Are all those people trekkers returning to Castle rock from Dudhsagar. I had heard that in Goods train they allow trekkers climb, never thought it will be this full though.

I wonder what sort of powertrain it runs on. Possibly an agricultural diesel. Anyway, how long is the route for this train?

It typically uses a truck engine (most often a 407 or 207 engine or equivalent) for the torque it provides. I have actually seen a Cummins Diesel once being used.

Thats how most trekkers commute back from Dudhsagar. The loco guys really give them a "lift" ! :)

Not sure about the rules part though.

Well I reached Dudhsagar by hitching a ride on the last bogie of the same goods train!

There aren't any rules at Dudhsagar. When coming back, I got onto a passenger train with the crowd comparable to Mumbai local trains at Rush Hour and crammed myself into some seat. I was told no ticket is needed and got down at Castle Rock.

Even the parking at Castle Rock was super hap hazard, park wherever you want. I literally ran out of the railway station, started the car and got out of the area before rest of the people reached their cars. There were atleast 200 vehicles parked next to the train station.

Tech edge to boost safety on trains

Quote:

To ensure safety of passengers in view of ongoing efforts to increase speed of trains, the Railways has decided to install a sophisticated communication system in place of existing walkie talkie system for unhindered contact between the driver and ground staff.

“We are implementing Mobile Train Radio Communication (MTRC) system which will provide better communication between the control room and the driver on speeding trains,” said a senior railway ministry official involved with the project.

The system will provide control rooms with emergency brake for trains which can be used in case of signal violation by drivers.

I was studying in Manipal when Konkan Railway opened up. It did reduce the number of buses plying between Mangalore and Mumbai. I still remember spending 6 hrs in Madgaon while returning back from Mumbai as we could not get a ticket on Direct train and hence came by an express train to Madgaon and took a passenger train to Udupi.

Thanks very much for sharing. The monsoon railway documentary by Nat Geo was some thing which I was wanted to buy but missed out due to some reason or the other.

Amazing subtle humor in there as well.

The narrator says : Indian Railway is the only one where one can keep the doors open while the train is in motion. And to add to it he says point to the advt on the door: "And an apt advt. at an apt place: Life Insurance Corporation!" :)

Here is another classic
