Re: DIY Repair: Windshield Chip & Crack

Just a comparison picture. Actually wanted to post this but somehow couldn't add the picture as I was replying through the App.

Though it didn't solve chipping fully, I am pretty happy with the results. Look at the picture below:

DIY Repair: Windshield Chip & Crack-1horz.jpg

I can leave this for the next 35K kms till the car is sold off.

Re: DIY Repair: Windshield Chip & Crack

Great find the Windshield Repair kit, thanks for sharing
Very timely as well as there's a very minor chip on Dizzy's windshield caused by a small stone from a sand truck.
Luckily a friend is traveling to Bangalore and he is bringing it down for me, will post more after I use it on my car's windshield.

Very interesting, thanks for sharing. In most of Europe and in the USA there are specialized companies such as Carglass. See https://www.autoglass.co.uk/glass-re...screen-repair/

Over the years I have used them many, many times. In most cases their repair jobs are free of charge as many insurance companies pay for this, rather then replace the window. These repair jobs are very ver y good. Once done you will not see the cracks at all. They use special resin which is injected into the crack through a vacuum. So not suitable for DIY as you need very special tools. The one thing and that tends to be applicable to all repairs on windows, you have to make sure no water gets into the crack. Carglass provides special stickers. As soon as you have stone chip or crack put the sticker on and get it repaired asap. One of my classic cars had a stone chip on the front window when I bought it. Tried all sort of repair techniques, but could not get it fixed, to old and to much water ingress, nothing works then other then replacing the front window. Carglass will also replace your windows. In most countries they have mobile workshops that will come to you, rather then you having to come to them, very convenient.

I have probably replaced 5-7 front windows myself over the years, mostly on classic cars. And it is a pain. If you want to have a go at it yourself I would suggest to have somebody help out who has done it a few times. Lots of youtube videos to learn from too!

Quoting my own post:

To my surprise, they did refund the shipping amount and also sent another package free of cost as under their efforts to maintain customer satisfaction. Funniest part, he didn’t receive the second package too hence they did refund the full amount. Hats off to Amazon.com!
Finally received the second package that was sent by Amazon.com F.O.C.

Re: DIY Repair: Windshield Chip & Crack

Hey Anurag! Thanks much for sharing your DIY.

Thanks to you, I tried this adventure and am more than happy with the results.

Had a friend order this thing (using his Amazon Prime account) and saved on the shipping charges! So, for ~700 bucks, have a nearly spot free windshield.

The pictures below should give everyone an idea about the effectiveness of this treatment.

Re: DIY Repair: Windshield Chip & Crack

The inevitable happened and I got a similar stone chip on the windshield on my Creta. The 'Star' shaped crack is rather small and not even blocking my view, so I am undecided on getting the entire windshield replaced.

One basic idea that came to my mind was to inject the Feviquick super glue into the crack, incase that arrests the crack from spreading further.

Any thoughts on this?

Re: DIY Repair: Windshield Chip & Crack

Stone flew off the car in front and caused this on my windshield. This is bang in the middle of the windshield and though it doesn't affect the field of vision, seeing it there on my 8 month old Ecosport is a pain every time.

Ford ASS suggests full replacement and quoting 7500/- for the same. Should I go ahead or rather wait and see? The chipping seems to be superficial, and there are no visible cracks per se.

Any input will be appreciated.

If it is superficial, the windshield repair kit will help seal it. You can give it a try. Will save you a lot of moolah.

Can you upload more images at different angle?

Re: DIY Repair: Windshield Chip & Crack

I travel 100kms daily on highways. Stones and small debris keep flying onto the car from the vehicles ahead. The front bonnet and bumper have hairline scratches, which I used to ignore, but, two recent impacts were really becoming a pain point for me.
The sight for any automobile lover is unbearable. I called my friend who has a windshield replacement shop in Gurgaon, he asked for 2-3 days for insurance process, service centre asked 10k plus for the replacement.
I started searching for other options, as I have already replaced it once, and doing it everytime is not a feasible solution.

Came across a YouTube video, where step by step instructions were given.
The link is as follows:

I searched and ordered my repair kit from china,
Just 400-500 rupees was the cost, but it took around a month to reach.

Damage from impacts may or may not be repairable. This depends on their shape and size:[6]
Circular or semicircular "bullseye" cracks must be less than 1 inch (2.5 cm) in diameter.
A "star break," or point of impact with short cracks spreading outward, must have all cracks fit in a circle 3 inches (7.5 cm) wide.
Other shapes should fit within a 2 inch (5 cm) circle, not counting short cracks running outward.

These are the points you should keep in mind while carrying out the repairs.

Now coming to the process,
It's fairly simple, won't complicate it.

Clean the windshield.
Apply the seal (kind of a double sided tape) around the area.
Put the pedestal on top
Put the solution (5-6) drops in the pedestal opening
Take the syringe and put it on the pedestal
Pull out to create a vacuum and lock for 10 mins
Remove syringe, and put it back again, this time pumping air, and leave it for 20 mins
Remove everything by safety razor
Apply the solution again and put the curing film over it
Leave in the sun for 15 mins
You are done

Sharing some pictures, they are few because I was doing it myself, and needed to keep safe from the solution (it should not touch your skin or painted surface)
