Lockdown. 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 4.0.

Kungfu Panda (Jr.) was hibernating for a long time now. April the IInd, my kitty cat, watches over Kungfu Panda (Jr.) from above, and protects him from rodents during his hibernation session.


Introducing April the IInd


Boodmo, the automotive component supplier was delivering me items during lock down 4.0, and amazon delivered me the very next day the restrictions were relaxed, the order I had placed some weeks back, the auto folding ORVM module.

We need 3 of this Splice wire tap to complete the DIY


So with the components in hand for the DIY, I set out for the operation under the watchful eyes of April the IInd.

Curtains up!!


The component cost
1. Auto folding ORVM Module - Rs. 1400.00
2. Splice Wire Tap 3 No.s - Rs 75.00
all of Rs 1475 and some 30 minutes of your time for the DIY

Let us get into action.

We need to open the driver side door panel, where the mirror controls are connected.

Let me tell you how to open up the driver side door panel without destroying anything :uncontrol

Operation : Opening up the driver side door Panel


There are two locks and two screws to be removed in opening up the driver door panel, and seven clips to be carefully pulled out.

One lock to the top right of the panel


Other lock to the top left of the panel


Push the middle portion of the lock inside, lock releases


Take out the lock


A look at the locks




Be careful not to break the locks, in the event of a broken lock, you have a rattling door panel after installation.

Now let us find out the screws and unscrew them

One screw is hidden inside the door handle


Slightly pop that cover out, I tried to pull it out. It did not come, since the other side is connected to the panel, so as to prevent loss of that cover


Remove the screw. You get a view as to how the cover is connected to the panel


The second screw is hidden behind the door open lever


Remove that cover to expose the screw


Remove the screw


There are seven such clips around the periphery of the panel inside




Carefully with a little force slowly pull out the panel and the clips one by one, till the door panel is fully detached from the door frame. Some times it might happen that these white clips stay in the door frame and only the panel comes out. In that case carefully unplug the same from the door frame and place them back on the panel, so that it helps you in fitting the panel back nicely and snugly fit with out rattles. If you miss or break one of these, be ready for the rattles.

Slowly slide the door panel out of the door open lever


Now the door panel is in your hand, but still the connectors are connected to the driver side door switches and mirror control.

Connector - Window lifter, lock unlock switches on the door panel


You need to pull the connectors out and the door panel is fully detached. Keep it safe somewhere.


Now that the door panel is out, we are ready for the actual DIY :thumbs up

The connector we removed form the mirror control unit from the car is the top white one. We connect that to the connector (left white big one) of the module, and the other connector (right white one) we connect back to the mirror control switch socket.

After connecting as described above, now the open white connector will be connected to the mirror control switch before we place the door panel back. Basically its as simple as that!!


Now let us take a look at the connector and wiring towards the door lock unlock solenoid


Connector removed to check out the signals.


Green wire carries the lock signal, and the white wire carries the unlock signal, whenever user requests lock/unlock with his key fob or Key less entry switch.

Now using the splice wire tap, we tap Lock signal (Green wire) for the Auto folding ORVM module (Blue Wire)


Now using the splice wire tap, we tap Unlock signal (White wire) for the Auto folding ORVM module (Green Wire)


So the lock unlock signals are now available to the module for decision


We connect it back


The module needs a 12 volt connection all the time, and we connect the red wire of the module to a battery line using the third splice wire tap.

That's it. Its done.

Carefully refit the door panel back. Press the seven clips in for a snug fit. Then put the locks, the screws and the covers back in place. It's time for rock and roll now :uncontrol

That was an easy to understand DIY and thanks for the videos at the end. Just one question, will this work for other Maruti cars that have electronic outside mirror retraction feature available?

This should work on any cars that have an automatic retraction feature for the ORVMs. All you need to look is for matching the connectors :thumbs up. I tried the same disco on my fortuner too :D

Fantastic DIY & wonderful write up. Nicely compiled & surely will be very useful for those looking to do this. And a really useful mod indeed. High-practicality modifications are always very handy & especially satisfying when done as a DIY. Every-time we use any of them - there is a recurring credit of little happiness about the DIY. Boodmo really is one of the better things that happened to car enthusiasts in recent times!

Car-makers sure must be hating us on forums for doing such things & then writing it down for others to also try. Devalues their car trims and "feature" lists. Also puts a question mark on them as people think why was such a simple thing skimped on in the first place.:D

Can we do this by playing around with the VCDS for VW cars? I knew a lot can be tweaked with VCDS in VW group cars. By playing around with VCDS, We don't even need the additional cables and removing panels.

Hi laluks , Any idea if i can make my Type 3(2012) innova OVRM close and open with touch of a button. I know it has only mirror adjustment but i am desperately looking for this add-on feature.

My doubt, when you start driving the car, it will lock the doors once you reach speed.
Won't it close the ORVM's then?

Thanks Reinhard. One would wonder what is about 1500 saved on each vehicle, may be its the volumes and less variants for manageability. Anyways!

Boodmo for Maruti works fine. I've had hard times with Honda parts. Toyota, if I am lazy to go to my Service Centre to order, I do that on Boodmo. Normally service centre in Bangalore receive in some 3 to 4 days, boodmo takes a month to deliver.

Like we discussed in the past, the first and foremost requirement here is the availability of electrically fold-able ORVMs in your car. If it is not, but a manual one, then we start with first changing the manual to an electrically controlled one. This can be expensive and for Toyota, the electrical ORVMs are about 9K a piece, and a Switch Assembly for its control some 6K and of course the wiring part.

Second requirement is the availability of auto lock unlock feature, which is already there.

Once that prerequisite is taken care then this auto folding mirror can be installed.

But the costs are almost touching 30K for you to add this now. I don't know whether its VFM in this case, but very much doable.

No, locking from inside with the lock/unlock switch and auto lock feature on reaching 10mph/16Kmph if enabled will not trigger this action. The signals are different.

I picked it up from amazon just for fun. There are many suppliers for the same. Another one is here.

Only thing I am worried and time will have to tell is how much it drains the battery, since it is always connected to battery power. Such cheap gizmos, I really doubt if it is tested for battery drains and stuffs like that. You really don't want to go to a dead battery on an urgent day you need the car. Since I have back up cars, I am just fooling around.

All you have to know is the Lock and Unlock signal input for the modules you pick, and where to tap the lock and unlock signal from your vehicle.

If you fancy you can do auto folding ORVM along with auto window pane closing. I did not like it since it closes windows one by one, and can be dangerous on cars without anti pinch if kids are around. I would not advice this, Safety is not sure. Many kits are available, one such is here.


Electrically adjustable ORVMS, with electrical folding feature is a prerequisite. Else first DIY would be to make it electrically fold-able.
