Govt plans to launch safety rating system for trucks & CVs

The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways is planning to roll out a new safety assessment rating system for trucks and commercial vehicles, on the lines of Bharat NCAP. The announcement was made during a 2-day workshop on Vehicle and Fleet safety organized by GNCAP and the Institute of Road Traffic Education (IRTE).

“The idea is to encourage manufacturers to improve the production quality making vehicles more safe,” Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said.

In order to reduce road accidents, the government plans to regulate the working hours of truckers, which currently extend to 13-14 hours a day. Air-conditioned cabins have already been mandated, which aims to improve the working environment of truckers. Advanced safety systems like ADAS are also being implemented to reduce accidents and fatalities.

The government is also looking to set up 32 state-of-the-art driving institutes across India to train drivers and address the issue of a shortage of skilled drivers faced by transport companies.

Re: Govt plans to launch safety rating system for trucks & CVs

Will Government also launch a safety rating for roads / highways and it's related infrastructure ?

Ex - Highway A can we classified as a 1 star rated Zone due to blind spots and hare brained design aspects, Highway B can be classified as a 4 star Zone, etc.,

Just to encourage Government and contractors to improve the production quality making roads more safe and putting a value for human life.

Re: Govt plans to launch safety rating system for trucks & CVs

The urgency to tame the vehicle manufacturers and component suppliers is commendable but what is disconcerting is the carnal neglect of our highway infrastructure and associated furniture; fixing a broken road or a failed lighting tower or a high mast or a traffic signal or signboard leading to accidents, is all so painful to see and witness.
