I had visited the Ford Service at least 4 times on a same rattling noise. They removed the dash and has now been cleared. They also told me about the complexity of the same.

I had a dashboard episode with my XUV5OO. After fixing it back, I can see a few panel gaps. Plastic quality on the Ecosport is far above what I have on the Mahindra, so just wanted to get that side clarified.

Batterylow, where's this cam fixed on the dash. Planning to get one and wondering where the ideal spot would be. Can you post a pic for us?

Hi Pranxter, I have also placed it in the same place as arunphilip has mentioned. I have still not used it as I do not want to use the only charging socket I have in my car. I need to get another socket done to keep the dash cam charged all the time.

You can mount the cam using:Universal GPS NAV-MAT II
Make: Bracketron Inc.

You can control the Sony cam using your Android phone.

PS: Do not leave the rubber mat exposed to the sun, for extended periods.
The same goes for the cam. Retrieve the setup after your trip. One of the reasons is theft.

Neat (and I mean neat, as in clean and tidy) tutorial, Arun! You should be writing a book on DIY for us! Keep them coming.

Why not connect it to the 12V supply at the cabin-light near the mirror? (Of course, it would not be triggered by the ignition switch).

Great thread. This is something I am going to try out. I have a Tom Tom GPS unit which I will Hardwire. While at it I will also buy a Dashcam and fit it.

Where did you buy this from?

Now coming to my question. Don't know if this is the right place to post. I would like to "Hardsecure" the GPS and Dashcam units. As you know these units usually come with a suction cup but invariably the unit falls off sooner or later. Now I don't want it to be permanently secured as I will have to remove the unit sometimes for updates etc. Looking for an option with some kind of twist lock or screws etc. It has to be neat and not spoil the looks of the interiors. Any suggestions?

My Garmin dashcam came with an adhesive mount, out of the box. The dashcam fits to the mount via a spring-loaded ball joint, so I can remove the camera if required, for updates, or when giving the car for servicing.

If you remove the adhesive part from the windshield (e.g. if you sell the car), you can always secure it back using 3M double-sided tape.

If you want something that is even less permanent, then you can look for slide-on mounts like this mount that fits on the sun visor. This has the same ball joint that my Garmin uses.

You can also consider these 3 mounts from Arkon, which are compatible with TomTom.

1. Dash cam with day night infrared 940 nanometer (used in TV remotes ), mounted behind rear view mirror. Wiring can be hidden inside cabin roof lining, also recording angle not less than 120 degree .
2. GPS can be mounted on the Dash. Easy to install and remove. You will tempt someone to break in and steal, if you parked your car and left for the day. Also the heat inside the cabin will bamage your GPS & rubber pad.

This summer vacations when i went to Badrinathji, my children refused to go but they wanted to see the scenery 'online' through dash cam in my Innova.

Since then I've been trying to find a way of setting up a WiFi real time transmission of data like this :

WiFi Dash cam ---> mini 3G router in car ----> Internet ------> Monitor from anywhere including home in real time.

A kind of ip dash cam!

Since 3G operators (including BSNL/MTNL/AirTel) do not allow public I.P addresses (or DDNS), it very difficult to "push" data from behind 3G router while quite easy to "pull' data.

So only option, perhaps, remains a VPN.

Any thoughts?

The simplest solution I can think of is Skype! Mount your phone as a dashcam, call on Skype using the phone's own 3g connection. Cuts out the need of additional h/w. Your dashcam can continue to focus on recording the journey in case you want to view the footage later. Just my thought :).

I would want it to be removed when parking in an unsafe area. However I want it to be secure when I am driving. This is the problem I'm having with the suction cup.

I believe you can go for the soft GPS NAV-MAT II, There is also a YouTube Demo video. Once you peal it off save it in a zip lock clear plastic bag. To save the glue from attracting dust.

You can also use Meerkat or Periscope on your phone to live stream the video.

IIRC Those apps have an option to save the stream video too.

All this while you can focus just on driving.

If still hesitant, an App called DailyRoads can record the drive video in the background.
