Re: Wireless Android Auto Dongle for your car using Raspberry Pi Zero W

Can use this USB-A Addon Board V1.1 - https://amzn.to/4g3MC9o to make a USB stick? This will avoid cable management and be equivalent to the aftermarket dongles available.

Re: Wireless Android Auto Dongle for your car using Raspberry Pi Zero W

Just wanted to share that in case you are planning to buy Raspberry Pi from online store then please avoid buying from this website : https://www.electronicscomp.com/

I have ordered it on 22nd Aug and till date awaiting delivery, the customer service number and email are unresponsive. There is no way to cancel the order online, hence I had to raise dispute with payment gateway and initiate a refund and also filed a complaint with Department of Consumer Affairs.

I believe this could simplify a few things. I've placed an order and will share an update once it arrives.

Re: Wireless Android Auto Dongle for your car using Raspberry Pi Zero W

This worked beautifully for me as well. I used the Raspberry Pi zero 2w as it made sense to buy a faster chip for just 100 Rs. extra. Thanks so much for this post.

One thing I observed is that the micro USB cable needs to be connected to the USB OTG port rather than the one that's written PWR. The entire process took 10 mins for me.

Re: Wireless Android Auto Dongle for your car using Raspberry Pi Zero W

Love such DIYs, thanks for sharing.

Will there be an additional USB port to this Pi based device to attach the phone in wired mode for longish drives? If not then is there any way to add one? Don't want to keep removing and attaching the device all the time to connect the phone in wired mode.

I will definitely try this hack but you skipped the taxes in the cost of the board which would make it around 1500 and the overall cost will go up 2000

Practically all cars these days support Android Auto, but most of the time, it needs to be connected via a wire. Personally, I find it a cumbersome, more so with my Nexon, since it supports only wired Android Auto. In my search for Wireless Android Auto Dongle, it was found that they are quite expensive, upwards of Rs. 6000, and that not having very good reviews. So I looked for other solutions, and after some searching, I got a way to set up Wireless Android Auto using a Raspberry Pi Zero W.

Things Required:
  • Raspberry Pi Zero W
A Raspberry Pi Zero W is a very small, cheap model with on-board Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Its easily Available on Amazon or any other Ecommerce Portal. I bought it from Silverline Electronics at the Price of Rs. 1240.
  • Any OEM Mirco USB cable is fine.
  • SD Card of Any size of card is fine, as more or less, we need 32 MB space. You will also need an SD card reader.
  • The head unit shall support a wired Android Auto and shall have a display screen.

Thanks, is there any way we could also have apple car play working in the same setup? Thanks

Re: Wireless Android Auto Dongle for your car using Raspberry Pi Zero W

Awesome post fspeed100!

I was planning to buy the linkit kit but now I am going to go the Raspberry Pi way. Just one query, can we use the memory card on the Raspberry Pi to store and play music? Or do we need to remove the card to attach a separate pen drive for music?

I am not sure if putting additional load on Raspberry would be fruitful? Would be better to use your phone for storing those songs. These days I used Amazon Music Streaming service and download songs in offline mode for bad network coverage areas!

This is a really good DIY and the OP has taken the pain to write about it in this forum to help others who may have the time and skills to do this for themselves. IMO, it is not appropriate to just dismiss this by saying that it is too much hassle and less reliable than off-the-shelf solutions - OP is not asking anyone to do it. I am sure it won't be a hassle but an interesting small project for those who decide to get it done. Those who have implemented it have posted their positive opinions too.

I am ordering the required items right away! If it doesn't work, or is not reliable, then I am sure I will find other uses for the Pi.

I agree with you completely. One suggestion to all from my side is to buy the Pi zero 2 w rather than the 0w as it's almost 5 times faster in some cases and costs just 100 extra before tax.

Make sure you download the right image file from GitHub.

Cheers

Can you please confirm if we can plug the phone in wired mode by plugging the cable in the second USB port (if available)? I don't want to keep removing and plugging the device all the time to use wired or wireless mode depending on the duration of my drives.

The micro SD card holds the operating system for the PI, it cannot be used for anything else with current image that project developer has provided. PI 0 act as dongle to passthrough your AA data between phone and HU; it does not act as pen drive. So you cannot play music from that same SD card on PI 0. As the AA/data USB port on car is already used by PI 0 in this case, better option would be to play from Mobile over AA instead of playing from pen drive.

I do not think so. The PI works as dongle to passthrough your AA from mobile to HU. So your wireless AA between mobile and PI dongle becomes wired AA between PI dongle and HU. Secondly, one of the ports on PI 0 is already connected with AA USB for it to work as dongle; the other available port is only "power in" for PI 0, not data. Finally, I think, no need to worry about long or short drive; there is no harm for long duration usage of PI 0 as dongle. All Pi models are developed to work 24x7x365 without issues. If you want your mobile to be charged, connect it to another charging port (only for charging) or use wireless charging if available.

Quoting bellow from saikishor who says it worked in Honda HU (in previous post he mentioned it is Honda Amaze). Check if your connections are correct; also try with a different data cable. And follow the steps mentioned in saikishor's post.
