DIY: Restoration of the Steering Wheel Emblem

My Mercedes CLA steering wheel Emblem's polish has faded away with time, cannot conclude the reason behind this as I never faced this issue in my other cars. I can't comment on whether the car wash service centre applied bad interior polish or Emblem Quality is bad from the factory. God Knows.

1. First thing I did was to call the ASS and shared this issue with them, as my car was out of warranty they told me - The whole steering wheel Airbag Module needs to be changed and It will cost around 1.20 lakh rupees.

2. Next searched online and learned about Coating Daddy Removable Rubber Paint and ordered it. It costs just Rs 200 + Rs 120 shipping charges.

Another option was Plasti-Dip but it is not easily available in India. On Amazon, it was priced close to Rs 7000.

The next contender was Rust-oleum and there were few colour options available on Amazon.

Leaving the link of Coating Daddy, there are many colour options available-

Re: DIY- Restoration of Steering Wheel Emblem

As the chrome colour option is not available so I thought the best colour option for me was a red colour as it will match the exterior red paint of my car and will not look out of place. You can buy any colour you like.

After 3 coats

Final Result

After peeling the paint off, I cleaned the area with a wet cloth also to remove all the residue.

Will buy toothpicks from the market tomorrow and give the last finishing to the edges.

Looks great! I did notice though, it seems like the number of layers of the paint are too few. Can see the chrome through the paint, and the colour isn't deep red yet. Maybe a couple of more layers could make it perfect.

Anyway, good read!

This was my first time with paint in my hand, so I made some errors, the paint didn't reach evenly on the right side of the emblem.

To all the people who will do this, my suggestion is to spray the paint from all 360-degree directions.

Yes. On the online website, the colour shown on the can was matching exactly with my CLA but in reality, this is slightly on the maroon side.

I will keep it for 1 month and after that, I will repaint it with some other colour.

Re: DIY: Restoration of the Steering Wheel Emblem

I don't mean to disrespect your efforts, but to be honest, that color has let you down. I can imagine what you thought it would look like, but the outcome is not close. But hey, that's the beauty of peelable rubber paint, we always have a second chance.

Regarding PlastiDip products, you may try reaching out to Ullas from Flaunt Your Color. The contact number is present within Google listing itself. I bought a couple of cans from him around four years ago, he was very prompt. We coordinated over phone and payments were all online. The package was delivered within 4 days from Bangalore. That coat is still on the badges of my scooter till this day. I cannot recollect the prices, but it was nowhere near 7K.

Re: DIY: Restoration of the Steering Wheel Emblem

Thanks for the informative story on the restoration.
My Honda's steering emblem had turned yellowish from the original crome finish. Taking inspiration from your thread, I am also charged up to take on this project.

What are other dos and don't. How did you controlled the spray spread. Did the droplets spread to seats and any other surrounding components?

Hey,
Hold the can 15 cm away from the steering.
I went from top to bottom in a zig-zag manner

You can check out the video for further help.

Thanks a lot for the video. From what I see, peeling the paint off seems to be hard part.

Re: DIY: Restoration of the Steering Wheel Emblem

Hey Buddy,

I hope was around before!! Could have helped you.

I have a spare Merc steering lying around from my GLA as I upgraded to an AMG steering.

For less than the amount dealership was asking could have given you the whole steering some more!!

That said, you may want to consider doing this again but only this time instead of spray, try powder coating.
There are many powder coating guys around and they do a solid job of giving you a great finish.
That is if your choice of color is anything other than chrome.

Another option is Etsy. Etsy has some of the widest options for mercedes micro accessories that you could get for a decent price.

Option3 is what I did. I bought a custom AMG steering from China. And boy I was not disappointed!

If you want any further ideas lemme know could share some links fot parts on etsy or one for new steering wheel.
By the way I paid like 70k fot the whole thing

Re: DIY: Restoration of the Steering Wheel Emblem

The damage is surely because of some polish/cleaning solution has been applied on the emblem. Some of these guys do irreparable damage in the name of cleaning.

The result of your paint mod is not very good if I have to be honest. Consider it as a happy accident and buy a fancy steering wheel like @R4g3z did.
