Auto-Close & One Touch UP windows

Another electronic mod on IronHide. This one was completed literally in 30 minutes inclusive of research. A very useful one indeed. So here's the DIY thread, sharing how I did it. The window auto-roll-up relay kit from RD is picking up some speed in the after-market accessory arena by the looks of it. I have come across a couple of videos already for it on YouTube. I'm sure its available at most car accessory stores at pretty affordable costs. What will this DIY achieve differently compared to the standard installation? We'll not splice a single stock wire. Not even a scotch tap.

Overview

• IronHide, my nexon will be the car on which the mod will be done. Boy with the list of mods done in just 1 year - the car actually is starting to justify the name of a Transformer!
• The exact same process & RD kit works for the HEXA, ALTROZ, TIAGO, TIGOR also.
• In my books - even a splice / scotch lock / T-Tap is fiddling with factory harness. I never do it as long as car is in warranty. And I always find ways around it. Like in IronHide - I have a Bluetooth powered set of fog lights because I didn't want to run a wire through the firewall grommet!
• Basically the kit is simple. A set of 4 additional relays in a box that piggy-backs on top of the existing Power Window control module (which itself has relays to respond to power window control buttons in the doors).
• The kit comes brand/car specific and has matching male & female couplers that plug the kit between the stock harness & the stock window control relay module.
• All that this kit does is - sense a DOOR LOCK signal from the car & use the stock harness' 12V signal to then sequentially fire 4 relays in UP direction circuit in order to drive the stock window module to close any open windows.
• Since this kit closes the windows upwards automatically - it already has a feature that it exploits to also bring a "One Touch UP" functionality in all windows! The same trigger as lock is fired, but by user input on the button instead. Splendid & simple!

IMPORTANT NOTE - This project involves fiddling with fuses, stock wiring that also has high power motors. So as a rule - the first step is to disconnect the -ve terminal of the car's battery & keeping it aside safely. This will ensure complete safety during the process. Reconnect the battery only after you have secured & double-verified that all wiring is correctly completed.

The Kit - RD Auto Window Closer

This is what I procured - directly by contacting the RD Pune Regional sales manager (via their website). The MRP is 2400. I got it for 2200 without installation. Accessory stores must be installing it at much lesser in most parts of the country.

As you can see - the packaging clearly states compatible cars. Since the harness & controller logic is same - the kit works on all these cars -




Wiring & Kit contents explained -





I have already marked the purpose of each wire & connector, should be easy to understand from it.

• The ORANGE wire is what sends a momentary 12V pulse signal to the relay kit when central door lock is "locked".
• Obviously - as a standard practice - this wire is hooked up into the LOCK wire of the harness coming from driver door.
• And thats why the kit contains that scotch lock. I won't be using it.
• Now - we also lock the doors while driving the car. Some cars in fact auto-lock the doors after 10KMPH is achieved (God I miss this feature!). We might not appreciate the windows rolling up every time the door is locked - even if we are in the car & driving it.
• Thats what the BROWN wire does. We need to tap it into a fuse that is powered when the car is in IGN/ACC mode & not hot when car is off/locked. You can find such fuses easily. I had already identified one & even had a spare tap in place!
• So the Brown wire gets 12V when car is running & that is used as a switch to disable the auto-roll up feature. Still - the one touch up continues to work.
• The YELLOW wire I suspect is for cars that might not be getting a regular 12V supply to the stock window harness. In such cases - this might need to be tapped into the battery or into a fuse that gets 12V when car is off. In our case - we have to ignore it altogether & secure it safely. (Please check for your car. It may be different if its a different car!)

How To - Without Wire Splice / Tap

1. Now if you understood the purpose of the orange wire above - you'll realize that all we need is a momentary pulse of 12V when the central door lock triggers.
2. For central locking - a car always has relays. 1 relay for LOCK & 1 relay for UNLOCK.
3. The way a central lock actuator in the door is designed (universally same method for these solenoids) - it has 2 bidirectional inputs that are hot only during the movement.
4. So a short pulse of 12V in LOCK or UNLOCK direction moves the locks in that direction & then they "rest" there. No voltage/current actually flows through this circuit after the actuation is complete.
5. All we do now is - find the LOCK relay. Its always a "Change-over" type relay that clicks, does its job & then idles. It doesn't keep the coil engaged permanently.
6. These relays are generally 5 pin type. And in 5 pin relays, its the PIN 86 that gets a 12V trigger that does the activation.
7. Finding the LOCK relay is simple. Just look at the diagram in your manual / fuse box cover & it will tell you which is the relay. As you can see - in my case, its the R7 relay. The position for it is also given in another diagram. I forgot to take a picture of it.
   
