Switch Mobility unveils IeV electric LCVs with 120 km range

Switch Mobility, a subsidiary of Ashok Leyland, has unveiled the IeV electric light commercial vehicle (LCV) range in India.

The all-electric LCV comes in two variants IeV3 and IeV4, offering a payload capacity of 1.2 tonnes and 1.7 tonnes, respectively. It is based on a 330V high-voltage architecture.

The IeV3 uses a 25.6 kWh battery pack that powers an electric motor having a peak output of 54 BHP and 190 Nm. It has a maximum range of 120 km on a single charge. The battery can be charged in 6 hours using a 3.3 kW AC charger, while a 30 kW DC charger takes just 60 minutes.

The IeV4 uses a 32.2 kWh battery that powers an electric motor that generates 80 BHP and 230 Nm. The maximum range is 120 km, and the battery can be charged in 8 hours using a 3.3 kW AC charger or a 30 kW DC charger in 75 minutes.

In terms of design, the IeV range looks similar to the Ashok Leyland Dost and Bada Dost models. The LCV uses the same cab with a few modifications. Inside, the trucks offer driver+2 seating, a dual-tone dashboard with a touchscreen infotainment system, USB ports, electric power steering, hill hold assist, sliding and reclining driver seat and Swich iON connected tech.

This is a big move by Switch mobility by Ashok Leyland. They upped the game against Tata ace EV. ACE EV comes with 93 V architecture with 21.3 kwh battery and fast charging time of 105 mins. IeV3 and IeV4 will come with the more widely used 330v architecture coupled with 25 and 32 kw batteries respectively. This be will be better option than ACE EV. Also due to the 330v architecture, IeVs are capable to fast charge the batteries in 60 mins.

Re: Switch Mobility unveils IeV electric LCVs with 120 km range

Quite disappointed with the range. I expected a real world range of at least 200 Kms.

In the run up to launch, rumours suggested an ARAI range of 300, leading me to assume that it would do at least 200 in the real world.

A 120 Kms range makes it quite inconvenient for most purposes except short intra-city runs. While it may work with e-Commerce companies who have preset routes/distance per day, this won't work with Porter as it's severely disadvantaged for inter-city hauls.

Diesel/CNG makes more sense as the electric Dost is likely to be quite pricey. Just won't justify the lack of flexibility!

Cheers,

Jay

This is probably the only advantage. We need more range for commercial applications. Hope someone starts launching long range light commercial vehicles! Even OSM's electric LCVs haven't hit the market for some strange reason despite being announced 2 years ago.

Cheers,

Jay

Why do we need more range for LCVs? 90% of time LCVs are used for short intra city dispatches. They are used to either go around no entry restrictions or to reach the last mile deliveries where bigger trucks can't enter. I work with a lot of LCV and for me 100km real world range is more than sufficient. Yes, there will always be exceptions but current EVs won't cover them.

Also, OSM is just importing Chinese/Thailand trucks, not ground up product build. I won't trust them in the long run to provide any meaningful mobility solutions for India.
