Thanks to this thread and bhpians: Dinu, kiranvakati, rajoy and gannu_1 for inspiring me to take this up by posting their experiences. Did it on my 8 months old swifty! Let the pictures speak for itself. Thanks to my supermom for helping me mark and cut. 1.5hour job.

The work begins: used chalk to mark(my mom marked. All I did was cut) the raw material: durosoft mats, costed Rs90/sq.ft @Mysore. Thick and soft. Satisfied with quality. Might have got it cheaper in Bangalore.

Used 3 pieces as I thought it will be more durable. The more cuts: the more it is prone to tearing.





Used up 18 sq.ft (9ft x 2ft) if the noodle mat. Used it generously and I have left a little extra everywhere. You might observe this in pictures. Satisfied and happy.

To all the bhpians who are planning to do it- don't fret too much. It is an easy job. I would be more than happy to help any of you do it- in Bangalore/Mysore. (Y)

This is a bit confusing to me now.
http://emahendra.com/ which is selling (original 3M) mats has five options:
Cushion/ Low/ Med/Heavy/ Standard.

The rate for 2 ft x 3 ft is between 1300 to 5500.

Assuming that for a typical sedan, I need 30 ft based on Captain Slow's figure above.
So, with that logic, I need about 5 sheets of 2x3. This will cost more than what 3M charges (around Rs. 4500).

So, what am I missing?

You will not need more than 18 to 20 sqft for a typical sedan, if you plan it well. And if you buy a 70 Rs per sq ft one, the whole thing wont be more than 1500 Rs.

In the site 3x4 low duty (12 sq ft) is quoted at 1320 Rs. So even this will be around Rs 2000.

Thanks for the Knowledge gained from the posts here and the interest shown by one of friends who was also keen to join in the DIY project- we got this done in a matter of few hours today. We calculated that we might require some 20 sqft each, for my Punto and my friend's Vista. Decided to get 50 sqft so that we are safe and also can use any thing left for home purpose. By 2pm went to the road opposite Express avenue that goes towards beach and enquired 2-3 shops. ₹65 was at first shop. Next one showed a ₹65 as well as a ₹85. Then realised we would be better of with the ₹85 type. The top looked of same quality, soft and thick enough to our expectations but the bottom side was more plasticky in the ₹65 type and ₹85 type was more rubbery with about half inch spaced dotted texture which seemed to be more stay-in-one-place type. But the shop did not had enough of it in stock. So went to another shop this one very close to the junction bang opposite to EA mall and located in a bye lane to the right. Saw the medium grey/beige type there with dotted bottom. This was in a 4ft wide roll so got 13 ft of it which come to 52 sqft and we got it @₹60. Fair deal. Back to our homes and joined hands after an hour at my friends basement parking lot, finished the job in another 2.5 hours for both cars. Got about 2nos. of 2ft rectangle type mats as left over too, for home use. We used the normal cutter (the handy one which has the step by step extendable blade coming out of it). Cutting was easy - reverse the mat - do first a free hand lining with the blade supported by the OEM mats as template leaving some slack. Then tear the noodle portion along the cut line. Have left 1 to 2 inches slack on the sides curving upwards and more extra length than the OEM mats going into the foot well areas. Also made some cuts at corners so bulging is avoided. Rear we have put it as single piece carefully cut to shape with some slack. But I have a hunch that it will tear soon if we keep removing it for dusting once a while unless we are extra careful. (Please excuse me for no pics as it was pretty dark for getting good quality pics when we were done) All set for the monsOOn!!! Paisa vasool at ~₹1500 per car. Satisfaction of a DIY - the bonus!

Went to the market yesterday in Pune hunting for the noodle pattern carpets.
Found several shops, the standard price being Rs. 70/ sq. ft. I did not measure my car, but considering the data presented on this thread, bought 7 ft x 4 ft = 28 feet for a typical sedan. I am sure it will be enough, since the previous thread talks about 20 ft. being enough for a Punto.

After bargaining I got this for Rs. 60/ sq. ft. I could not find anything lower than this.

I have yet to open up the roll. Hopefully will get some time this weekend.
BTW: What I understand is that the portion just inside the door will not get covered by this carpet. I am thinking of doing something to protect the fabric at that place which gets dirty when someone steps in the car or even while sitting, when the shoes touch the extreme outer side.

So this is exactly what 3M is selling branded as "Nomad" mats? That means they are ripping people off.

It could be that the material on the Nomad mats is more durable than these local mats which is why they are charging a premium. Of course, not to mention the ‘3M’ branding as well.

Where in Pune did you get these from? Could you please share the contact details of the shop? What brand is it? (Duromat?)

The brand is X-TURF (as printed on back side).

I had a chance to see and feel the Nomad mats which were displayed at the 3M Car Care outlet here at Ahmedabad. Well, honestly there is a difference (albeit minimal) in the material used on the Nomad mats and feels a bit softer in comparison to the rest of the ones we get outside. The whole mat itself is a lot more flexible and less stiffer. But otherwise, there were no major differences and I suppose 3M could have priced it a bit better.

I washed the mats laid on my car last weekend after we returned from our trip. The sand and dust came off easily (needless to say, the driver side had the most!) and was washed with a jet of water using a hose. Hanged it on the boundary wall and it dried within an overnight (Surat is still humid!). Looks spanking clean and new!

I too saw the 3M Nomads in the 3M car care centre when I went to install front film on my X1. The base of the 3M is definitely a little bit thicker and softer, but the overall finish did not seem very different from the ones I bought. Definitely not worth the price differential

Drove down to Thippasandra and picked up the noodle mats from Handloom house (not an easy place to locate!). Searched for the same in Whitefield and Malleswaram but none of the stores had these in stock.

Got 2ft x 8ft (black color)for my Wagon R, which came up to 1,200. Think this is slightly on the higher side as I remember someone posting that they paid Rs 65 per sqft. Drove back home and spent an hour cutting and shaping the mat.
Viola! Now my 4 year old ride sports trendy black non slip floor mats

Haven't had a chance to look at the 3M Nomad mats but I feel that these could have been a little thicker (2-5 mm). Current thickness is about 11-12mm from the base to the top of the noodles.

Thanks for the acknowledgement. Yogamat is a wonderful material for DIY. I have lost count of the number of instances I have used a yogamat both in cars and at home. I always have a stock of that at home. See one of the instances I have used them in the boot of my earlier Civic.