   
   
   
   
8. And here is the relay that I took home for wiring into it. I have marked the pin 86 for easy reference.
   
   
   
   
9. If your car doesn't give this diagram - simply touch each relay one by one & "LOCK" the doors. You'll feel which relay is clicking on the lock action. Thats the one of interest. Simple.
10. All we need to do is - take the orange wire & fix it to the pin 86 of the lock relay. Et viola! No wire splice needed & the purpose is served.
    
    
    
    
    
11. Once all set - put the relay back into housing with this orange wire along with it.
12. Just take care. If you aren't used to handling electronic circuits & wiring - better get the wire splice done & done from outside. Piggy-backing wiring into a relay socket needs to be done carefully. Stray wire strands can cause short circuit with catastrophic outcomes.

Final Installation Process

Let's get on with it then. We have already prepared the RD relay kit by plugging it together with the car's LOCK relay & identifying which wire does what.

1. Find your car's existing window controller box. In case of the Nexon, this black box is mounted exactly behind the fuse box. Its almost completely hidden from sight. All you see - is a bunch of wires from the lower edge coming out and via a conduit vanishing into the bas of the driver A pillar. They go into the door.
2. Reach the bottom edge of it & disconnect the stock connector along with the wires. Careful - do NOT pull holding the wires. There is a push-lock built into the removable connector on the RHS edge which is completely invisible. Feel it by your hands, push it in & pull the connector downwards.
   • To give an idea of the orientation.- we are looking from the driver's footwell towards the firewall, slightly upwards from the position of feet.
   • The black metal hinge on lower center area is the accelerator pedal assembly.
   • The shiny metal parts are a metal plate. on our side of it in this image is the cabin fuse box mounted. On the other invisible side - the power window controller module.
   
   
   
   
   
3. This removed connector would be a female. The stock control unit has a male coupler for it.
4. Now connect the RD box's male coupler with the stock wiring's female connector that we just removed.
5. Obviously - connect the RD box's female coupler back into the stock controller's male socket (from where we removed the original connector). Take care of the orientation. The RD connector's push lock should also be on the RHS when you install it. In the image below - you'll see a small extended downward tip on the RHS of the connector. Thats the push-lock latch you have to press to unlock.
   
   
   
   
   
6. Now - safely turn in & tape over the yellow wire. We do not want it's wires to ever touch anything accidentally.
   
   
   
   
   
7. Our orange wire is already plugged into the relay above.
   
   
   
   
   
8. Tap the BROWN wire into a fuse that has 12V supply in IGN/ACC mode & not when car is off. I used the fuse #11 in Nexon. Its for the EPAS/Immobilizer/Cluster power. Only on in ACC mode.
   
   
   
   
   
9. The wiring part is now complete!
10. The RD Box has an ordinary quality double sided tape provided on its back. I simply used it to paste the box on the LHS edge of the fuse box. There is ample surface area there to hold it safely & without getting into way of anything.

12. Now carefully turn the wiring loom of the RD box out of the way of everything (pedals/steering assembly etc) and secure it tight with the provided 2 zip tags. Use extra zip tags from your own collection if needed. As many as required.
    
    While in the image it might look like the loom is too close to the steering rod - it isn't. Its just an illusion. There are good 3-4 inches of clearance in reality.
    
    
    
    
    
13. Secure the orange & brown wires out of the way of everything else & to ensure they don't move about causing lose connections. Use zip ties and available plastic/metal beams for the purpose. I have used the black plastic horizontal beam behind the dash-board lower half to hold these wires in place.
    
    
    
    
    
