DIY: Replacing a Dashcam's internal battery

My 3 year old 70Mai Smart Dash Cam Pro decided to die on me a couple of weeks ago which according to some videos is a year more than normal for a battery based unit in a warm climate. I did all the usual trouble shooting and verified that the hard wire connection was ok, the fuse tap hadn't blown and tried a hard reboot by holding the selector button down for about a minute but no luck.

Sent off a mail to Nexdigitron support who said nothing could be done and suggested I buy a 70mai A510 for 11K which I wasn't going to do. A friend sent me a link where Nexdigitron was selling replacement battery's for newer 70mai models but mine wasn't listed and also a tutorial on how to change a 70mai battery. I took the plunge and went about opening up my unit which if one has the right tools is a 5 minute job to find the battery inside was the same replaceable unit being sold by Nexdigitron (for 1000 bucks) and promptly placed an order which arrived in a couple of days.

One needs tiny fingers to access the 3 pin connector but managed to remove the old battery, fit the replacement and connect the unit back onto the car and pray. Prayers were answered and the unit came back on.

Moral of story is if you have basic DIY skills please do a little research and some investigating and it might end up saving you a ton of cash (maybe not a ton) if you have an older 70mai dashcam or any dashcam that uses a battery.

Posting a YouTube link on how to replace the battery and some pics of my DIY attempt.

The dashcam disassembled. One really needs a set of precision screwdrivers for watches, luckily I had something I could use

If one had soldering skills one can get a replacement battery for less than INR100

If my assumptions are correct, those look like 18650 model cells. If one has soldering skills, or more suitably/accurately spot welding skills (to reinstall that 1S BMS), one can get a replacement battery for free by reclaiming one from dead/defective laptop computer battery packs or dead/defective USB power banks

Note : 1S BMS = A battery management system circuit for 1 cell in series.

Re: DIY: Replacing a Dashcam's internal battery

Thank you for sharing the DIY for your dashcam. I would like to check that your dashcam doesn't require power supply via the 12v port, for regular use? What is the purpose of the battery if not for regular operation?

TIA
