Indian Army to conduct hydrogen fuel cell bus trials with IOCL

The Indian Army has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) to trial hydrogen fuel cell bus technology.

A hydrogen fuel cell bus was recently handed over to the Indian Army in the presence of General Manoj Pande, Chief of the Army Staff and Shrikant Madhav Vaidya, Chairman of Indian Oil. The bus can seat up to 37 passengers. It can cover 250-300 km on a full tank of hydrogen (30 kg).

Hydrogen fuel cell technology is seen as a sustainable transport solution for the future. It uses hydrogen gas as fuel, which is converted into electricity through an electrochemical process. The only by-product of this process is water vapour.

Last year, the Indian Army signed an MoU with the National Thermal Power Corporation Renewable Energy Limited for the installation of Green Hydrogen-based Microgrid Power Plants along the northern borders. As part of this, a 200 kW Green Hydrogen-based Microgram was installed at Chushul.

Re: Indian Army to conduct hydrogen fuel cell bus trials with IOCL

Would be curious to know what sort of bus it is (Tata?) and where it would be used. Would it ply among the other vehicles of the army and given to a sub unit or it serves a poster boy within the confines of say a corps. Interesting development, although such buses have been running for more than 15 years now in NCR under different civilian tests.
