Re: Airconditioned Double Decker Express Trains | Love 'Em or Loathe 'Em?

I frequently travel between Ahmedabad and Surat. Before introduction of morning Vande Bharat, only Tejas and Double decker were the convenient options timing wise. Double decker is one of the most uncomfortable trains I have travelled in. Would any day prefer a Mumbai local first class seat to a double decker seat.

Thanks for sharing, around 2 decades back this was the go to double decker train I used to catch from Borivali to Bilimoria every Monday morning for a year or so, kind of ritual, it used to be packed with office goers & people like "India has got latent" filling every nook & corner, eventually my olfactory & auditory sensory neurons would go numb in few minutes and for few hours of travel, I would attain near nirvana.

The biggest advantage of this train is ticket availability, since it starts at odd time from Mumbai ( 2pmish ) most people dont prefer it. The seats are horrendous to say the least. They have lost cushion and are uncomfortable.

The seat is cramped, its similar to economy class seat in flights ( No elbow room ).

The last time i took it was 2 years ago and we reached Baroda in time. I was able to work for half the journey thanks to integrated trays.

Apart from this train, the other AC Double decker train i rode was NJTransit. I had a chance to ride it 2-3 times when i was in US from NewJersey to Hamilton. That train was empty, seats were decently cushioned and leg room was better.

Re: Airconditioned Double Decker Express Trains | Love 'Em or Loathe 'Em?

I've taken the double decker to Coimbatore from Bangalore once, when the service had just launched. It was quite fun. My only gripe was the lack of legroom. Of course, these trains suffer from gross neglect and the condition of the cars may have worsened over time, but I wouldn't really mind taking one again. Double decker trains cost a lot less than Vande Bharats and Shatabdis. It's criminal how a Shatabdi costs the same as a Vande Bharat or more, but is worse in every measurable way. In the Bangalore region, most major destinations, such as Chennai, Coimbatore, Hyderabad, etc. are half a day's journey by train, so this train perhaps makes most sense here.

I’ve taken the double decker from Delhi/Gurgaon to Jaipur and back a couple of times and my experience has been good till now, especially the last time I had travelled as the coach was fairly new and very well kept!
