Now thats something interesting. I have one grouse though - They could've given a fully built bus for trials instead - this would let KeSRTC experience some good 'made for city' buses. There has been some talk of KeSRTC starting city services in Kochi very soon - hope some of these make it here

As the name suggests, these are Semi-Low Floor buses. They are made for city operations (TNSTC has a few of them running long inter-city routes). These buses come with a BS-III 167HP Hino Engine, with factory fitted rear air suspension. The floor height in these model is 850mm (E+2), IIRC.

Recently 31 nos of SLF were converted by TNSTC-Coimbatore for running in intercity application. The seats are changed with high head rest.
Here is one, running between Salem and Coimbatore.

Volvo to test hybrid buses in India

Global CV major Volvo will commence serial production of hybrid buses – the Volvo 7700 Hybrid and the double-decker Volvo B5L Hybrid.

The company says the hybrid bus will reduce fuel consumption by up to 35 percent and carbon emissions by an equal amount. It will start regular production at its Polish and Swedish plants.

The coaches for the double-deckers will be built in Northern Ireland.

Its Indian subsidiary now plans to bring in the hybrid bus to conduct tests in Indian conditions.

“It is only now that there is a commercially viable hybrid bus in the European market,” says Håkan Karlsson, president, Volvo Buses.

Ashley2, is'nt that as newsworthy as JLR making a custom car for Ratan Tata?

I mean, Irizar is a JV between AL and TVS.

Yes, the company Irizar TVS is a tri way venture between AL, Irizar and TVS. They have two plants near Trichy.
The news is worth as it.

The iT09 is a 12-metre inter-city coach on Ashok Leyland chassis with both AC and non-AC options. The bus comes fitted with the 180 hp, H series AL engines with seating capacity of 40 for the AC version and 36 for non-AC. It has luggage space of nearly 8 cubic metres. The rigid structure complies to the new regulation of roll-over norm for safety expected to be mandated in India in the near future. The bus is priced at Rs. 22 lakhs plus taxes for bus body building, excluding the cost of the chassis.

Some photos.

How come the AC version has more seats than the non ac version? Is it short of a rear door or something else??

The bus in AshLey2's photo has the old-style steering wheel, while the one in prmd_cochin's photos look like the ones found in the AL 12m bus.

So I doubt if the former is a 180bhp 12m bus. I think it might be 12m long, but having the 114bhp engine.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

The front grill could've been made to look better - it looks too big (prominent? couldn't get an apt word) for the front.

I think the lack of front number, small front windscreen undid the design. A well done bumber and larger front windscreen would have been better.

.
I feel the bus in Ashley2's photo is an iT09 built on a AL Viking Chassis. The front overhang is less unlike 12M chassis.

LUXURA Returns!

AL is soon to launch a facelifted version of its intercity luxury coach "Luxura" with a 260HP engine...probably in Dec2010.
May be this time AL has decided to seriously step into the market. And hope the "face lift" is considerably & significantly strong atleast to takeon "Isuzu"!
