV based on new Leaf platform as per Leaf designer Alfonso Albaisa. The SUV will be slightly larger than Nissan Qashqai which is currently being sold in many European markets with petrol and diesel engines.

As per the Autocar.co.uk report it will be revealed in Tokyo motor show in October and will go on sale in 2019. Nissan is also developing sedan model based on the Leaf platform. Both SUV and sedan will have the same battery size (40 kWh) as in new Leaf.
