DIY : Door Ajar Warning Lamp : Maruti Suzuki Alto

Hey team,

As from my last post I had got good response and encouragement to post my DIYs, here I will be starting, buckle up

1. Door Ajar warning in instrument cluster:

Few cars (especialy old Altos) did not come with door ajar warning lamp and was bad for Alto owners, so am I. This is why I did a DIY by simple hacks.

I first downloaded the door open symbol from Google images and took a print of it with black background. If your printer doesn’t have enough juice for black darken it with may be a sketch pen or something. Here is the printout:

Now you have to take out the instrument cluster assy out of car dashboard. Be careful not to tamper any couplers or wiring as these are very fragile. On Alto, if you see the assy backside, you will notice lot of sockets left blank for T5 type bulbs on either sides of temperature gauge and Fuel Gauge. So you can choose any of them.

Then you need to remove complete guage (be extremly careful) safely by unscrewing it from behind and it will come off loose from cluster bracket.

Now you need to scratch the backside of the gauge gently to scrape away black film on a part which covers the socket you intended to use for door ajar. You should be able to see enough light passes through it:

Now affix the cropped print out to the cleared area on the Guage and test if you see light masked by door open symbol. You can use any glue as long as it doesn't mess with print ink or paper.

Here is circuit diagram for it:

Also, I used the pin on instrument cluster PCB membrane that was blank so that it would look better and shouldn’t confuse technicians with more wiring

Finally:

2. Buzzer for lock system.

If your Alto is equipped with Central lock (particularly NCS 509) then you can also get buzzer to make you aware of any door is not latched properly and when you hit 20-25 kmph.
The idea is to use circuit from Valet switch lamp LED connected to security module which blinks intermittently.

Mine has been working fine (may be I woll upload a video of it) and how it works is with this below circuit diagram)

I will update some more DIYs in same thread, this Weekend, pardon me if any of these processes are silly, I did these when I was in 12th

oops I am sorry that’s from my old assy which i use as prototype. I will send them soon, need to open my dashboard. This way I can also show wiring work.

PS the printout you see is another lamp I just did for fancy central lock valet lamp

Here is pic of that as well (Available on my new cluster too):

The process for this lamp also remains same.
IIRC I used same printout from prototype and transferred it to new cluster. (I changed cluster in between due to messed up speedo, you can even see that on odo readings).

So what type of buzzer are you using exactly and how did you manage to get the speed sensor that latched the locks as we hit above 20KMPH?

The speed sensor is indeed already equipped, I think its purple running down near instrument cluster, its input is also taken by the security module (if equipped) which auto locks vehicle after 25kmph (based on settings, an alternative is when u put it on ignition or you can disable auto arming completely). But if the lock is not successful (usually because of door not latched properly), LED blinks for few seconds (to alert driver), so I just used normal piezo electric buzzer for this. Now whenever I have door open, or any event like shock sensor was triggered or door was opened with unauthorised access, the buzzer will activated in same pattern as LED does, except that since I have connected negative to door jamb switch, it only activates when door is open. This way I won’t have unintentional activation of buzzer (its literally intended only to alert when door is open).

My vehicle is not equipped with factory security system, it's an aftermarket central locking system from Auto Cop, when ignition is on it lock all the doors after 30 seconds. Incase it detects 1 of the door is open or not closed properly it will not lock any of the doors. Speed sensing locking system would be great and a secure system. Which I'm excited to work on this project.
Moreover the buzzer I'm getting are really loud like in Tata vehicles
I need something which is a bit soothing for the ears. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
In case you can share the exact guide on how to wire the speed sensing locking system that would be a great help too.

Re: DIY : Door Ajar Warning Lamp : Maruti Suzuki Alto

Hey BHPians,

sorry for being so late, as I had to remove the console garnish for wiring of electrically actuated mirrors (will post this DIY soon), Here is how instrument cluster looks from behind:

DIY : Door Ajar Warning Lamp : Maruti Suzuki Alto-img_0953.jpeg

I used the blank pin on the K coupler for door ajar warning lamp to make it look and work little neat.

and this is how the wiring is made for lamp, security valet lamp and buzzer:

Looking really near and clean, more than a professional electrician can do here in India. Pannag, just curious to know have you installed any rear courtesy lamp or just 1 at the front above the mirror ?
Moreover waiting for the update on ORVMs.

yes the rear lamp has been fixed with 3D printed bracket and some adjustments in roof liner, I am using one that comes in swift.

And ORVM, its already available here:

Wouldn't it have been easier to swap the black plate from a higher spec scrap unit (and maybe get a tach too)?

I think vivek may be asking about your plans for folding orvm's

That's pretty much awesome, so have you tried to adjust the settings on the same. Like when you open the front doors the front courtesy light should turn on. And when opening the rear doors the rear courtesy light should turn on contrary. This kind of setting seems pretty much descent. I was trying able to do so but security system was not functional either at the front or at the rear.
You seems to be pretty much handy on electric parts and adjustments.

Damn it you stole surprise thread

And guess what last week I installed this unit with some modifications like blue illumination, door ajar warning addition, changing all t5 lamps to LEDs And door ajar lamp is not direct usable, there is another coupler which is not included even in VXI wiring.

And on Boodmo if you wonder why it went out of stock, there was only one in stock which I bought lol

Thank you soo much You are very close to what I have ideated haha. actually I am designing my own infotainment system with door open UI on touchscreen. This requires separation of infact all doors which are tied on same network in current setup.

I also had eye on it but it wasn't compatible with mine moreover you ordered the last piece from Boodmo.
Incase you have any idea related to cluster upgrade for mine it's most welcome. Mine is small single coupler and no option to install T10 LED's it got integrated SMD's which is pretty much complicated to work with.
Anyways after upgrading this is looking pretty much cool with LED's. I hope the brightness is adjustable if not you can also adjust this from infom attainment system some do have inbuilt brightness adjustment which can be configured with headlight turning on and off. I'm not sure as of now what are your upcoming plans on the UI based infotainment system. I'm pretty sure it will also bring a lot of grace whatever you have planned.

Infact BS3 Alto has some missing pins in couplers (L and K), I luckily got complete service manual of export version F10D Alto (which also came with Airbags), referring to this I made changes, added some functionality. And guess what BS3 Alto do not have EPS light, even if equipped (in LXI). But I believe EPS module has output for warning lamp as shown in that manual. Another thing is door ajar is only available in form of chimes, thought the lamp is provisioned but its circuit is taken from another coupler which is missing in any version of Alto. So I shorted it with wire separately to L7. Also tons of thanks to old thread someone had shared pictures of coupler pin diagrams from BS2 (16 bit ECM) Alto.

And as of now I ain't got illumination control as I got shifted B’lore so my projects progress is lil slow.

We will try to get service manual for your model and see if we can do something about it, else we can even go for separate Tacho. IIR its DDLI system F8D, so we can take CKP input, but need to check the setup.
