Yes,the fare is quite on the higher side for a conservative city like Calcutta.
The frequency is also quite low,and you have to be very lucky to get one.
Calcuttans have not accepted the city Volvos entirely..as yet!

On the other hand the new SLF buses have been ushered really well by the public.They are like a breath of fresh air amongst the ramshackle tin and wood bodied old buses!

As to making out the vehicle make from outside - there was an exchange between me and hvkumar several pages back on this thread itself.

So save you some searching, the easy way is to took at the front and rear hubs.

Mahindra Navistar plans to get into bus manufacturing in a year and a half.

Rakesh Kalra, managing director, MNAL, said, "We are planning a bus range, which will include low-floor buses in both diesel and CNG options. We are in talks with the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers to standardise the specification of buses under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) scheme as different states have a list of different specifications, making the manufacturing process very complicated."

With MNAL joining the race, the bidding for buses under JNNURM will become more competitive as the company is confident of garnering a high share, Kalra said.

I thought as per the original plan, all the JNNURM buses were supposed to be delivered by year end, [ i believe it is extended to next year now]. But how can they garner major share, while the first bus will be rolling out only after one and a half year?

As a matter of fact, the parent company, Navistar International is not a big player in bus market in its home turf itself and their first motor coach of (40+) seating will be introduced only in 2010.

C'mon! As long as you don't put up credit, it is assumed that the images were taken by you - this is the primary reason why it is important that you mention your source.

Guys can we please lay to rest to this photo-credit-copy right issue?

Chill! It's the internet and any information placed on it without any privacy clause is indeed equal to keeping your car parked in the market with doors open and keys in it. No use in crying later that you didn't authorize anyone to take it..common! If you are so much concerned about sharing photos why not use the option in picassa for eg. where it doesn't allow to right click and copy the images?

BTW with all due respect I appreciate your time and effort in taking all those pictures.

Taking an unlocked car, with all doors open is still theft. And there is some use is taking up such cases with the police.

In other words, on the internet, simply providing access to some information to the public, does not authorise somebody else to claim it as his or her own.

These buses, funded under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), were flagged off by Bangalore South MLA M. Krishnappa at Vishwapriyanagar on Wednesday. Six buses have been deployed on the route (362B and 362C).
The corporation has also decided to deploy these buses on six other routes as and when the buses are inducted into the fleet. The routes are HMT (Jalahalli) – J.P. Nagar; Kengeri – Yelahanka; Isro Layout – Vidyaranyapura; Gollarahatti – Banaswadi; Padmanabhanagar – Jalahalli and Channamanakere Achchukattu – Kadugodi.
The fares on these buses are a little more than the ordinary services, but are lower than the Vajra (Volvo) fares, said P.K. Garg, Managing Director (in-charge).
The corporation will buy 98 such buses under funds from the JNNURM.
The cost incurred for these buses is less than half of Volvo buses (around Rs. 30 lakh), Mr. Garg said.

There is still a way - the starting grunt of both these vehicles are distinct. Just start noticing the sounds that both engines make when the bus starts from stop. The Leyland sound is clearly distinguishable from the harsh roar of a TATA Engine.

Another way is to check the difference between the "Stammer" that both engines make when the driver tries to pick up at low speeds on high gears. The TATA engine would make a peculiar knocking sound at this stage.

Thats due to a very simple reason - these buses are front engined, while the ones delivered to DTC are rear-engined!

The buses delivered to BMTC are SLFs.

Sad! I was a regular traveler on the Bommanahalli-Shivaji Nagar route for more than a year, and I was always left to beat the rush on ordinary buses - till the date Big10s came! I saw a bus on 362B yesterday around Brigade Road - was pretty crowded as well.