14. And the installation procedure is complete!

Closing Comments

• Am I happy - Yes! Totally worth the money spent & really easy to install as well. Quite a good feature this. No longer will I suddenly jump at the dinner table saying "I think I left one of the windows open!". (Believe me I have done this countless times.)
• To ensure minimal currant draw on harness and battery, the relays trigger one by one. At a time only one motor runs. Order is LR-RR-FL-FR. Neat.
• FasTag implemented for tolls & malls (with parking ticket machines) closed due to Covid19. This means the one touch DOWN feature is pretty much useless. On the other hand - the one touch UP feature on ALL windows is mighty impressive. I always wanted it & now I have it.
• What about anti pinch? - Technically it doesn't have the traditional anti-pinch where the window senses even a tiny resistance & rolls back. Instead - it will continue to roll up. Upon reaching the top-most possible point (considering there is something in the way) - the window will stop rolling. It won't keep forcing upwards, nor will it roll down.
  • Will it hurt - only to a very little infant (and I don't see this scenario materializing if the parents are even remotely careful). For anyone else - it will not hurt physically (I have tested keeping my hand in it). It might freak out / scare someone though.
  • In my car - my kid is always secured in his child seat & buckled in before I fire up the engine. From his place - he can never reach the window. So there is little chance of any mishap. Additionally - I have the mesh type magnetic window shades on the windows. So its pretty much impossible to put anything out of the window.
• It works exactly as desired. The windows do not auto-roll up if the car is locked from inside when in ignition mode or running. One touch UP will continue to work even when the car is running. Neat.
• Like my car - if your car has factory provided one touch DOWN feature on the driver (or any) window - it will continue to work as it is. No change.
• Like mentioned before - the same process & kit will work for quite a few current Tata cars. So great. Would I recommend it - certainly I would.
• Those who feel an active anti-pinch is a must for one touch up - don't install it. There is no way to disable it.
• The kit comes with a 1 year full replacement warranty from RD. RD so far has seemed to be very good on product quality as well as warranty support. Hopefully that will continue.

A neat mod you’ve got there. I already have one touch down for all windows on my Hexa. However, I don’t think I’ll be able to make my peace with this as one touch up without anti pinch is risky in my book, especially for a family car.

Without anti pinch, I am comfortable with only the driver’s window having one touch up. That will always be in my control. For the rest, I won’t risk it.

Neat mode, I always wished for one touch up, at least for the driver window.
But Maruti being them, decided the middle variant didn't deserve it. It's only available on the top variant.

One doubt though - can you halt the window wherever you want or will it always go till the top?

Lovey mod there. Auto up / down is something you miss if you have experienced it anytime but lack it in your car. While the overall use of windows have gone down (with everyone preferring AC and thanks to Fastag), there are times when you have to roll down the windows quickly and get them up once you zoom away.

Just one question - you mentioned that it doesn't have anti pinch, but would it be possible to selectively disable it? Eg. only driver's window has auto up / down while others have just auto down?

Thanks. And yes - precisely. Agree with all points. And indeed it was a tryst with the feature while abroad that made me like/want it so much.

Well out of the box - no can't be disabled. We'll have to open the box & check the circuit & make changes to it to achieve this. It can be done for sure this way - but would void the warranty of the kit.

A few more personal opinions specifically about Anti Pinch -

1. The one touch up from individual window door switches would be controlled by the individual in that seat. So anti-pinch won't be a must. Unless of course the person is clinically insane. If indeed a passenger with such a condition is travelling, its only logical to ensure the master window control from driver panel is disabled for passengers.
2. That leaves the scenario of the driver rolling up the windows for other doors.
3. Now - imagine the situation where the car does not have one touch up NOR does it have a relay kit added like above -
   • While driving - the driver holds the button up, to roll up the windows. Do the passengers get any specific warning that the windows are going to start rolling up? No!
   • For the passengers the behaviour is identical either way when the driver rolls up the windows.
   • Does the driver actually look at each window while driving when rolling them up? No. It would be fatal.
4. The one touch up without anti-pinch is more or less similar to no one touch up in most cases.
5. Marginally more care would be required - but I think any sensible person would & should do so when knowing such a kit is installed.

Why does this kit not have anti pinch ?

Simple! The kit only operates the car's existing relays for actuation. For active-one-touch - there need to be very precise pressure sensors at the base of each window winder that recognize unusual resistance by the window in rolling up. This kit doesn't touch any of those parts. So can only stop rolling when the usual motor winding resistance is sensed by variance in the currant draw. Just like when the glass reaches the top of the window.

Great modification to your car! Quick question, I may have missed it in the main text.. Did you replace the individual switches as well? Because the traditional AUTO switch has a click when pressed or pulled

Thanks. Yes - the actual "one touch" part is built into the controller module in any car. The switches only send the appropriate trigger for it. For example some OEMs use a two step switch that sends the "normal" and "one touch" triggers. The controller box itself still needs to have the circuit built to act accordingly.

Thanks! No, I have not changed the switches as part of this project. This works on the existing switches of the car. Like I mentioned above, the switch implementation depends on each OEM's approach.

(As a matter of fact, I have indeed changed the switches also in the car 2 weeks ago, for a totally different project. Added illuminated switches in place of the black ones. However - functionally the switches are identical to original ones. No difference.)

Without even opening the thread i could tell that it was by you, maybe the design of the tiles or maybe the various details highlighted in the picture were a giveaway, mind you i use a phone where the image is of a very small size.

But anyways a great DIY thread, i wish i had a Nexon instead, i could have done so many DIYs. Your car is already full of so many stuff, i wonder what it would become in 5 years, maybe Optimus Prime!
