Re: DIY: Cleaning & rejuvenating the Jopasu Car Duster

I have two Jopasu's , one is four years old and one close to six years , still going strong , though the fabric cover is fast wearing out. Used to take a lot of pain to clean them , but now I just take it off the handle and toss it into a washing machine ! Works wonders , just the Duster and nothing else with it , otherwise your clothes will go for a toss.Once dry I use a comb to straighten the tangled strands and part them at the seams. You can form 4 end to end horizontal tufts if you part the seams carefully. I ensure to spray all sides of each tuft carefully in "spray" mode . Once wet on all sides , I put the sleeve back on the handle and hang dry. Once the first coat dries (after a day) , I apply the 2nd spray following the same process and hang dry for a full day again. Before each spray ensure to shake the bottle vigorously. Between all these years and amongst 2 Dusters , I have used up 3 bottles of the Rejuvenator. The Dusters just keep on going ...

Do note that the washing in a machine part is not recommended by the manufacturer.

Re: DIY: Cleaning & rejuvenating the Jopasu Car Duster

I found this process for washing the duster before spraying.

Process of washing the Jopasu duster

- Soak the duster in clean water for about 5 minutes
- Pour shampoo/liquid detergent (mild ones) over the duster and churn the water using the duster to work up a foam. You may also rub the duster with your hands. Let it rest for about 15 minutes.
- Rinse the duster in fresh clear water
- If the duster is still dirty, repeat by using a fresh water and shampoo and letting it stand for 15 minutes.
- After the duster is clean and rinsed with fresh water, let it dry.
- The duster has to be thoroughly dry before you can spray the rejuvenator on it.

Having said the above, I guess I would also try the washing machine as suggested by DriveTrain.

Re: DIY: Cleaning & rejuvenating the Jopasu Car Duster

After one year of regular usage of my Jopasu duster, I decided to rejuvenate it last Sunday. It took me two hours to completely wash the duster. It was a tough job. I used/wasted three buckets of water to clean it. Somehow, I was able to clean it properly. I followed OP's directions to spray rejuvenator on the duster. I waited one full day to use it again.

My Jopasu duster is now back in action and it works as good as a new one.

This is what I wanted to ask, does it make sense to get the rejuvenator or get a new duster, appears a new duster would be a better bet.

If you want to save yourself the hassle of cleaning and rejuvenating , then a new one makes sense. But the rejuvenation process works. I understand from the posts that the quality of the new dusters may not be same as the earlier makes , in which case it might be prudent to stick with the old one and refresh it. Ultimately your choice..

I too would buy a new duster, lets say every year rather than buying other things to clean it.

Then we can let Jopasu RIP and get something else. Success gets into everyone's head.

So 2 days back I noticed that my Jopasu duster started leaving dust on the car surface. Hence thought its time for rejuvenation. Took the duster out of its handle and put it in a bucket of water with some Ezee liquid detergent. Soaked it overnight and tried to wash it in the morning but still it is dirty and giving out brown water with every dunk in a clean water bucket. Seems like a huge wastage of water and the duster is still not clean!

And on top of that, it seems like there was still some wax left towards the roots of the bristles. Now the bucket and the whole bathroom floor feels greasy

Wow! This looks really clean! What detergent or other techniques did you use? Mine is still dirty after soaking in Ezee overnight and washing with 4-5 buckets of water.

I am also leaning towards getting a new duster. The washing part itself feels a big pain in the posterior and then the whole process of rejuvenation seems too much effort. Maybe if we take into account the water, detergent, rejuvenator and effort involved in the whole process, it might not be saving that much money compared to getting a new duster itself!

Re: DIY: Cleaning & rejuvenating the Jopasu Car Duster

So the scorching summer gave me an opportunity to rejuvenate my set of 4 dusters (bought over the last 4-5 years) last weekend. All 4 of them were heavily used and were pretty much "black" from all the dust. Of these 4, two of them were from the older days and had thicker strands of string. The other set of two was a relatively newer one and the newer set pretty much gave up on taking in more dust after about 3 months of use. The older set lasted me very very long before I started seeing streaks of dust, un-absorbed on the paint of the car. TL;DR - The newer dusters aren't all that great in terms of quality. The strands are also thinner but have a more denser arrangement (I understand that this leads to a higher surface area). However, the newer ones were pretty bad and gave up when they were "greyish" while the older ones were pure jet black!

