Re: Bengaluru: Where should the 2nd airport be located?

It would have been sensible in the first place had they located the airport between Mysore and Bangalore.

Now if given a choice it is probably more sensible to have the new Airport around the Hosur belt where there is easy access to that STRR and the main Highway to Madras and Salem etc.

Saying that, if they add another Terminal and Runway at KIADB itself it can become a Megaplex.

One more thought is if they can get their act together and create proper development around Hosur and Mysore and Hosakote and Tumkur and Anantapur, then the whole area around can become a Megapod.

Looks like Kanakpura Road or Nelamangala:

Re: Bengaluru: Where should the 2nd airport be located?

As someone who flies to Bangalore at least 3 times a month, I would strongly recommend one in South Bangalore - close to Electronic City. There have been occasions when one has missed a 12 noon meeting at Electronic City after taking a 630 am flight from Bombay. That is beyond insane - when so many of Bangalore’s most important companies are based there. I presume the Hosur airport would be too far from e-City as well - so that won’t be a substitute.

Mysore Road - there are no companies there - have never been there except while heading to Mysore or Ooty.

Tumkur - another airport North of Bangalore makes no sense whatsoever. Yes, Bangalore need a proper ring road which gets to NH48 from NH44 which can serve the Tumkur area.

Whitefield - maybe - given it is another hub for industry.

Actually, Hosur airport can work as the best option for electronic city if they can build a dedicated road from the airport to the state border bypassing the Attibele toll. On a day with minimal traffic 40 minutes drive from Hosur to Electronic city is possible.

This will happen. All the proposed locations for the Hosur Airport seem to be close to the STRR and/or the new NH844 between Bangalore and Dharmapuri. The NH844 bypasses Hosur, Attibelle and directly ends on NH44 near Chandapura. This should get done next year itself and once done, Hosur to EC will not take beyond 30min.

Am pretty sure the TN Government will ensure proper connectivity to either of these 2 roads which will make the Hosur Airport easily accessible for all of East/South Bangalore. From that perspective the KA Government would be better off locating the new Airport at Kanakapura/Harohalli Area. No point going to North Bangalore side again.

Isn't this a problem of geography. And politics, that makes the most sensible solution a non-starter. Bangalore and Karnataka end not too far south from electronic city, so there's no space for one. The ideal situation would be if the airport can be built on the border itself and merge the two projects of the Hosur and Bangalore South airports, but that don't suit politicians who want to claim the win (and of course billion dollar contracts) for their constituencies. And going by how the two states have managed the Cauvery water row that has gone on for decades, its probably a good thing this option is not even an option.

Well, you could argue that the Europeans can build the famous 'Large Hadron Collider' across countries, across the border of France and Switzerland, which is another billion billion dollar enterprise, and so, why don't we?

Because, we are like this one-ly .

Another airport is so wasteful and unnecessary. Current airport will suffice for 10 more years at least. Beyond that, use HAL and Hosur airport for short-haul domestic. Works out best for everyone, including people using it.

Re: Bengaluru: Where should the 2nd airport be located?

I think it will mostly come up near Bidadi. It will be well connected with NICE, Peripheral ring road, STRR etc. Its also closer to Mysuru and many townships coming up in south including Industrial ones. Railway lines are also present.

But why cant they extend the current one? There are many airports across the world that handle much more traffic and have been in place for long time.

Put more effort on freeways connecting to current airport. This will have to be done to connect North to new airport too.

Our decision makers are always thinking about new developments without planning or finishing current ones. Always in tender, loans etc mode.
