Abhijit - I was not aware of this. I travelled on 14th April.

I think in the future i would not be forgetful and carry the tickets without fail. Arguing with the attendant at an intermediate bus stop and holding up all the passengers would not be a good idea.

Yes that is a good idea, but there will be no arguments at all. It is official that you should be able to show the attendant your ticket on laptop or smart phone. But only SMS won't work.
I have tried this a couple of times. Works well.
All said and done, Msrtc people are light years behind from KSRTC in using and adapting new technologies.
Cheers,
Abhijeet.

A few quick and silly questions from a first timer on the Shivneri service:

(1) Coming from Dadar, what are the closest drop off points from Deccan Gymkhana - Pune?

(2) Does Shivneri have an online-only booking service, or can I buy tickets at the counter at Dadar?

Thanks in advance.

Unless things have changed recently with regards to the route, the closest points for Deccan Gymkhana (on the Dadar- Pune Station service) will be Shimla Office/Shivaji Nagar station or you can get down at the University Circle and take the Senapati Bapat road if you have to go towards Symbiosis/Film Institute.

There may be Shivneris to Swargate which you can get down near the Gymkhana area itself (Some services goes via Kothrud). My information is a little dated since during the time I used to travel to/from Deccan it was during the time of Shivneris non AC predecessor (The Asiads) and that time there was a stop near Shimla office. Recent trips have all been on Neetha since I no longer need to go to Deccan but instead to Wakad and except during peak hours, it is like a hop on/ hop off service on Neeta especially when you are coming from Pune. Plus Neeta has more frequencies to Andheri and beyond compared to Shivneri.

I am sure others will have more current information.

Yes you can book tickets online at https://public.msrtcors.com/ticket_booking/index.php (You can select Shivneri specific timings by selecting Ac-Shivneri under "Bus service type")

You need to register which will be a 2 min process.

OK, I checked in the website. The hourly Dadar Swargate Shivneris have a stop at Deccan Gymkhana itself. Buses hourly on the hour from 6 AM to 9 PM.

Shivneri Volvo bus fares cross Rs 400/- mark. The min fare for a Thane Pune, Dadar Pune is Rs 405 up from the earlier Rs 390. The Borivali-Pune Ticket now costs Rs 480 up from Rs 465.

No doubt that the Shivneri Volvo are the best option to travel to and from Pune but the hike coming at a time esp when the vacations are going to start is not going to go down well with the commuters. As compared an Ac Chair car fare for train comes around Rs 335 and normal ticket costs around Rs 100.

405 !!! the rates have risen sharply. I used to travel during 2012 Chinchwad - Dadar - Chinchwad and the fare was around 300.
However whenever i had time, used to prefer AC chair car Train journey over Shivneri.
The main advantage of Shivneri or rather their USP is in good time management. The ride quality of these Volvo buses is good but not all of them are well maintained. And the biggest grudge i had was some of the drivers used to drive very recklessly at times.

A little off-topic but there is ample opportunity for railways to rope in and capture this very busy route with something like Mumbai local trains. I know there are trains plying from Lonavala to Pune but the frequency is not good. They should think about starting local train service between say Kalyan - Pune

I expect the fare to see another climb once the tolls come up between kharghar and panval. Some of the toll booths have already come up but there is time before they become operational going by the construction status. Roads you can drive without paying a toll is fast becoming rare commodity ;).

One of my father's friend was working in Western Railway on a very senior position. I had asked this question to him. He had replied that Mumbai Local trains are not designed to climb up ghat sections like Karjat Borghat. Hence whenever any local is transported to Lonavla - Pune section, it requires banker engines.

I told them that how local trains climb up sandhurst road harbour line which is also having gradient. He answered that the distance a local has to climb to reach the station is very small. Borghat has very high incline and if the joint between bogies breaks down, it will be a disaster like Indrayni express rolled down the ghats few years back.

IMHO railways will have to design smaller rakes, 2-5 bogies for these type of journeys. Railbus concept can be introduced here.

Oh that was insightful. Never thought of this really.

ST is doing its best i guess as far as frequency is concerned. Somehow the no of people traveling between the route has gone up drastically.

can anyone help me know where exactly is the Goregaon pickup point for Borivali - Swargate shivneri? I have to drop a friend at 5.30 AM tomorrow, we havent booked any ticket assuming we will get it on the spot as its a weekday.

Are there buses from Mumbai to Pune which have a pickup point in Mulund? Shivneri or any private operators like Neeta etc?

Thank you very much. Do you know if the Thane Vandana Bus Stop has only Shivneri buses or also other Volvo operators/share taxi etc? Asking because if I miss the bus or if the bus is full, I will have other options.