Moving on, I used regular washing machine detergent with some liquid dishwasher into the 6+ buckets of water I used to clean them. The piping hot water from the solar heater bang in the middle of summer served well in getting the muck off pretty quickly. The bathroom floor however was a slippery waxy mess after the washing job was done.

Based on this experience, I would strongly advise against putting them in a washing machine to get them cleaned as the drum (and internals) will end up a sticky, waxy and greasy mess.

So after the wash, the dusters were dried on the terrace. The super hot summer sun did its work in no time and in about 4-5 hours, I had bone dry dusters. I used one bottle of Rejuvenator to get them back to life. Sprayed on all 4 dusters (I observed that the wastage was minimal as the stray spray particles pretty much landed on the duster fibers most of the times - there was very little "edge wastage"). Repeated the process every 3 hours, spread over 2 days in the sun and an additional day in the hot sun to let the curing process to complete.

Fast forward 4 days and I have four fully rejuvenated dusters. I noticed that the newer set that did not do well earlier were now picking up dust like never before. I guess Jopasu is skimping on the waxing of the strands as well as making heavier or thicker strands now.

I have reserved one duster exclusively for the scooters at home - given their large surface area compared to bikes, the scooters really needed something like this to keep them looking clean and dust free. The duster does a good job sweeping the dust off the speedometer area that's riddled with curves and stylish plastics that make it hard to reach using a normal cloth. The other 2 dusters are kept for the cars. Ive stopped using them currently as there is so much dust on the vehicles each day that its pointless to keep dusting them. A weekly or fortnightly water-less wash gives me better results and I use the dusters for a couple of days after the wash to keep that 'washed look' for longer.

So to summarize, the rejuvenation works well but needs lot of attention to the dusters (washing, drying, spraying, curing, etc.) If this can be done, the dusters can easily last a long time.

Well, I used Surf Excel. However, instead of keeping the duster in detergent water overnight, I kept changing the water. I kept using clean water to wash it again and again. I think that worked in my case. However, I strongly felt that it was surely a waste of water.

Thanks for your detailed explanation. It was quite useful. I had searched all over the internet for how to wash the jopasu duster and could not get any information anywhere. I had planned not to use the jopasu duster any more because I couldn't get it cleaned. Now at least I can use it again. Thanks again

I'm glad my tutorial helped you out! The rejuvenation is a painful process though so when it was time again I just decided to buy a new duster

However, the new dusters seem to be of much lower quality so it might be worth it to rejuvenate the original high quality models. It all depends on your preference.

(P.S. I haven't been logging in as much lately hence the delayed reply.)

Rant!

Some of us Chennai folks are surely cringing heavily hearing things like 5-6 buckets to wash a duster. I feel buying a new duster would be a lot more prudent than the amount of water it takes to wash the damn thing. People may say that disposing the duster is also causing pollution to the environment, but then don't throw it away, put it in a corner in your loft or under your bed, it doesn't use up that much space after all.

Re: DIY: Cleaning & rejuvenating the Jopasu Car Duster

I actually came across this thread from a review on amazon saying this tutorial was better than the instructions. Irony!

I have ordered my rejuvenator and cant wait to bring my duster back to life after 2 years of on-off usage.

Re: DIY: Cleaning & rejuvenating the Jopasu Car Duster

I recently cleaned and rejuvenated the duster. It was pretty dirty at start. Used VIM liquid and warm water. It took a total of 5 cycles to completely clean (I couldn’t even think of Cleaning it any further). Then I shaked the bottle well but spraying the rejuvenator was a big task as the wax was not getting sprayed from the sprayer. I had to coat it manually by pouring the wax over the duster and massaging it with my hands on all the strands. I must say it works too good, as good as a new one after the rejuvenation.

Some of the images I took during the process:

Almost BLACK at the start:
